Hulda Smith -1942

HULDA SMITH DIARY – 1942

Typed by her niece, Karen Bazzani Zach – her sister, Kate (Shan) married Fred Bazzani and they had this adorable little blonde babe, me – Karen (and my equally adorable twin bros, Larry & Garry) - Note Hulda was a senior when the diary closes in December. Shucks - wish we had one for 1943 :)

Hulda May Smith was born in Parke County, Indiana at the home of her grandparents (large home on left about 1 mile off of State Road 47 – home gone now but its sister home is now the Turkey Hill Farm Antiques & Uniques - 2018) Joe & Amanda Barker Morgan (on road going to Byron) on the 20th of August in 1925.  She passed away at her home of some 50 years in Waveland, Indiana (Howard Street) after battling cancer (bowel a disease her father had) for two years on April 18, 1987.  For around four decades she worked as a proof reader at RR Donnelley and retired from there.  She enjoyed doing word puzzles, walking, watching television and her Pekingese dogs.  In her younger years, she was beautiful, dressed sharply and almost always owned a fancy Chrysler car.  Generous to a fault, she never married but was always taking me (Karen Bazzani Zach) and my twin brothers (Larry and Garry Bazzani) to Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati or wherever to a ball game (and a multitude of Dairy Queen trips to Crawfordsville). She loved the Cubs and LA Dodgers as we all did.  Besides Hulda and my mother, there was another sister, Lois Joyce (born 18 Nov 1929 died 23 Jan 1931) who was puny from the get-go. Mom said she and Aunt Sis (Hulda) never were allowed to play or make any noise when they were young because Lois Joyce was always sick.  Finally, she died of pneumonia, a sad day for my grandparents, Carl and Hazel Morgan Smith.  Hulda loved animals (as seen with the cats in her diary – she would come to have several Pekignese dogs in her latter years) and life, in general.  During this diary, she would have been a Junior at Waveland HS and worked for the Everman family in the Waveland telephone office (2nd house west of the current post office – her sister, my mom, Kate also worked there).  They had learned the phones early as my grandmother had the phone system for Byron in their tiny home and the girls (mostly my mom, but aunt a little, she at age 5 and mom at 9) had to pitch in when Lois Joyce was so sick. Their father, Leland “Carl” Smith worked as a guard at the Putnamville prison – an extremely intelligent man he read constantly but grew-up in a very poor family and never finished high school (not really that unusual in the day, however).  He received large amounts of shrapnel in both legs during WWI and could only work in certain capacities (not lots of walking for instance – he was guard who oversaw the prisoners in the Wood shop – we have a few items made there).

– Junior Russell – Junior – JR; Jr. R; etc - is Kate’s (Mom’s) boyfriend. She was so crazy about him.  He went to the service and married someone else.  Evidently my mother was totally devastated. She had dated dad some in 1939-40 but it didn’t work out. They met at the CCC camp – he’d call home and went through mom. He told her he was going to marry that voice some day.  Dad was jilted by a French girl he met in the service.  Returning home, he visited her parents, whom he adored and they loved him. (They never liked Jr. Russell).  So, Dad asked her out again.  They’d not gone out many times and he told her he had seen horrible things and wanted to settle down to be happy that she had no one, he had no one and let’s do it!  They did – twin brothers came exactly 8 months from their wedding night and me almost exactly three years later. Once, when I was 10 or so, I caught mom looking at some old photos of Jr. Russell.  I’ve always been a “tell it as it is,” kind of person and I said, “Mom, this guy is UGLY.  Dad is handsome!”  She got really mad at me but I didn’t care!

Thus, here are a few helpers so the reader will know who the people are or hints of other items no one in the family would know.  There are several interesting over-all items in it. If I have a comment will add here for you to compare 😊

People:

Bill, Mary & Betty – Shulars, Bill having been an Army buddy and they were later neighbors (about half block away, Bill & Mary living on the highway and my grandparents on the middle street in Waveland
Clemie (June 20th & others) – Clemmie Mitchell – no maiden name but she was married to Fred Myers first and had a son, Warren who died at birth.
Dick – (June 10 & others) probably Dick Hockett but not sure (pretty sure it is – son of Vera & Roy mentioned throughout – he is also referred to as Leon
Enola Clouser – friend of the diary writer
Jargo – Arthur W. Jarvis, son of William and Musa (Moore) Jarvis – Sgt in Headquarters Company 36th Field Artillery during WWI. Born: 1 May 1895 Died: 30 Oct 1967
Jim, is her first cousin, Jim Morgan – he and a couple of his brothers were in the Navy (other Morgans, Hulda’s first cousins mentioned: Nina, Ruth, Jerry, Keith, JP, )
Kate (Shan) – sister, Kathryn Smith my mom
Kathryn – Arvin – a good friend of Hulda’s for life
Minnie Kritz – Minnie Cuppy (her parents owned the restaurant for several years) married to Herb Kritz
Nig (Uncle Nig) – Hulda’s uncle, Stanley Morgan – Hulda’s mother’s brother
Olie  –sometimes it looks like Alie or Alice or Ollie – this is Viola Isaacs daughter of John and Clara Henley (born 14 July 1899 Parke County died 31 Dec 1974) – in the diary her wedding is noted “The long anticipated day of Viola’s wedding finally arrived.”  She married Romulous Boyd son of Garret & Elizabeth Boyd.  I don’t believe they ever had children.
Stella (Aunt Stella) – wife of Nig above – Stella Scott Morgan
Thelma – not sure who this is – only Thelma I remember my aunt and mom talking about from the old (or new for that matter) days was Thelma Brooks but by 1942, she would have been married and gone, so not sure. Oh, later on, I’m getting the hint that Thelma is Mrs. William Hunt – since in June my aunt says she gets chocolate milk at Hunt’s then goes to sit with Thelma on her porch.
Vera -- Kay, Doris & Francis, Dazey – first thought this was Vera
Twinkle (this was a very nicknaming family) – this is Hulda’s uncle.  Her dad’s brother, Claude.

Places:

C’ville – Crawfordsville the county seat for Montgomery County where they likely always went to the several movies mentioned!
Waveland -  town in Central Indiana where the diary was written

Things:

Jam (Jane; Jeanny; Janey …) – pretty sure is a cat.
“Pricy” pretty sure is the “cat.”  They had lots of cats with odd-ball names, only the ones I can remember she and my gpa’ having after my gma’ passed away were all Toms.  And, all orange.  Odd mom bought mouse traps when they had cats. That’s creepy.
Wannie – another cat? Nope, this is definitely a person but WHO??

These are Hulda's parents' in their younger years - Sarah "Hazel" Morgan and Leland "Carl" Smith

Kate "Shan" and the other picture is the four of them together - Hulda the taller one - mom was short :)

January

Thurs Jan 1 – It is the morning after the night before.  Enola, Kate and I ushered in “42” in great style.  We got past the midnight show started it and ended up in bed about 3:30 p.m. and got up at 11 o’clock to find it pouring down rain.  We thought we were left for sure, but after so long of a time we finally came home.

Fri Jan 2 – What a thrilling day.  Took my first training in city slicking, first train ride rode on an escalator (‘’’).  Seen the end of ‘Babes on Broadway” and “Mr. and Mrs. North” at Lowes. We (Kate, Enola & I) bought enormous red and I don’t mean big purses.  Big purses? Sounds familiar.  All in all we concluded that Indianapolis is some city. Got home around  6:30 p.m.  Talked to brakemen, old people from R’ville and a few others.  Marilla (?) also fell.

Sat Jan 3  -- I’m so tired that I can hardly navigate at all.  Mom and I cleaned up the house from top to bottom, mopped the floor, and dabbled at everything. The paper said that they ay let school out early on account of the war. I hope I hope I hope. They also may start conscripting women for the army, telephone operators and signalars.  I’d like to join but am too little.

Sun  Jan 4 – I very nearly forgo to do my daily job of writing to-night. Jr. R is hear and is going on about wanting me to go with some boy Sat. night.  I worked from 1-5:30, that is after I finally got up.  This is the last day of my X-mas vacation.  After all is said and done it was a pretty swell vacation.  Owen Duley tried to run out without paying for a call but didn’t get far.

Mon Jan 5 – First day back and what a day. Found out my exam grades and felt greatly relieved. I made 2 As & 2 Bs I think.  I got first in history and that’s news anytime. When we got to school we found the assembly looked strangely different. After so long of a time I finally discovered that the library had been moved to the back of the room.  Dad came home for his vacation.

Tues Jan 6 – I knew that it was too good to last.  I mean our sitting arrangement in Lit.  McClain reseated us today
alphabetically.  No one liked it. Kate and Dad went to C’ville and Kate bought four mouse traps.  Caught two the first hour. We also initiated a new fire building program this morning. Instead of taking it every other morning it’s a fire a day every day from now on. Kate went down to Junior Russels & Dad is in bed so now to bed 9:15.

Wed Jan 7 – The assembly looked like a gypsy camping ground today. The boys wore yellowed corduroy/autographed in lipstick, completed by red flannel shirts and wide green suspenders. The breeches legs were rolled half way to the knee to reveal old work shoes.  Enola came down tonight and we “danced” if you call it that. Jr. R. is also here, Helen finally came from Muncie. Jeanie sleeps in the cellar from now on.

Thu Jan 8 – On a whole, this was a very uninteresting day. The only bright spot occurred when Dad pardoned Pricy for his little “prank” and suspended his “cellar” sentence.  He now takes his rightful place in bed unchallenged. Oh yes, everyone was at home tonight and no one was here. That’s what I cal “news.”

Fri Jan 9 – The first Friday of the first week of the second semester of school started but with a boom.  Mom had the fires built when I got up this morning. Uncle Claude (Carl Smith’s brother) was here for dinner.  Beard was out of class in Bookeeping and the roof was very nearly raised.  I read an old issue of “Hilltopio” tonight and Kate is at Jr. Russells. I can go to bed with the knowledge of no school tomorrow.

Sat Jan 10 – I took advantage of the day and slept until 9:30. Had to get my own breakfast even to the coffee. Bill pushed the Ford to get it started and Dad grudgingly took us to C’ville. Went to the Coney and came home about 3:15.  Dad had a tooth pulled.  After Kate got off work we went after the groceries. The temp outside 10 above and getting colder every second. Now to bed and to sleep late tomorrow. I hope Jam stays out of bed.

Sun Jan 11 – Breakfast at 10:30 or 11 and then Kate and I cleaned up the kitchen. We went over to Uncle Sig’s (Carl’s brother, Clarence Smith – Edith & Helen his daughters). Edith & Helen’s were there. Ruby gave us some “Love” magazines. Read one today and I think there are enough left to last a month.  Jr. Russell is here again to-night. Jane is laying in the middle of the floor with big burs in his tail. I hope he doesn’t sleep with us tonight.

Mon 1Jan 2 – Everything at school went pretty good for a change. Have a Literature test tomorrow. When I came home this evening Shan had given Janie a bath.  He is so pretty, clean and soft that mom wouldn’t care if he slept with her.  Mary was over this blowing as usual. Dad and I read awhile tonight and I worked on my bookkeeping. Besides that, we just sat and looked at Jane.

Tues Jan 13 – Rather an exciting day for a change.  Had a literature test and nearly didn’t get any right I think. Helped Dad fix the pump this evening, then dressed up in long hose and hat and took the ford, Kate, Jr. Russell & Enola to C’ville. Enola and I seen “A Yank in the RAF.”  It was really good.  Sonja Henie in Sunrise Serenade is going to be there beginning Sun.  I sure would like to see it. Janey is bleeding so I had better see what is wrong with him.

Wed Jan 14 – Just another unexciting day for the most part. Struggled thru most of our classes without accident or any mishaps. Kate kept Simon’s baby this afternoon and waylaid me to carry my purse home for her.  Tonight we are having a “nail polish party.” Mine, Kate’s Jr. Russel’s fingernails and also on Jr. Russel’s breeches. Pricy (Bricy) is as well as can be expected, not saying much either.  Mrs. Spencer & Olie were here this evening until 6.

Thurs Jan 15 – At last the long anticipated Country (sic – county) Tourney weekend has arrived. I didn’t go but rumor has it that we beat Wingate 28 to 30.  Thelma came over tonight and was talking about Annette and her “epcasade (sic).”  The boys didn’t come to literature class today but I think they will from now on. Hallett sent us girls to the assembly while he talked to them.

Fri  Jan 16 – After nothing more exciting than a pep session and bookkeeping test at school, I came home at three and Kate and I got supper and fed Jane salmon. I wrote two letters tonight, one to Bernice Akers and one to Uncle Bert. We have Janie tucked in bed on the davenport with his toilet, milk and salmon beside it.  The ballgame score at the end of the first quarter was Alamo 4 Waveland 1.  Looks bad.

Sat Jan 17 – If only I wasn’t a lady I sure could have cussed today.  I went sprawling right flat on my face in C’ville.  Didn’t get hurt any but I sure got muddy. Enola rode home with us and Jr. Russell came up and I read until he went home – nearly midnight. Also washed my hair and permed it up. Alamo won last night 18-4. I think. Just two points ( 18-4?) – not bad at all.

Sun Jan 18 – Ate so much chicken I thought I would die.  Worked from 12:30 to 5:30 without anything eventful happening. Jr. R, Kate, Enola & I went to see “Sun Valley Serenade.”  It was really swell. Went to Coney before the show and had to pull Billy Wilson & Ora Lee Brown all of the way home.  Set in front of Hap & Jim at the show. I guess that’s all for ow as it is high time for bed.

Mon Jan 19 – Wound up the day by baking two pies – chocolate and butterscotch – could have been better.  Helen came down and told us about applying for a job at Doneleys.  As usual Junior Russell is still here. Dad’s vacation ended today and he took the ford and went back. I would like to trade places with him.

Tues Jan 20 – After the usual day at school, I walked down by Milligans and with Wannie and met Kate and Mary Elizabeth, we read each other’s mail and I walked home with them. Jr. Russell came down a little after four and I took a ride on his bike.  Walked back to town with Mary E. and got the groceries. I have been reading all evening.  Kate & Jr. are down to his house.  I think and Mom is in bed. Kate got a letter from Rete Fishback.

Wed Jan 21 – Tonight we were what you might call “hogs.”  We ate bananas and cookies until we nearly upped.  Jr. R performed an operation on Katie’s finger. She is resting as well as can be expected now. Told about the Miller with a wart on the tip end of his nose with red hair in it. Thought Enola was coming tonight but I guess she isn’t. I might as well take Jane and go to bed.  It is 8 p.m. Daylight Saving Time starts Feb 9, 1942

Thur Jan 22 – I may fall asleep on my job tonight. I feel like a walking nightmare. Enola came down and we worked on a jigsaw puzzle till 11:30 then after she left I worked it until 12. Went up to Alice’s (Olie’s) a little while. Will cut this short and just drop into bed I think I am too too tired to do anything else.

Fri Jan 23 – Had a grand time in bookkeeping today. Talked on our fingers and had a …test?  She also sprang a surprise test in typing. Had a party tonight to conclude our evening of gaiety. Dance and took a midnight walk. Finished the jig saw puzzle and wore spikes. Enola is staying all night and JR is here again. Doris June was up town riding a put put (put-put) with her tan pob (polo we think remotely could be peplum – peb for short as the word sounds like peblum but more likely polo) coat ? floating behind her like sailes (sales).

Sat Jan 24 – I feel old age slowly creeping up. Kate and I walked away down the railroad tract and I am stiffer than ten boards. After we got home I went to sleep at 5 and didn’t wake up until seven. Went to town for the groceries then Enola went home this morning and Jr. R was here this afternoon. Him and Kate are gone now but God only knows where.

Sun Jan 25 – Built the fires this morning and went to work at 8 and stayed until 9:30. Came home and ate noodles then went to sleep (12-1:30). Worked from 2-3 p.m. and 7:30 – 9:00.  Nothing exciting or interesting at all happened. Jr. R just about spent the day here. Only went home about 15 minutes for supper.

Mon Jan 27 – Surprise? I made an A in our bookkeeping test today. Went to see “Weekend in Havanna.” It was sure good. Set by Hap. As we were walking down the street in C’ville someone came up behind us and lo and behold it was Georgie Brooks. He had been to Indpls. To take his army exam. He didn’t pass it and wanted us to stop and tell Nicit (?)to come after him.  Finally he just rode home with us & saved all the bother. Dad came home.

Tues Jan 27 – Am I awkward? I really took another spill today and I don’t maybe.  It happened up the street a little ways this time. I made an A on my literature test.  Had these tests and that’s God’s too many. Played card (s) with Dad awhile tonight. Then talked to any I really hurt my knee when I fell down am terribly sleepy so I am going to bed before 7:30. Kate went down to Jr R to see the goats.  G. R. ?????

Wed Jan 28 – Got through the day without falling down physically I mean.  My grade in History hit rock bottom and no wonder.  Have to write a theme on “What the Bill of Rights Means to me.”  Went up to Olie’s (Alice’s ?) awhile tonight. Jr. R. beat me home from school and came back at seven thirty and is still here. He has a bad cold and is taking medicine regularly. Dad went back at noon.

Thurs Jan 29 – Had a very disdainful evening at home only when and went after chewing gum and stopped at Alie’s (I need to find out who this is – kz).  Mom is madder than 25 wet hens although she is very mysterious about the cause of it. Jr. R is here and we are afraid Mom will run us off. If she does we, Helen, Kate & I are going to rent a room.  Kate gave Janie a bath this morning. Went up to the telephone office about an hour this evening.

Fri Jan 30 – Today gave me a good running start to the asylum.  In a few more days I will probably have reached that destination.  Mom wrote Enola a letter and jumped her and at noon got after me. We never done anything. I would like to leave home and never let her know where I am.    Maybe I will someday.  Washed dishes from 3:45 until 7.  Haven’t spoke to mom all day. She told Enola she would whip Kate if she wasn’t so poorly.
Sat Jan 31-Stayed in bed until about 10 to avoid unpleasant society.  Cleaned up the house and Mom is trying to get friendly.  Mom talked to Dad tonight then I went after the groceries. It sure is icy out.  Kathryn Miles Eclbarger came up awhile and Freddie Catterson called.  Jane has ben walking on all four feet.  Got a letter from Uncle Bert.  Was very surprised

February

Sun Feb 1  -- Managed to arise in time eat breakfast with Shan then went back  to bed until after ten. Worked from 1 till 6.  Made one dollar counting on the new pay scale of 20 an hour. Jr. Russell has een here all afternoon and evening. We turned out the lights and set by the fire.  Being patriotic by saving juice. Dad ate ten o’clock lunch – bread – cream – meat + coffee.  Very appetizing.

Mon Feb 2 – Everyone seems to be getting awkward around her. I fell down the other day.  Jr. R. fell over the yard fence and Olie fell about the same place I did.  Got a letter from Bernice today.  She has been sick.  Shannals and I went to town after kerisine (sic). Jr. R. is here nearly continuous nowadays. I think he is going to the “Fox” over the weekend.  I wonder why.  Je is in bed in my place. I don’t know her I am going to sleep.  4 Defense stamps now.

Tues Feb 3- Dad came home in the middle of last night. I was so sleepy this morning that I very nearly remained in bed. Had hamburgers, peaches & cream for supper. Stayed at Olie’s from 5 until 7. Couldn’t talk in history class, because my voice was shaking and my teeth were chattering with the cold. If I take pneumonia I’ll know where I go tit. I think a two-legged cat (?) ate my chocolate cake.

Wed Feb 4 – Upon waking this morning I discovered everything was frozen over. Slick as ___ until about 8 and then the rain melted it. Has just poured terribly all day long. I sure looked like a drowned duck at noon. Wannie’s Dad brought me home at noon but I walked back. Jr. R was here for supper if you can call it that, rather a snack off the card table in front of the fire.  Got our report cards this evening. I made the honor roll again this month although I don’t know how .

Thurs Feb 5 – Weather is considerably better today. Has stopped raining but is terribly foggy. Dale Burroff and Ben Canine got in a fight and Dale has to walk to school for a week. Washed my hair and am just letting it fly. I think Shan is going to smoke in a little while.  Her resistance is gradually wearing down. Jr. R, Kate & I are going to get to Anie (Janie?)  to stay all night, fix her hair and paint her up like a ____

Fri Feb 6 (329 Days to follow according to the top pages of the diary which keep track of how many days) – Another nasty, muddy day today. It’s rather early for spring rains but nevertheless this weather resembles them. Attending the wedding of Dale Milligan & Don McCullough. Rev. McBrayer was the presiding officer. The blushing bride was beautifully dressed in yellow codoroys with a sweet sweater. The double ring ceremony was performed in the home Ec Room at Waveland HS. Tonight I am painted up again like a “jesabell.”

Sat Feb 7 – Still raining today.  That is getting to be an old story I am afraid.  Jr. R. was here all afternoon and we didn’t get anything done until after 5. I cleaned in the kitchen, ironed, went to town and read since then and now (11:30 p.m.).  Got Kate’s breakfast this morning then went back to bed and was O.D. until 11:30. Disgraceful? Not much. Janie came home from courting at 1:02 awhile ago.  I guess it is bedtime now as I had better “hit the hay.”

Sun Feb 8 – Cleaned up the house with the aid of Jr. & Kate. Didn’t have to work until we get ready & then not at the telephone. Jr. came up again after and yes Dads the pinning party that followed was terrible.  Shan marked a “snipe” with lipstick so that Mom would think she had been smoking. Set the clock up one hour so that it would be ready for tomorrow and “War Time.”

Mon Feb 9 – War Time started to-day and also our school hours were changed.  I ate “out” today at Knuckle’s too to avoid meeting Rufus Jordan but the Dodge wasn’t very successful. Had to see him after school anyway so ----.  The time just flew by. I always behind. Shany called me at school fourth period. Eileen Short came after me and we went trucking out and down to the office. Jr. R. came is here again. I reposed from about 6-8 p.m.

Tues Feb 10 – Started the day by not getting up until 7:30.  Skipped school and went to C’ville to see “How green was my Valley.” It ws supposed to be one of the best shows of the year but personally it wasn’t so good. I still don’t know how it ended. Maybe I’ll find out sometime. Mom went to Goldie’s and Shan got a permanent at Rose Marie’s. Bed – 9:00 – War time.

Wed Feb 11 – Will the wonder never cease? Mom took Dad to C’ville & he took the train to work.  She stayed at Uncle Bum’s the rest of the day.  She is in the off process of her fit of a few days ago. She is considerably calmed down but her pulse is not just right yet. She let us have the car even tonight. Jr, Kate, Enola & I went to see “Moonlight in Hawaii.” It was sure good. Went to the Poncy. Acted very very very nice.

Thurs Feb 12 – Changed the usual wartime at school slightly today. Used the first period to celebrate Lincoln’s birthday.  After school we went to look at  typewriter at C’ville but didn’t take it. Jr. fell down flatter than the flitters in history class.  Baby Conk made a slight break in bookeeping. I guess that after all this has been a very successful day.

Fri Feb 13 – Changed the usual program a little at school today when a man gave a talk on what to do if a bomb hits your home.  He had a bomb with him and explained how it was made.  Jr. R. came up as usual and I think I struck him with a pin that is after so long a time.  I am writing this Saturday moring because it just slipped my mind last night.

Sat Feb 14 – Oh!  How I hate to get up in the morning even at 11 o’clock at least I did this morning.  Clemmie (Mitchell) came over, this afternoon, Raymond (her cousin, Morgan) brought the car home and stayed awhile, then worked this afternoon and I didn’t do much of anything. I certainly would like to have some ice cream but Jr. won’t go after it and neither will I.  Excuse it.  I just had a fight for my rights. Peace now. I just locked Shan & Jr. R. outdoors.

Sun Feb 15 – I feel like the Dickens!  Kitchen stove smoked all morning and made an awful gomb.  Worked from 1-4. Kate came home at night we went to Knuckles ? and got sandwiches, ice cream and chocolate mil.  Jr. brought up something to drink although I couldn’t swear or affirm what.  Worked on my bookkeeping and wrote Dad a letter tonight.

Mon Feb 16 – Bad news!  Singapore fell. It looks like the Japs are about to take us but just wait time will tell of our victory. To get off a heavy subject I might mention that we are about through with Macbeth. It has poured rain down to-day and not stopped a minute. I think it is snowing now. Mom came after me this evening and after running out of gas, drowned ford & locked starter finally go there.  Jr. R has been there looking at himself in the mirror.

Tues Feb 17 – Finished Macbeth!!! It seems too good to be true. However the test is still to come.  I’m “at least one alert” in English McClain says. Talked Beard into postponing our bookkeeping test until tomorrow.  Caught up on all my lessons.  During a “pin” fight Jr. R got his number 12 in the path and Shan fell clean across the floor. Went to town about 9:30 and Janie at(e) cookies.

Wed Feb 18 – Wooo! It’s chilly out. About 14 above to be more specific. Took the ford to town twice and just put it under cover in the garage. Done the very unusual thing to-night and cooked supper  Italian spaghetti, lettuce, fried potatoes, onions, coffee, peaches and chocolate cake. It was awfully good.  Jane’s lady came after him. They set on the porch and cryed awhile.  Then I brunged (sic = goodness and she got A’s in English) him in.  Fell down twice.

Thurs Feb 19 – Breathless moment!!  Icy pavement!! Skid! Surprise, that and then some. Mom let me have the car.  Enola and I stopped to get Max and then went to see “Blondie Goes to College,” it was really hilarious and I do mean that. Of course we went to the Coney and they have nice juke boxes.  Jim signed up for Navy.

Fri Feb 20 – I made unusually good I think.  One hundred in bookkeeping, and I think fairly good in Macbeth.  Shan & I cooked supper supper, again. It is getting to be a habit. Olie was here when I got home from school. She stayed until Jr. R came. Of course we had a fight again.  After an absence of since last night, Jane came home.  Jr. R kicked him and was __ thick & hard.  Jr. is going to kiss Wannie tomorrow.

Sat Feb 21 – I didn’t even eat any breakfast this morning, cleaned up the house, buy groceries for Sunday and everything but take it easy and wash my hair.  Found out that Olie is getting married in March.  Olie, Mrs. Isaacs, Fleece, Jeanie & Jr. were all here this afternoon.  Went to the Geo. Washington supper at the church.  Read “Brave Rand ?” by Seltzer tonight.  Am trying to keep Jane in bed so Jr. & I can’t get him.

Sun Feb 22 – Spent this morning until 12:30 sleeping, good advantage. I am going to lay down in a minute and try to sleep before we go after Dad.  Worked from five until eight. Jr. R. here all afternoon and Kate & I cleaned up the house. Went up to Olies a little while this evening. I don’t want to go after Dad at all, but I haven’t any choice. He doesn’t get off till 12:30.

Mon Feb 23 -- 11:30 and I was going to bed at 8:00. Bob and Eva came by for us and we went to the farewell party for Jimmy at Jeffs. He leaves tomorrow for the Navy. There were 33 there.  Had a good supper and a nice time but it was awfully sad.  However I think that he will get along all right. I’ve got to get to bed at once. PS It is really freezing zero out.

Tues Feb 24 – This was one of my unlucky days. Overslept until 8:30 didn’t have time to eat breakfast or comb my hair. Then lost the heel off of my shoe & Beard & Hallett sprung surprise tests. I made terrible. Twinkle stopped awhile and Olie went up to Ida’s.  Had vegetable soup for supper also chicken and noodles. Kate popped pop corn and then hear (sic) come Jr. R again. Dad went to town awhile. To bed early.

Wed Feb 25 – “Ate breakfast in bed,” I wish I could write that but unfortunately I can’t. I ate with Dad and Shany.  Had two tests and I think I made two 75 also. Mom took Dad to Cville and went on to Lafayette. I don’t know when she will be here. After school Betty Shular and I made butterscotch pie and strawberry ice cream.  Left supper for me and Shan.  Ruth Vaught asked me but stay with her tonight. Jr. R. would like to have the job.

Thurs Feb 26 – Mom got home about 10:30. Aunt Phoebe died at three o’clock. The funeral is Saturday. Had a class meeting and started plans for the reception.  However it doesn’t concern me. It is to be April 3 at Turkey Run. I suppose Waveland and Wingate are once more battling for the privilege of staying in the tourney. Got out at 3:30 this evening.  It hasn’t even seemed like old times. Went to town with Betty and got supper. JR here again.

Fri Feb 27 – Out of jail at 11:30 for a change. It seemed like a bit of heaven. This afternoon I cleaned up the kitchen and helped Kate iron. Leitha came up to get her hair fixed and Rev. Hartling called. Enola and I went to the show in her car.  Jim Moody rode up with us, stopped and got Max  The show was “It started with Eve,” starring Deanna Durbin.  It was really funny. Some cuties followed us home. Brought Shany some cherry pie.

Sat Feb 28 – This begins to look like a sleepless weekend.  Had to get up at the usual time of 7:30.  Went to Aunt Phoebes funeral. It certainly was s Mrs. Payne went with us and we stopped at Knuckles and ate dinner.  Came home and tried to sleep but that is almost impossible to do around here. Fleece was here. Also Ollie & Richard (see March 26th entry).  Bob (Roberta) and Heck finally got hitched.  It was really surprising.

Note:
Aunt Phoebe” would be Hulda’s great aunt, Phoebe Jane Barker Lawson (born 4 April 1863 in Parke County, daughter of John Bryant and Annie (Sowers) Barker, sister to her grandmother, Amanda Catherine Barker Morgan (who had passed away in 1930). Died 25 Feb 1942 buried Centennial Cemetery, Fountain County, Indiana.  Roberta and Heck would be Roberta Everman and Harold “Heck” Gilliland!”

March
Sun Mar 1 – March started out with a wonderful day, but I didn’t get to enjoy it very thoroughly. Just mostly heard people talking about it over their telephones.  Worked several hours 12-4-6-9, had tea up there with Shan. Meat loaf sandwiches, cokes, ice cream and milky ways. Didn’t read hardly any, just set.  Mrs. Everman let e off a half hour early. It’s nearly ten o’clock and I was going to be at nine.

Mon Mar 2 – We thought that spring was here too soon I guess.  Anyway it has snowed all day but isn’t any on the ground after all day. Things went fairly smooth at school today. Nothing worthy of mention happened.  Shan didn’t eat breakfast with me and I burned the pork chops to two (sic) crisps. Went up to Ollies tonight. She is all packed and ready to leave.  Got a letter from Raymond Kessner.  He is in Texas.

Tues Mar 3 – I’ve been a busy little bee today. Literature test and Hallett was on a high horse. Came home and wrote letters to Bernice, Raymond and Uncle Bert, also sent Ruth Yount a card. Went up to Ollies again and then washed my hair, gave myself a manicure and last of all made some hot chocolate and fried pork chops.  Jr. R .is still here, but is acting better than usual.

Wed Mar 4 – I even surprised myself this month. Made four As. That was really surprising. Drank hot chocolate and ate a pork chop sandwich for supper and breakfast instead of coffee.  Had a show at school to-day. There were no stars in it. The title was “Seeing Indiana,” and “The bombing of Pearl Harbour.”  Mabel is here & it is eleven o’clock. Jr. R also is here.

Thur Mar 5 – Drastic methods were adapted at school today. First offense – expelled for 2 days. Second offense – expelled permanently. All of the teachers have been on a high horse.  The punishments were for anyone of a dozen acts. Dad & some men came home a little while at noon.  Marjorie & Enola came after me at noon.  Mars ? got her ring. When I arrived home from school there was no one home. Kate came in a little while, then Thelma & finally Mom.

Fri Mar 6 – Things have really quieted down at school, it was high time. Mom, Lola & Harry went to C’ville.  Mom bought fish & chicken. I fried the fish for supper. We only have seven more weeks of school this year. I sure am tired of it. Junior Russell came up tonight and we sang. SANG?  I would hardly call it that but anyway we gave it a good try.

Sat Mar 7 – Got up early (in my estimation to-day, in fact about 9 o’clock). Today was Mom’s birthday but she had all of her presents before to-day. Shan & I forded to C’ville to see Betty & Benny Fox perform 125’ in  the air on an 18’ platform. It was really good. Bought us both a pair of shoes, to that we needed them. Talk to Betty and Max awhile (Betty and Max are their first cousins – Morgans).

Sun Mar 8 – All wise people will stay tucked tightly in bed to-night. It began raining early last night and continued until about four this evening. Then it started snowing & blowing something fierce.  It is still snowing and getting worse. Shan & Jr. R. went after Dad although it was a foolish thing to do. I worked from 5-8 this evening.

Mon Mar 9 – Lucky day at school.  McClain was snowed under at least she never got to school.  It was my day to tell ten pages in literature but we didn’t have class so … Worked on my bookkeeping tonight & wrote 0/-Jo a ).. (shorthand stuff I can’t figure out how to type nor can I read it anymore to tell you what it says even though I used to be able to write it at 180 wpm).  My good deed was you’d never guess it, I built the fire for Shany. Shan and I went to town and ate at Red’s and Sharps. To bed at 9:30.

Tue Mar 10 – At last the long dreaded day arrived, to tell 10 page of history of the sketches in the Spectator in literature. Actually after I finally got started it wasn’t so bad. I cut it short to about 8 pages. Mom finally wrote apologies to Enola for that letter she sent. We have had the same old drudge all day with not even a test for excitement.  Kate worked to-night for Helen. I should have washed my hair and got my book but didn’t do anything.

Wed Mar 11 – The ford is gone now for two weeks. I wonder what we’ll do. I haven’t the faintest idea. Went to the show with Norman and Enola “seen” Dr. Kildare’s Victory. It certainly was a lot better than I supposed it would be. It never happens but once in a life time, but we never went to the Coney.  Instead we went to the Speed Grill. I don’t like it nearly as well. Very nearly didn’t give the ticket man our tickets.

Thur Mar 12 – Not much to write for today. Everything was relatively (?) and everyone is beginning to get spring fever I got out my jacket it more than enough. Came home, got in the coal, went to town with Betty, stopped at Ollie’s built a fire, took a ride on Jr. R bicycle, read the paper, got my supper, washed my hair, penned up my hair, gave myself a manicure and talked to Enola. After that I gassed (?) with Mom, Shan & Jr. R.

Fri Mar 13 – Unlike public opinion usually runs this was ot frequented by any especially bad luck, that is with one exception and that was a history test – surprise you know. With the end of this week we have only six more weeks of school. That makes six too many. Shan just brought Jane in here and he is giving me a bad time. By that I mean kicking, playing & etc. I think Jr. R is kind of peeved.

Sat Mar 14 – I worked until I nearly dropped today. Didn’t begin until 12:30 but every minute counted.  I cleaned up all four front rooms and kitchen. Made some candy tonight and Ollie, Mrs. Isaacs & Jr. R. were here.  We talked about dreams, wrecks, death & everything even murders.  This morning I rolled up my pajama breeches, put on my coat and went to town to get some groceries for breakfast.

Sun Mar 15 – I’m all out for defense today. I’m saving material by wearing my dress “really” short.  Worked for five really long hours.  Betty and I went walking this evening.  Shan and I went uptown after some oranges & RCs.  We then proceded to prove the theory, “I’d walk ten miles for a camel,” was all wet.  I don’t know how Shan feels about it all but my stomach is churning, my brain whirling and my knees are awfully weak. Jr. R throwed Jane in the fish pond. War is coming I fear.

Mon Mar 16 – There isn’t enough room for everything that happened today so I’ll just hit the highlights. I thought school would never end but finally the expected happened. Anyway I came home with Enola went on the paper route, gossiped, ate supper, washed dishes, took our long postponed “midnight or moonlight” walk and talked to Lucille Redden awhile. We about wore the road out but didn’t accept any so-called “lifts”. Came home, ate, shined shoes & sewed on my collar & cuffs.

Tue Mar 17 – Got up bright and early. Ready to leave for the city by six o’clock, bought everything from A to Z.  Went to the show at Lowe’s.  The main feature, “To be or not to be,” was Carole Lombards last picture. The other was a lot the best, it was the “Brooklyn Orchid,” that may be misspelled but it will pass.  Ate a sundae and came, that is, started home at 3 o’clock. Went on paper route, ate supper & came home.  Really exciting day. We about got knocked off.

Wed Mar 18 – Such a way to start the day. Minus kerosene, so had to use strawberry boxes for kindling, but after an English test out of a clear sky things went better. After dinner the Seniors put on a program. Dad takes a Rest Cure, it changed the routine at least. Shan got supper and of course Jr. R came up and we had a fight. I just started piddling and still am. Cut Shan’s picture to fit into my identification tag.

Thur Mar 19 – Dorothy has a 8# 11 oz baby girl.  Delores Jane born Wednesday morning. Dad got a letter to report for his examination at the uluminum (sic) plant. Had a test in bookkeeping made terrible I think. Everyone had spring fever at school today.  It sure was nice. After school I came home and got supper for “just me.” I enjoyed it a lot. Jr. R didn’t come up so I went to meet Shan. Bed at 8:30. Note: Dorothy Morgan Breedlove’s daughter, Delores Jane Breedlove.

Fri Mar 20 – My feet are giving me h___. Went walking with Kathryn Arvin and then went to faculty vs teacher – bus drivers. It really was a scream. The teachers came out and undressed down to their underwear. Everyone just screamed. Dad went to see about his job at Lafayette. It was hard to find enough money to go to the ballgame but after searching a pocket and begging, I finally got the required amount.

Sat Mar 21 – First day of spring although judging by the snow flurries throughout the day the logical conclusion would be the first day of winter. Dad went back at noon just a little while after Aunt Blanche came.  Shan & I gave the kitchen a good cleaning not that it needed it but just for fun. Ollie came down we got to laughing. Cleaned up and went to work at seven, stayed there for an hour then came home & went after the groceries.

Sun Mar 22 – Stayed in bed and rested until about 10:30. Shan went down to Jr. house for dinner. Worked an hour (1-2) then went down to Wannie’s. Came home & baked a chocolate pie that was really delicious. Got in a family fight over Jr. R and the ice cream, he & it has kind of blown over now. Went to work again at 7 and stayed until 9:30. They were a half hour late. Florence Cowan died while I was working.

Mon Mar 23 – Went to see Dorothy & late family. Max and I went to see Martha Raye in “Hillsappoppin.” Funny! Funny~ Funny! Laugh! Laugh! Laugh that’s all it was, not a particle of sense or story to it. Of course we had to have a coney.  In the news it showed Gen. MacArthur all through his life, beginning when he graduated form West Point until now.  Not much happened at school.  Just nearly murdered my two good neighbors!  *)/)III and a bunch more things (doesn’t even look like shorthand – just marks saying she must be mad I’d think)

Tues Mar 24 – Poor poor Janey – someone or something bit out a larning ? big hunk of his hind leg and also a piece of his ear. If I find out what done it there is going to be drastic measures of retaliation. Some things seem to never have an end, at least that’s what I thought while slivering pineapple to make some whip that isn’t even fit to eat. I then washed my hair and didn’t do one single solitary thing to it. I kneow it will look beautiful in the morning.

Wed Mar 25 – I never thought we had many dishes until I started to wash them. They were every one dirty and now I know that there are several.  I scipped (sic) school this afternoon and went with Mom & Shan to take Dad home. He was like a bear all time he was at home.  Mrs. Koling died last night. I think it was her heart. Bought two pairs of socks this evening at town. Hazel Moore came down and gassed until 9:30.

Thu Mar 26 – The long anticipated day of Viola’s wedding finally arrived. She is Mrs. Romulus Boyd by now I guess.  Had our hearing tests this morning and played monitor to the first and second grade also. It was really some fun. Since Mom has gotten so dainty she couldn’t stand to look at Jane’s sore foot as Shan and I bandaged it up. He didn’t like it very well. Ida was here a little while and had a terrible cold (note: Ida is Viola’s sister – Ida Isaacs Douglas – Ida had one child, Richard mentioned a time or two in other entries)

Fri Mar 27 – Four weeks more of school.  That is four too many. Had a test in bookkeeping over F&G terminology. Took the ford to school this afternoon and went down after Wannie. Went to work from 5 until 6. Got along OK. Have been preparing for the big day tomorrow. I am the first bookkeeping team. Ate two hot ham sandwiches and some bannanas. Jr. R came down as usual but just set and nothing exciting happened.

Sat Mar 28 – Enough exciting happened today to make up for the dull days before. Went to the bookkeeping contest but didn’t win anything. Jean won a $30 scholarship to Central Normal. That town lost many of us forever swiped spoons, copped chocolate milk and dropped them every uny ? we could. Played bridge with Virgil Hunt, president of CHS.  Jean called a dummy.  It was too embarrassing. Home at twelve.

Sun Mar 29 – This morning I felt as though I had been out on a great big limb lost night. Anyway, Janie and I slept till noon.  Then got up ate dinner got cleaned up and went to work at noon. Bud Hankins visited us at the telephone office awhile.  His big bassy voice and grown up clothes about Knoebel the props out from under us.  After work play rummy with Jr R and listened to the Hermit. Scary? Not much.

Mon Mar 30 – Things went from had to worse. First it began snowing and continued all day, then I had to give Dicken’s life in Lit and last Beard sprang a surprise monthly test. Cooked supper and Jr. R ate with us. I ate enough for four people, that’s not patriotic but that’s the way it is. Jr. R went home about seven and is working tonight, therefore he wasn’t up here for a  rare change.

Tues Mar 31 – Rested easy all morning at school with hardly anything to do for a change, but this afternoon things were different. We had what in my opinion was the toughest history exam this year. After school Betty came over and we washed a raft of dirty dishes and arranged things in the cabinet and safe. Then Kathryn Arvin, Jr R, Shan and I went to see Lou Costello & Bud Abbott in “Ride ‘em Cowboy.” I laughed till I thought I’d die.

April
Wed Apr 1 – Report card day!  McCLain jerked me down to B in Lit. That made me 3 A’s and 1 B.  Could be worse but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Betty came over after school and we jumped the rope, went to town and fried hamburgers and made coffee, also fixed some fruit salad. Spent most of to night shining shoes.  Not a bad occupation after you get started.

Thurs Apr 2 – Made 100 on our SMN Bookkeeping Terminology test. That was a surprise. Betty ate supper with me, hamburgers, hot chocolate and peaches.  After that she washed my hair and I penned it up. Thelma O’Brian has been over most of the day also Mary. Tonight I done a good days washing. Wound up the machine about eight o’clock and started in. Didn’t finish until 9:30. Fine life – if you don’t weaken.

Fri Apr 3 – Will see some changes made when I am eighteen years old. Fabe (Fabian Friz) called and wanted me to work at the Shades over Sunday but Mom set her foot down but we’ll see in about 2 more years. The school went to Good Friday services at Presbyterian Church. Hessel was all dressed up in a big black robe – UGH!  To-night went to town and bought some ice cream, candy, etc. Raked leaves after school.

Sat Apr 4 – I feel like the north end of an elephant headed south. Thelma, Vera, Shan and I went to Terre Haute in the ford. Run around like ten house on fire all day. My legs are like two big packages of pain. Had chicken and noodles for dinner, bought the town nearly out. Never had so much fun in my life. After we got home we found there were two buttons missing off my coat. Waited for Shan under window.  Russle Hannah lost at sea.

Sun Apr 5 – The reception got along just fine without me and me without it, so I guess everything is fine & dandy. After sleeping until after noon, Shan and I dressed up without anywhere to go. Borrowed Thelma Hunt’s camera and took and took some pictures. Mickey Heinen kept me company while I worked 5-8.  Mom had supper ready when I got home. Jr. R & I had a fight after I slapped him.

Mon Apr 6 – Two more weeks of school after this one – then freedom!  Will I ever be glad> Got through the day exceptionally well with no bookkeeping class greatly contributing to the peace and comfort of my mind. Dad came home and is grouchier than seven hundred bears.  I have been paying solitary while waiting for Myron to bring our pictures – no luck yet. Shan  Jr went town & got us something for super. I feel like I will die.

Tue Apr 7 – Personally I don’t feel much more educated than I did this morning but anyway I have another day of school chalked up to my credit. Kate and I go supper and much to our surprise Dad didn’t snurl up his nose at it but really ate a lot. After Twinkle (her uncle, brother to her dad, Carol – Claude 1887-1950) came, Dad & Kate, Jr. Rand I played rummy. Twinkle seems to be lost since Aunt Emy has gone on to another land.  (note: I have no clue who that is – he had a sister Emma but she outlived him. Hmmm)

Wed Apr 8 – This was a heck of a day.  At noon I didn’t have any idea it would rain – therefore did not wear a headgear of any description. Just my luck, when we started to come home after school it was imply pouring down rain. I nearly drownd (sic). Mom & Shan took Dad back to work and they were foolishing this is my opinion  went shopping in the rain at Greencastle.  Janey jumped upon my back while I was standing by the stove.

Thurs April 9 – Still raining!  Will it never stop?  Well it doesn’t look like it would. I still have hopes though. Gracie Allen is on the radio, if she isn’t silly I never seen anyone that is. Jr. R showed up to-night after being absent for one night. It only happens once in a lifetime. Mom came after me at noon & this evening both. Then I got supper & Shan got sick. Thelma came over a little & I done my fingernails & penned up my hair.

Fri Apr 10 – I can’t write very much to night because my writing is under observation (Jr R). Ohhh. Had fight. I ain’t just talking for the privacy of this little book. Oh me! Oh my @ What a life. The Senior day was a washout in my estimation.  Wannie and I went. Set with Marjorie Hester. I came out of the fight with purple ink on the collar of my new dress, all over my hands and completely winded.  I feel like I could die.

Sat Apr 11 – Oh@ but it was wonderful to get to sleep until noon without a single interruption. While we were eating breakfast, Ida May came.  Then came Thelma. This afternoon Wannie & Vesta came up. (Still no clue who Wannie is but Vesta is Vesta Cotton daughter of Wes Cotton who for awhile was janitor at Waveland school with my gpa’ Hulda’s dad, Carl).  They didn’t stay very long. After they left, I went up to visit Shan (she must have been at work at the telephone company). Mom & I had another fight over me working at Turkey Run this time.  It ended up with her in the kitchen crying and me madder than 50 bulls.

Sun Apr 12 – Still not on speaking terms with Mom for most of the day. However the ice is broken slightly by tonight. Jr. R was the main promoting factor.  Working 7 hours today. 11-2-; 4-8. I didn’t mind much Kate & I went to town after some ice cream. Upon returning we noticed something dart in Bant’s bushes. Arriving at the scene there was a man, Jr. R with a white thing (jallo? Car jumped out. Scared? NO!)

Mon Apr 13 – Was very much relieved when Hallett informed us that our history test about the president’s of US had been postponed – only until tomorrow though. Got a letter from Raymond so I guess I’m not caught up with my letter writing after all.   (not sure who Raymond is unless it’s her Uncle Raymond Morgan) Eileen is after Leslie Lee. Funny!  Not much maybe !  I wonder Jr. R got his tooth yanked after school.  It still hurts and is bleeding. Poor J.R.!

Tues April 14 – Will I be dead when the alarm goes off in the morning. I dread to think of it. Two tests, history and bookkeeping just about got me clear down. That history is terrible. Kathryn, Max, and I went to see Bob Hope in Louisianna Purchase. It was really good. After the show we walked out to Uncle Nigs to get Mom and had to visit awhile Nearly cussed when we had a flat tire.

Wed Apr 15 – If Mr. Jeannie will mover.  (?) I’ll will try to record a few of the happenings (oh, if the cat moves, she’ll write but now instead of Janie it’s Jeannie – crazy).  I guess I’m not the only one that gets called names. Helen Linton told Shan that her mother called her old fat legs. Yesterday she said I was a silly old thing. Kate, Betty and I went riding. Went to Mabel’s a little while and got some ice cream at west Turkey Run. Terrible test in literature.

Thu Apr 16 – At IOU (?) my hands feel like someone was rubbing sandpaper on them. After school I raked a little yard and wore three blisters. That is the reward for a little honest toil. Lestmo (?) called Kate a, maybe I shouldn’t write it but here goes – Shitass. I would like to blister their ___.  If Hallett isn’t a good one. He gave us a test in current events for the last month after saying we wouldn’t have one.

Fri Apr 17 – My hands sure are terrible and they certainly arent getting any better. The last day for the Seniors!  IF I was only one of the lucky ones, I certainly wouldn’t be here but out celebrating. After school I was informed that upon my arrival home I was supposed to get busy. Unlucky day!  Tried to paint but the brush was like a __ stiff board so decided to just rest.

Sat Apr 18 – Horrors!  Janie done another pile or puddle in the dining room. I guess this was his last time in the house.  I certainly have been a busy little or jack of all trades today. Painted woodwork, Mom’s furniture in her bedroom, baked a chocolate pie, and ironed a little.  Mabel came over and stayed till just now 12:30 Jr. R> came about 11. I hope Shan doesn’t get me up early in the morning.

Sun Apr 19 – I can’t figure why I let Jane in after the trick he pulled last night but anyway he’s right here. Jr. R. was here for dinner I nearly starved before we got ready to eat. Ruth, June, Nine, Keith, JD Dishie & Jerry came in just as we were about ready to eat but they wouldn’t stay. Worked from 5 -8 to-night. It was unusually busy for Sunday.  Kate & JR went up to Vera’s & Roys tonight.

Mon Apr 20 – Mom rolled out of bed on the strike of six to go after Dad, another time a team of horses couldn’t pull her out at ten.  Got supper for Dad and me early, the rest were afraid to eat it. Didn’t have one single test today, that was certainly news.  Correction!  We had our final spelling test. Shan put Jane out his door.  I sure wish he was in bed with us.  It seems incomplete without him.

Tues Apr 21 – One of our history tests is over. It most surely wasn’t very easy. I thought one would be plenty but the majority still rules so therefore we have two. Got supper, I mean Kate and I.  It had a lot of room for improvement but still it could have been worse. I suppose that by now the Seniors have received their diplomas. Next years will be among the lucky ones, I hope.

Wed Apr 22 – My tail feathers are gathering dust they are dragging so low. No wonder!  Bookkeeping and history tests this afternoon. After school Kathryn Arvin and I went walking down the railroad track, ten trousels (sic) down.  Mom fed me some hamburgers when I got home. They really tasted good. Dad took the ford and started back at noon.  I don’t suppose we’ll get to go any place for 2 weeks now.

Thurs Apr 23 – The day of glory finally arrived but the only celebrating I done was a lamming big washing this afternoon, but I sure am glad school is out. Didn’t have to go until 10 this morning either. Shan is completely all in with a boil between her eyes. Mary & Betty were over tonight. I am just about as tired tonight as I was last and can look forward to the same condition for a long time to come.

Fri Apr 24 ---Dabbled in a little bit of every trade.  Swamping (mapping), dish washing, ironing & etc.  Martha came up to get her hair fixed and Mom got madder than 75 bulls because we accused Mary of tatting not to her face of course.  Poor Janie. We gave him a bath. He never liked it but nevertheless he sure looks cleaner & lot fluffier & handsomer.

Sat Apr 25 – Was making garden by 7:30 this morning and had finished by 9. Went to get the verdict. It could have been worse. (Note: she went to get her report card assumedly but guess it wasn’t anything to brag about – she usually got very good grades unlike my mother).  Cleaned up the house this evening and slept all afternoon.  Worked from 5-30 to 8 o’clock. Nothing exciting happened. Jr. came up in his green ford. It sure seems funny to ride in it.  He rode us to town after the grocers. Read until 11 (wish we knew what she was reading – my mother read Modern Romance magazines all the time but don’t think my Aunt Hulda did – kbz).

Sun Apr 26 – Took a vacation from hard work for a change.  Got up an ate breakfast with Kate & Jr then came back to bed until after ten. Worked from twelve to five.  Some bashful men or so they said came in to call their girls. They sure were silly.  Went to bed at eight, excuse that I mean I wrote or began to write this then Shan “borrowed” my fountain pen and I was in bed a half hour before she finally came (to bed).

Mon Apr 27 – I wonder what is wrong with me that I can’t find any mushrooms.  Kate and I went and I only found about 1/6 as many as she did. Kathryn & I went the to the show with Enola.  Bing Crosby in “Birth of the Blues” it sure was good (she always loved Bing Crosby).  We rode to Browns Valley with Gabby Brooks. He was on his way to register (for draft).  Brought home pin (?) & sandwitches (sic) and had a party. I’d better get to bed now.  (Note: my mom was a wow mushroom hunter. I was good, too only ended-up with poison ivy every time we went. Aunt Sis never could find any. We’d be gone for 5-6 hours. Mom and I had huge bags full and she’d have a half dozen).

Tue Apr 28 – Done a comparatively small washing this morning and slept all afternoon. Bill’s nose started bleeding again and they took him to the hospital.  Betty stayed with me while Mary was gone.  We fried hamburgers for supper and then look at some old typing budgets. Betty combed my hair for about an hour. She went home about ten.

Wed Apr 29 – Up at 6:30 and here I thought I could sleep till noon when school was out. I guess I’m getting a fooling. Tried to paint but the paint wouldn’t work so didn’t accomplish much but to get the kitchen torn up. Mom & us had the usual fuss because we treat her & dad like they were dogs or something. Slept this afternoon. Mary. Thelma & Minnie Kritz were here tonight.

Thurs April 30 – Am I the awkward oh!  I can’t even paint without spilling it in the middle of the floor. So much for that but I know I’ll never live it down. We got Isaac’s porch swing and table. Alva Good hung the swing for us . Shan & I went to town to get something to eat and talked to Frank and Martha. They sure are funny. Shan fed Janie cream!

MAY
Fri May 1 – It begins to look like I may be left sitting in a bare and empty room when Shanual’s leaves. I have been looking at the catalog trying to determine what to get if she does get hitched. She sure would make a swell married lady because she can’t even tell dots from mesh.  We painted again today found after Shan got home from work we went mushrooming.

Sat May 2 – Lots of excitement today, even a fire at MacIntire’s barn. Cleaned up the house, scrubbed the kitchen floor and waxed it. Mabel came over tonight and stayed till 12:10. Jr. R got a sample of drenching today. It begun raining on him over by Rville and by the time he got here he was soaked through so much for that.  I think I will sleep late in the morning.

Sun May 3- JR was the first up this morning.  Him and Shan went down to his house for dinner. Shan met all of the family.  I slept all afternoon on the davenport. We went to work and stayed till 8. That’s 90 cents to my credit. It’s been really raining all day. It certainly will make our gardens grow. Jr. R. has been a tie (?) and Janie and I after been after him. There is going to be war.

Mon May 4- It is impossible to work while Dad slept so I just stayed in bed till nearly 12. It sure seemed good. Shan & I took the ford and went jaunting and mushrooming because Mom and Dad were like two old bears. After we got home I slept some more, in fact three hours. Made Dad some vegeatable soup about 8:30 and now to bed at nearly nine. I hope Jean comes to bed.

Tues May 5 – After much fretting and fuming Shan cast her first vote. She sure was nervous though. Dad, Shan & I went to C’ville this morning. Got mom some Mothers day presents, curtains, skirts, aprons, and etc. Worked from 5:30 to 8:00 tonight. Get along just fine. After work, Shan & I went to town and bought some roller skates. Watched for news now.  Then dishes and dirty ones at that.

Wed May 6 – Took Dad to meet the train this morning.  Got there about an hour early and just sat. Then went to see What’s Cookin with the Andrews’ Sisters & Gloria Jean.  It was all modern jazz and jive not so bad.  Got along on my skates without spilling. What a wonder !!!  Jr. R came up tonight and about killed me. Mom was mad.

Thurs May 7 – Rather hectic day in one sense of the word. Decided to go to C’ville and get a lamp.  I was going to the Vanity but I found it wasn’t open in the afternoon so I went to see “What’s cookin’ Again.”  I enjoyed it for the second time anyway. Then Mom got mixed up on the time & didn’t come until about 1 ½ late. That made Shan later to work. Betty & I skated.

Fri May 8 – 237 days to follow, 128th day (this is on top of each page doing a tally but don’t want to type ‘em all) – I am just about worn to the breaking point. I just about postponed writing my daily masterpiece but never.  Slept until ten this morning. Mom went to Mrs. Payne’s, us kids papered and Thelma came over. We still haven’t the kitchen wall papered & its nearly 11 o’clock.  Betty & I skated ? ?  Took Willie’s paper over & showed Thelma the letter about the Hannah boy.

Sat May 9 – I have tried samples of various kinds of careers today, papering, cooking, lawn drying (?), house cleaner, etc but found nothing that I would choose for my lifetime profession  Jr. came up this evening. Kate got supper. I guess the free show must be progressing all right without me although I don’t know how they are.  I think I will write some letters.

Sun May 10 – Slept until I just barely had time to get dressed, eat dinner and be at work by 1.  Worked from 1-4:30. Came home. Washed my hair, talked to Thelma and went back at 6 and worked ill 8.  Came home and was framed up on. Jr R & Kate, although they still plead innocent. I am positive they set the chewing gum for me to sit in.  It sure was agorn? I retaliated by watering them.

Mon May 11 – Every night I go to bed I think I’m tuckered then I was before but tonight stands out. We have been cleaning house all day and are torn up in the front rooms. Tore off paper all evening and put on a few strips of paper to see how it is going to look.  Not so good I’m afraid. The grocery bill was $5 this month.  Mom started shedding crocodile tears and going on preaching about eating left overs.

Tues May 12 – Our big job is nearly finished. Shan & I Put on the front room sidewalls today and Roy & Vera done the ceiling tonight. We were supposed to do the pasting an did most of it. After they finished we made coffee and fried hamburgers. They sure did taste good.  Jani has been a very good boy today outside most of the time.  He about starved since his hamburger supply is shut off.

Wed May 13 – After I waxed around the rug, Mom decided that she would enamel it. If that wasn’t disgusting. I can’t know what is. Jr. R. came after saying that he wasn’t and throwing a jealous fit. I fixed hamburgers for supper. Kathryn & I went down to Wannies but she wasn’t home so we sat on the bridge awhile then bought dreamsticks & sat on the other bridge & also ate peanuts.  Came home 10:30.

Thurs May 14 – We spent all day trying to chase down a bicycle and finally found one at Fritts shop so for $25 we are now the proud possessors of a Shiny bicycle.  Thelma also bought her one. Twinkle, Thelma, Little Eddie, Shan & I went up in the ford to get it and had some good clean fun. We can hardly go to shop for looking at it. I worked from 1:30-4:30.

Fri May 15 – I have the feeling that I may have to be pried out of bed in the morning. Thelma, Little Eddie & I took a long jaunt on our bicycles, I think we traded mounts a dozen times.  Thelma, Annette, Dickie & I took our bike back to Fritts to get it fixed. It wasn’t anything serious thank goodness. Enola came down & rode Kate & I. then we put down the dining room rug. Some fun!

Sat May 16 – Oh@!! My Gosh!!  But I am beginning to feel the effects of two (sic) much cycling.  Thelma ran over a man’s car wrapped herself around the bumper. Shan learned to ride & spilled up town.  We have been riding all day. Thelma, Dick, Annette, & I and Little Eddie went to Cville in Servies car but he didn’t know it. It began smoking & scared us some.

Sun May 17 – Oh!  What fun what a wonderful time we had today riding the three miles to the plant in 20  minutes but it was sure different coming back. Shan got Don Warren’s bike & Big Eddie is remodeling it. Jr. R’s mother called and he went home this morning. I worked an hour at noon and had trouble with renters and also from 5 to 8 tonight. Annette learned to ride.

Mon May 18 – My two weeks of drudgery began today by work from 12:30 – 5:30. This will be a regular story for awhile now.  Dad came home with some men brining hickory furniture, then Mom went to Dr. Ball and they took Shan to Aunt Rush? Bearl? But Jr. R. went after her. So I got supper then Betty & I rode the bike.  Bill Hunt & Drew Dillman got them home. Thelma & I ran off from Mary Eversparker (?) & took a ride.

Tues May 19 – Finally I got my bed made.  Jean jumped up faster than I could put him off but I finally wn out. Worked again from 12:30 – 5:30. Got into it with 182 (LOG/s). Went bicycle riding with Betty.  Twinkle (her uncle Claude Smith) came down.  Then Thelma & I went riding without any casualties and got dad some zink oxide. I sure hate to put Jeanie out but I guess I have to.

Wed May 20 – Time 1:10 a.m. Thelma, Little Eddie and I tore off all the kitchen paper while Edison and Luvie ? got their rest. Some fun if you don’t weaken. Betty & I took Jeanie walking over the hill and across the tressle but the rocks hurt his feet and therefore I had to pack him home more fun.  Got our first strawberries from the garden this evening. They were fairly nice considering the age of the patch.

Thur May 21 – Put in the morning until 11 sleeping A good way if you ask me.  Got along fair while working from 12-5. Could have done better. Mom caught Jene a house last night.  Betty & I ride around by Jargoes. Didn’t have to hoof it up a single.  Then Thelma & Little Eddie joined us and we rode to the plant. Home at 9:30. Bed after eating 10:10.

Fri May 22 – If the world doesn’t end soon, I’ll be surprised. First of all, as good as his word, Mr. Lindley sent us a box of chocolate.  Then I just discovered a big big big pile of P ---P in the wardrobe. I got up when Thelma came over this morning and we went riding on business.  Called Shan this evening to tell her all the news, but couldn’t hear. Sent Lindley a card.

Sat May 23 – Passed the day rather quietly. Never rode my bike an inch even. Swept the floor this morning then went to work at 12/ Nothing at all funny happened. Finally found 2 extra pennies to pay Russell and am flat broke now. Went to town after the groceries after work and picked me a few strawberries to eat. Cleaned up Jean’s big green pile. Urped!!!

Sun May 24 – I was brutally awakened by the ringing of the telephone someoning (sic – summoning) to me to work at nine. Mrs. English came in and had me call for her. She said Hermie is working at Lafayette. I spent eight and a half hours working, $.70 I guess.  I wish I had it in cash because I even had to stand off the paper boy for just a dime.  Mom & I discussed finances until 10:30. Now to bed!

Mon May 25 – Started my second week of drudgery without mishaps or a single fight. After work Thelma, Betty and I picked strawberries. Have more than I know what to do with. Then Eddie got Shan’s bike fixed and we took a ride.  In fact, more than one. Bill squirted mine with dope and aired the tires.  Then we ended it by Thelma buying us an orange. Clemie here when I got home.

Tue May 26 – Wakened this morning to find Gr. Had come sometime last night. Phooey (and such a tummy aches). Seven bike loads of us went riding after work. Betty & I, Donna Sur (?) stopped in front of Lucille and I causing us to spill and is my knee sore. Thelma, Annetta, Dick, Betty & I rode after that. I sure am resigned (?) looking to my bed clothes. Dad’s pajamas, breeches and his contrasting shirt.

Wed May 27 – Slept right through all the fun tonight. I laid down on mom’s bed and went to sleep and mom didn’t or wouldn’t wake me up to ride. Everyone else butme; I think were out there. I got a letter from Sahn this morning. It was high time. I’m going to write to Raymond and maybe Bernice before I go to sleep.

Thurs May 28 – Got our new hotplate this morning.  It sure is dandy all white with still burners. Mr. Woods called and wanted me to work but I couldn’t so I rode down to Wannie’s to see if she wanted to but no dice after work and also in the boiling sun. I plowed the garden. It had been so long since I really worked that it seemed funny. Went down to Mary’s but the mosquitoes ran me home in the house.

Fri May 29 – About nine o’clock found me still in bed but with company. Enola took a time exposure of me laying there. I bet that would be good. After work Lucille came up and we rode by White’s and Jargo’s then Betty & I went down to Wannie’s a minute.  Ollie stopped a bit the bib ? Guess what Thelma got her hair cut short again.  I don’t like it very well but – it’s her business, I guess.

Sat May 30 – Worked six hours. Ruth, Jerry & Basil stopped this evening awhile..  We picked strawberries and gabbed. Shan finally came home and along with her most of my clothes. Cooked spaghetti & tomatoes and made sandwiches about 10:30. Then Jr. went back to town and its nearly 12 but no sign of him yet.  Pool, I suppose. We didn’t do any decoration today. I suppose we should have.

Sun May 31 – If wish were daggers, I’d be in my grave.  Jr. R. was in a rather nasty mood and about took everyone’s head off.  He finally went home about 8:30. Good riddance, then Shan & I took a ride or perhaps I should say several rides. We stopped & talked to Hazel Moore awhile. This really has been a scorcer (sic – scorcher?) today only thank heaven it was cool working. That was a surprise.

June
Mon June 1 – It seems rather fantastic but we really went to the show this afternoon.  Costello & Abbott inRio Rite.  Some fun & some laughs!  Finally got a light for my bike. It set me back 1.25 but I guess that’s reasonable. Lucille came up awhile and we all rode uptown to get paint. Big Eddie came over and jubbed a which (?) Kate upset & she says it’s her last ride.

Tues June 2 – I am liable to drop dead on my feet because I’ve had an exceptionally hard day. Shan rolled me out at 7 this morning and we done a big big washing in fact 4 lines full.  Tried to take a nap but could not because of the noise. Heck ~ After Shan got home we ate my strawberry shortcake then I watched Shan dab paint on her bike. She striped it down the back like a Zebra.

Wed June 3 –Shan sure was disgusted this morning. I wouldn’t get up until ten.  We went riding a little ways and she about played out and I upset and skinned my knee.  The excitement was thick and heavy while it lasted.  Hood was going to shoot Hickie. They held guns in each others ribs awhile. Both were afraid to shoot. Mrs. Moore stopped to get acquainted. Then Thelma came over until Lewis came.

Thurs June 4 – Nearly smothered all day ironing and at Nina’s commencement it was torrid. After that we went to Uncle Nigs then uptown for eats to take to Gill’s.  Grabbed and ate all after so long Eva got Bob started home. The speaker was sure punk. I got so hot and tired that I thought I’d pass out.  Left before it was over.  Now – for a good night’s sleep.

Fri June 5 – It was sure a pain in the neck to work today when I wanted to go to C’ville with Enola and Kate but it meant money in my jeans, therefore I stayed at home. Shan brought me some chocolate milk. Enola came down and brought her orange juice and we had supper. Then she came back and we went riding. Now to bedding after talking about Jr. and the Shades.

Sat June 6 – I imagine the show is rained out by now. It’s been steadily pouring for about an hour.  I ironed all morning while Shan cleaned up the two front rooms. This p.m. I washed my hair, mopped the kitchen, cleaned dining room and gossiped to Mom about Jr.  She sure was out with him.  I read awhile after I came to bed. Just one story but it was pretty good. Second Hand Over.

Sun June 7 – I sure would like to take a walk-out powder out of here. This is worse than the Hap episode I do believe. Shan & Jr. had a big round-up and Mom is once more on the war path. Poor Jr. R, he’s so hen-pecked and mistreated. I sure feel sorry for him.  Mom is sitting in there preaching now. If she doesn’t go to bed before long, I’m going riding in my nightie!

Mon June 8 – Mom woke me up real early this morning standing over the bed, preaching!  Wow  Dad got called to the aluminum plant, but called to say he wasn’t going. Worked in the garden and ruined my manicure. It still isn’t over half done.  Rode up to Vera’s tonight. Every one was wanting to ride so she didn’t have a chance to learn.  All the kids Kay, Doris & Francis, Dazey. Then we ate supper there.

Tues June 9 – Have been washing from 7-12.  I just about starved during the process but nevertheless, I got it done.  Now for the ironing. After dinner Shan & I went after our canning sugar and stopped to talk to Hiner and Suz.  They are crazier than the chickens. Then we preceded down to Leitha’s. The night Thelma came over and talked after her cherrying seige and Mary E & ? went to Noblitts for a little snack & fun.

Wed June 10 – Am I down hearted?  Thelma just broke the news as a secret that they are going to Covington .It sure will seem dead without them. They sure are top notch people. Mr. R. came back. I suppose Shan is very happy because she wins out – maybe.  I wouldn’t be too sure. Over at Thelma’s all afternoon. Tonight, she Dick, Annette & I went riding. Mary was over to give us all the gossip.

Thurs June 11 – Ambition overtook me so I fixed a meat loaf for dinner.  Also other things including noodles.  We ate while the honey dippers cleaned our poophouse.  Sweet job – also sweet scent.  I am worried about Jeanie’s safety he jobbied in his momma’s shoe.  Lord!  It was a mess. Wrote about four letters tonight. Thought I would die. Warmed up supper.

Fri June 12 – It’s raining torrents outside now.  I bet it is coming down 60 miles a minute. We decided to start buying our dairy products over at Goods, beginning today. Twinkle came down after dinner and took a ride.  He enjoyed it a lot.  Goldie stopped awhile Mary & Betty were here, Thelma came, also Enola. Had a good time. Worked too defrosting refrigerator, mopping & pulling weeds.

Sat June 13 – Spent the afternoon cooking (pie, meat-loaves).  Good occupation if the spirit doesn’t weaken. It has been pouring rain all day. Everyone got stranded one place or another. Vera & Fleece came down tonight.  We tried to see who could excel in telling the talent stories. No final decision was reached. Jr. R finally decided to come down to earth and is here again for the weekend.

Sun June 14 – Mom made me so nervous trying to help get dinner that I nearly flew away. Aunt Stella, Uncle Nig, Harold Wayne & Jr. R all ate here.  This afternoon Aunt Stella wrapped me into going to Ollie’s with her. What fun!  Went with Shan & Jr. R. down to Knuckles after pancake flour.  Didn’t get to drive Kidded Kate.  Worked a couple of hours.

Monday June 15 – Winter is here again. The coldest rain I nearly ever seen has been falling all day.  Dad just put Jeanie out in it. Poor boy!  We slept all afternoon. Then Shan & I got up and baked some pies. Chocolate & raspberry. I rode my bike uptown in the rain after some – Epsom salts & a couple of magazines. It always fall my lot to buy laxatives and I never even use them.  I feel sorry for myself.

Tues June 16 – The longest jaunt so far I took this evening. Shan & I cycled up to Pine Grove by way of the city dumps then down another country road and as if that wasn’t enough we took the black top out to Fred Myers. Finally home and to the blessed bed. Oh, yes!  Cooked supper and dinner, spilled some of our weekly sugar rations.  I visited Kate all afternoon. I guess that’s about all.

Wed June 17 – Took our parting from Dad at the parking lot. As usual Mom had to kiss him goodbye right in public.  After piddling for about 2 hours and nearly fainting we went to the show The Sunday Punch. Surprise~! It was good. A boxing picture but nevertheless worth our time.  I bought a really cute red & white apron in my estimation – now, I’ll give in to Kate & go to bed.

Thurs June 18 – Hell and highwater busted loose tonight.  I worked from 8-9:30 and Hap called. Lord what a time. Mom has re-entered on the war path and has been preaching a steady sermon. It sure was awful & knocked what change we had of going to the show out. Thelma and I rode up to Browns Valley to collect all the gossip. Not much.  After picking raspberries & washing, I got kind of tired.

Fri June 19 – Of all things to happen they happen to us. When we got up this morning the stove pipe had fallen down. I ate breakfast with Shan then went back to bed until about ten. It rained again this afternoon. Enough is enough, but too much is too much. Kate & I swapped hair washing tonight. Used Ivory soap for shampoo. Mom has really been whistling after supper. Didn’t sound good. Flat bike tire.

Sat June 20 – Got up only the immediate threat of cold water. It seems like I never get to sleep anymore. After Shan got home from work we went up to report the Linton kids to Hicky. The -----. From there we went out to Clemie’s after a chicken in the ford.  Got home and Jr. R. was here. Lord & such company. Went after the groceries & thought we never would get waited on. Finally home.

Sun June 21 – The longest day in the year came and went without much stir. Had a change for dinner – fried chicken – oh boy~!  I worked from 1-5.  Had a message to George Brooks. Shan got out the leftovers from three of four days for supper. Jr. R. got after Jean again. I am getting fed up on his cuteness. I solemnly vow that I will get enough somehow or other.

Mon June 22 – After picking raspberries this afternoon Mom broke down and treated us to a show. Song of the Island with Betty Grable, & Victor Mature. Wow did Betty ever have the swing. I do love Hawaii shows. We stopped to get Enola and Surprisingly enough she hadn’t seen it so we went while Mom stayed at Uncle Nig’s.

Tues June 23 – Mom didn’t get up until nearly eleven and Kate was working so I was very lonely and went to call on Thelma. Kate took her first try at pavement riding when we went to Browns Valley. She got kind of panicky when a car came but we got along better than could be expected. Enola rode home with us.  I went to sleep when we got home. Bed – before dark.

Wed June 24 – Must have been blue Wednesday. At least it seemed like it. Reffet fell off of her running horse. Thought for a while she was hurt bad. Then they rushed May Shular to the hospital for an emergency appendicitis operation.  We had a community baking been at Thelma’s this afternoon. Four raspberry pies & a shell. I just got to taste mine. Mom ate 1 ½ pies. (just an FYI – my grandmother was 4’11” and weight well over 300 # - guess now I know why – she grew-up that way – in fact, their family always ate pie before the meal as my great gpa’ Joseph Nathaniel Morgan always said ya’ had to because you’d be too full afterwards and it was the best part of the eating – they had a pie apiece before they ate the meal)

Thurs June 25 – I don’t get much of a chance to eat any pie. I made a chocolate one this morning and had a lot of help eating it. Shan started G.R. and has had the cramps all day. The poor bunny the tooth Janie over to Goods after the milk.  I think Ollie would like to have him back.  She’d better not try to get him or there will be a big fight.

Fri June 26 --- Had a lot of fun over the “watermelon” dress. Old story. Baked a cherry pie and picked raspberries. Enola came down tonight to try to call Jimmie but no luck. I suppose she’ll try again. We took a long long long midnight walk (my aunt always loved to walk in the middle of the night) then got tired of walking & got out the bikes. Some drunk dumb dodo acted silly. Funny funny funny. Talked to Georgie Brooks.

Sat June 27 – (not sure this is her writing but not my mom’s.  Maybe just tired and scrawly.  She’d never written out names before though) – Betty Jo Shular, Hulda May Smith, Catherine (must not be her writing as Mom’s name is spelled Kathryn) Geneva Smith. I just about killed myself working up cleaning the house – eating chocolate pie, etc. Betty & I rode up to Kathryn Arvin’s. She went with us down to Wannies. We are planning a picnic Sunday – pray for sunny weather. Betty is staying with me tonight. We have a very poor memory as we proved.

Sun June 28 – Kathryn Arvin, Roy, Vera & Leon, Betty, Jr, Shan & I splurged. We went to the Shades for a picnic, then we went to Turkey Run. Didn’t get any supper and wore ourselves to frazzles (she loved to hike at the Shades even in her late years).  Decided to make ice cream after we got home. The same bunch came down.  The ice cream burned & we had fun talking about Joe Lambert. Bill isn’t home yet so Betty is staying with me again.

Mon June 29 – After such a hard day yesterday I slept real real late. Leon & Vera picked the berries. Everyone & everything has nearly smeltered in the terrible heat. Mom went to meet Dad by herself. I drank three bottles of pop today. Got them over at Hunt’s new place. I nearly had a chance to use my first aid kit during some of Shan’s many falls off the bike.

Tues June 30 – Spent a hard morning doing the weekly laundry. Some job!! Then went to C’ville and piddled around.  Nearly wore myself & my feet especially to the bone and didn’t buy anything but a whirligig.  Shan got a blouse, slip and shoes. Went over to Thelma’s and sat on the porch after having a chocolate milk at Hunt’s. The kids sure were fighting.

Wed July 1 – My nightgown is so torn that I can’t turn on the light because Jr. R. might go blind with looking and on top of that Shan & Jean & I went to sleep on mom’s bed and I am still almost asleep. Dad took off with Thelma to C’ville.  Annette went too. I guess they got along all right. We bought a cake from the young handsome Omar man - chocolate and was it delicious with strawberry royal ice cream.

Thurs July 2 – We didn’t wake up till nearly noon then got Sugar to air our tires and discovered someone – possibly Jr. R. had swiped the letter I wrote Raymond. I ought to send him up. Spent all afternoon cleaning out the writing desk.  It sure was a job. Shan got supper, fried potatoes, peas & macaroni. Nearly pooped. Went with Thelma after eggs.

Fri July 3 – Cleaned up the house and rearranged the furniture. Expected mom to cork but strangely she didn’t say a word; however, I have a feeling thoughts were a different matter. Omar man came and Shan had to shell out and pay him. Why? Mom refused to. Thelma celebrated her birthday with a  dinner for her & Don Hayes. Got supper – cabbage, corn & mashed potatoes. Washed dishes.

Sat July 4 – Not such a dull day after all. Fried chicken in the woods over and open fire.  Fleece ? Vera, Grace, Leslie, Forrest, Leon & I went down to big rock and took our dinners. Was it de-lious.  Went wading and got my breeches wet until it looked like had an accident. Went with Vera to C’ville after Jelia ? when we got home. Worked from 5:30 – 10:30 – two customers.

Sun July 5 – Excitement is still abounding and Mom is still there. The elevator is nearly completely burned. I didn’t stay for all of it. Worked 6 ½ hrs today and Kate did to. Got along allright just working 2 hour hitches. Jr. R is still here and is about dead so he’s sleeping in our bed while we’re bunking on the floor. Our fire department didn’t make much showing.  Such a life.

Mon July 6 – Put the day in extremely well. It turned out to be pretty after the big storm last night.  Enola & I went to C’ville this afternoon. I went to see John Payne in To the Shores of Tripoli. Got Shan’s birthday present – pajamas. Ate supper at Elli’s Café, Then tonight we went to see Judy Conova in Sleepytime Gal.  Of course it’s no use to say it’s a real comedy.

Tues July 7 – Jr. R. is finally going home tonight I do believe. We slept until about ten all of us but Kate, then I made all of the beds and went over to Thelma’s about a dozen times. Helped Jr. R decorate his car. It sure looks beautiful. Got supper tonight nearly by myself.  It hurt me terribly to do it because Jr. R has been madder than 10 wet hens all evening.

Wed July 8 – Celebrated Shan’s 22nd birthday until July 9. Vera, Roy, Leon, Kate, Francis, Marlene (no clue who Francis & Marlene are)  & I went to Turkey Run and fried cheeseburgers then went to Rockville to the show, Vanishing Virginian.  Old fashioned show but I enjoyed it.  Stopped at Plainview Cabins & ate, makes me sick to think of the Washington tomorrow.

Thurs July 9 – I used to think Alva Good was backward but I changed my mind after today. Never had so much fun in my life. He tried to call widow Lizzie Nichols but she wasn’t home. Oh yes!! I done the washing this morning.  Five lines and the fancy full ?  Not bad for three people. Betty and I went riding this evening awhile. Not much else exciting.

Fri July 10 – Alva here again. More fun than ten circuses.  He talked to the Widow Davis and made a date for Sat. night. Thelma & Annette over. Jr. R & Bill Porter came over. He went with Big Rach. Alva entertained them by his dancing exhibitions. Kathryn Arvin & I went riding down to Wannies then last but not least walking.

Sat Jul 11 – Went up to the free show a little while just stayed for the comedy. Then went down to Noblitts and got a 10 c ice cream cone and 2 glasses of choc. Milk. Alva’s widow didn’t so he stepped out in front and sang, “It makes no Difference now.” Got a letter from Raymond. He has been sent to Wisconsin. Also wrote him and warned everyone – Hands off!

Sun July 12 – This day sure was a scorcher. Thought I’d completely melt this afternoon. Worked from 1-2 & 6-8 and turned in my social security blank. It will seem funny to get a check. Kate and Jr. went over after his old clothes so he can work for Ray.  I set the alarm for 4:30. That sure is early to get up but maybe I can make it. Then go after Dad.

Mon Jul 13 – I am writing this by candle light if you want to call it light. Ida & Mary Ellen came down and Ida and I went up to the Moores. They had to show us their home movies which we could hardly set through. We got up before the crack of dawn and went after Dad, in fact at 4:30. Got home at eight. I know of enjoyed it.  I certainly wish the lights would come on so I could see.

Tues Jul 14 – Now for a good nights sleep. Bob, Even & Anita Sheran came up and just now left. Bob had his car radio fixed. Shan & I took Anita down to Noblitts for ice cream and chocolate ilk.  Rode up the hill.  Will Birchfield.  Started Mill on the Floss today (a book).  It is so long, fine print & old fashioned that I doubt if I ever finish it.

Wed July 15 – Quite an exciting day – went to C’ville to take Dad to meet the train and just set in the car and read Mill on the Floss. Mom went to the ration board to see about tires but I doubt if we get any. Stopped at Uncle Bum’s.  Hap & Dorothy have a house now. Surprise. Last but not least we stopped at Enola’s. she had a letter from Jim. He’s back on shore.  The senor ate the sake ?

Thurs July 16 – Found out this a.m. that Mom hadn’t kept her promise about turning on the wash water, but after so long I started the job about ten and finished by noon.  Betty was over all afternoon and she washed my hair and I combed hers. Vera came down and Alva put on a performance by calling his widow and singing Got my Social Security Card.

Fri July 17 – Just made a good day of it beginning at 8:15 when I rode up to Enola’s. We then went to C’ville and I took her to the Dentist. If she doesn’t look and sound funny. Then we went to the show, The Lady is Willing. It was a scream and I do mean that.  Enola came down tonight and we slipped the wires on the sparks of Pete’s car. Mean? Not much.

Sat July 18 - Old nosey Lola Moore got us out of bed after we had a midnight serenade by Alva on the French harp.  Baked 4 blackberrie pies.  Decided to go down to Wannies this afternoon & didn’t tell Mom. She nearly had the police after me. Worked from 8-9 tonight. Hated to like __ but just about had to.  Shany, Jr R, Roy, Vera, Leon are going to Shaffer Lake tomorrow. I work.

Sun July 19 – I’m weary from honest toil to-night. Worked 10 hours today. Had an awful storm, which put both C’ville lines, Milligan and a few more out of order. Also the drops all were knocked by the lightning. I think Shan is mad because I mentioned Cliff Trinkle. She sure is touchy on that subject. It is storming now and I expect lights to go out.

Mon July 20 – Jr. R. went home this morning. I didn’t cry any either. I got supper while Alva was fixing the sink and then taxied Shan home 15 minutes late. Mom loaned Opal my bike so we didn’t go riding as planned. Alva stopped and we looked at the material in the book & decided  to have nearly everything reupholstered.

Tue July 21 – Oh dear! Such a day I got up and done the washing excuse me I mean ironing this morning. Got dinner then tried to decide whether to go to the circus or not all afternoon. Ended up by Olive, Mary C, Shan & I going to see The Male Animal. It was good but it didn’t sound good. Tried to get in without tickets. Also tore my dress.

Wed July 22 – Ruby Pearl and I are just about ready for bed at 9:00 p.m. Ate supper again after I came out here, I mean at Clemmies.  Fred brought up a bundle of paddles to make us be good little girls so I guess for the time being we will be very much.  Ruby P’s after m tickling, pinching, etc. This is all for now.

Thur July 23- You are Always in my Heart with Kay Francis, Gloria Warren was the show today. Clemmie , Ruby Pearl & I went although  I never gave the man my ticket.  We enjoyed it a lot. The sweetest looking negro winked at me. My heart went pitty pat. I think Ruby Pearl was jealous. We had fried chicken for supper. I ate 4 pieces. Ruby got lost uptown at C’ville.

Fri July 24 – Telephone woke me this morning and it was Artie saying Glenn was home for today from the Navy. Fred went after them and they came up for dinner. He was higher than a jack-o-lanters.  I drove him back to Waveland. Shan & Francis rode to the Shades this evening. Went up to Enola’s Sr. night and we went to visit Ruth Ann Stickler.

Sat July 25 – My vacation ended to night and I can truthfully say that I had a nice time. Kate & Jr. R. came after me but I didn’t come home with them because I had a lot more to do. Then tonight Raymond Kesner stopped for just a jiffy. I wonder if I can get up in the morning by 6:30.  I hope so.  Gave myself a manicure just now and it isn’t dry as yet.

Sun July 26 – Got up bright but not very early for a special reason. I went to Indpl with Enola and her folks. We ate dinner at her grandma’s then went to Riverside. Did we ever have fun. Took in all the rides, ate a pineapple whippe and etc even went through the crazy house. The tornado just about floored me.

Mon July 27 – To bed before dark at night but I made up for it this morning by getting up at four, making breakfast and getting over after Dad at 5:50 a.m. We watched the prisoners go in for breakfast. Layed down this afternoon but didn’t sleep any hardly. Done the washing this morning. It was a whopper. Worked an hour tonight so Shan could go this morning.

Tues July 28 – Is Mom ever on a rampage!  Shan had a date with Lyle Wilhite and Mom is just about to die because she is treating poor little J.R. so awful. Francis and I went riding tonight after Kenneth fixed the flat on the bicycle. We rode all over town, when we came home Mom was warpathing.  Dutch & I went riding too.

Wed July 29 – In the rush of staying at the telephone office this daily duty slipped my mind so I’ll make a few notes now. Took Dad to C’ville to the train and mom went to Uncle Nig’s and I went to the Vanity to see Syncopation. It would do in a light pinch but I can’t brag much on it. Jack Cooper had the lead. Saw Hap, May Hayes & Betty Webb.

Thurs July 30 – The only thing I did besides smother was ride out to the stone quarry with Shan.  We thought we seen a 70Q06 (?) truck. I also got up enough energy to make a chocolate pie. Shan and I have been laying out in the yard on a blanket. She went to sleep. Thelma & Annette canned 60 quarts of green beans.

Fri July 31 – I’ll have a black eye in the morning I bet. I run into the big black tea pot. Did I get mad. Shan & I went to C’ville and piddled around. Pushed Enola in Sticklers car went by Wabash Ave and went to Uncle Nig’s a little while. Seen Henry Fonda and Gene Tierny in Rings on her fingers. It was a scream. Mom loaned Marianna my bike while I was away.

August
Sat Aug 1 – Such a life!  It’s okay but I’m beginning to weaken. I wonder why Thelma, Dutch and Raymond were over most of this evening after I worked ed about the Waveland busy bodies and had a lot of fun. Jr. R never came up tonight and Shan is about to get hysterical. Shan & I went up to the free movies. Not much force.

Sun Aug 2 – Using psychology Jr. R. waited until a late hour and then came up. He certainly is a pain in the neck. Mom & Shan are back on tete’e’tete terms again and thicker than two bugs in a rug.  Couldn’t stand it any longer so I thought I’d go riding and Shan came along too.  Got a coke up at Sharps. I worked off & on all day making a 5-hr total. Had 2 telegrams.

Mon Aug 3 – I’m completely and absolutely petered out. Mom, Enola and I were in C’ville all afternoon and then stopped at Uncle Bum’s. We decided to call off the Morgan reunion. Then tonight Thelma, Shan & I rode out to the Shades on our bikes, stopped to rest several times and ate out there and also at Sharps. Alva & his wheel chair was in the paper.

Tues Aug 4 – Charley Huxhold died last night and upset our applecart. Indianapolis trip – postponed. We did get our permanents and visited Ollie & Romulus. Our hair looks so nice that it seems like a shame to go to bed. I guess there was a big crowd at Gilliland’s sale. When we got home from R’ville I got supper. Just now finished the dishes.

Wed Aug 5 – Waveland was all in arms this evening when Annette came home and found a drunk man in her bed. The sheriff finally came and got him about so long of a time.  It put a stop to the Rockville show business but after the excitement had subsided Thelma, Grace Harris, Imogene Moody & I went to C’ville drove around the town, talked to Sheriff Roth and had a milkshare at Producers.  John Handley?? !!!

Thurs Aug  6 – Worked again this afternoon with nothing very exciting happening. Shan hopped me about being rude to Jr. R> Poor baby! Buh! After work Thelma and I went riding then Thelma Hunt came by said they were shipping Raymond out. We then went over to the garage and got some chocolate milk, talked, laughed & giggled awhile.

Fri Aug 7 – Proved my bravery in the drunken Bill Woodcook episode last night but that’s past history. Bud Hankins was here awhile at noon and then we took Shan over to Jr. R’s on our way after Dad. Stopped at the BanTon ? and got a chicken dinner but it wasn’t very good if I must say so. Enola was here when I got home. We started wearing rings.

Sat Aug 8 – Slept disgracefully late this morning but made up for it this afternoon by working 6 ½ hrs while Mom and Dad went to Crawfordsville to see the big Victory Parade. It was tough but I finally made it. Went to get the potatoes on my bike and got a ct. of choc. Milk no less and Dad and I drank most of it just now.

Sun Aug 9 – Worked from 12 -5 and Betty stayed with me. She asked too many questions but was company anyway. Dessie (1st cousin to my Gpa) and some of them were down a little while. Betty went with us after over to take Dad back then we stopped at Greencastle and went to the double feature, About Face and All-American Co-Ed. They were both better than I thought they would be.

Mon Aug 10 – Put in the biggest part of the day working. I’m glad it’s my last day for awhile. I got off 2 hrs for supper and Mom was asleep so I went up to Enola’s. Norman took us a ride in his new car and I thought she was coming down here tonight, but couldn’t Shan and Leitha ? went to Ipls today. Shen brought me a new dress – red, white and blue.

Tues Aug 11 – Nearly wore myself out pedaling to Browns Valley against the wind. Then we went to Cville and seen Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in Pardon my Sarong.  Some show, some cast and some fun. Max Gephart rode home with us. Enola & I started riding home on our bike and Norman took pity on us and picked us up. Then Kate & use went to Nuckles, Noblitts talked to Helen and also Hester.

Wed Aug 12 – Haven’t had so much fun since grandma fell out of her casket.  Came to Ipls on the bus seen Tortilla Flat & Rio Grand Canyon with Gene Autry.  Came home on the streetcar and went to Riverside. Rented a bicycle build for two and felt like the freak in a side show. Ditched two soldiers & we unsuccessfully tried to ditch Tommy Clouser, Enola’s cousin but in the end rode home with him.

Thurs Aug 13 – Back home again after a swell two day vacation. The only trouble was that it was so short. However in a few more days I would have been financially embarrassed. Rode uptown on a street car after helping Enola write a letter to Russell!!?? Letter ?  Seen Mrs. Minierva. Nearly missed the bus. Had to standup in the bus.  Bill Sims died last night (this morning).

Fri Aug 14 – Enola & I slept terribly late then ate breakfast and then I took her home by that time it was time to go to work. Several renters came in but Mrs. E took care of them. Kate even got supper and worked while I ate. Thelma & I rode up to see Bill Sims then I stopped and talked to Thelma Hunt. Her foot is terribly sore.

Sat Aug 15 – Mom felt worse this morning so we spent a long time figuring how we could manage to take her to the Dr. Shan finally went in the afternoon while I worked. Jr. R. didn’t come and Shan thinks he must have had a wreck. It rained nearly all afternoon, it was high time. I don’t know if they’re having a show or not.

Sun Aug 16 – Well Jr. R. finally arrive safe but not so sound after his drunken spree last after cruising around the block several times. He took two boys to the Shakes and nearly died at sight of me in my red striped sweater. Worked 4 hrs and had a 22 word telegram WU to St. Louis Mo. Went down to Wannies this afternoon.

Mon Aug 17 – Betty got me up about 10 and then ate breakfast with me, hot rolls and coffee. Worked from 12-5 and nearly staved. Fried me a couple of hamburgers and drank a choc. Milk then went over to see Thelma Hunt.  My 15 minute allotted stay lengthened into 1 ½ hrs. Donald Wayne came home with me. Write Dad a letter.

Tues Aug 18 – If I’m not a dirty specimen to-night I don’t know anyone that is but why shouldn’t I be. Mom and I canned 21 qts of tomatoes and then I got around and done last weeks ironing in between times of gabbing; been over to Thelma O’Briens several times and also gabbed with Thelma Hunt awhile. Shan has written Reunion invitations for Mrs. Everham’s. Down to Wayne’s awhile.

Wed Aug 19 – No fooling all hell really did pop loose this morning when Mom done the washing. I tried to call Dad at 6:14. Spent practically all day gadding Mrs. Everham’s Vera’s Thelma O, Thelma Hunt and rode up to see Enola but she was gone so I visited Mrs. Deere, cooked beef & noodles for dinner. Jr. R came over to-night and I felt like screaming I wonder why.

Thurs Aug 20 – The big day has finally came. 17 at last!  Rode up to Enola’s on my bike and went with her to the dentist. Mom and Shan came by after us and went to see Private Buckaroo. I classed it as fair.  When we came home Jr & Steve were her I chased him all over town when he took my diary.  The blots on the page tell the results.

Fri Aug 21 – After I last wrote in this little book I have undergone several serious tests of patience.  First I don’t treat Jr. R. well enough then I treat him better and Shan accuses me of trying to get him. Then after I finally get to bed that boy set in here and talked until 2:30. Such a life. Went to meet Dad at the Y this evening.

Sat Aug 22 – Dad took off bright and early to Ipls to see about a guard job at the fairgrounds but found out it was a waterhaul.  Came home and went to bed with a headache.  I worked this afternoon for Helen. She loaned me a book High of Heart by Loring. It was really good. Just poured rain tonight and Dad got caught in it on the way home from town.

Sun Aug 23 – quite a day – went to the Smith Reunion at Fay’s. Had a good dinner and a wonderful time. Even Dad enjoyed himself. Jr. R and Bob came over last night. I went to take Dad back but when I got back they were still here. They left at 8 p.m. so Shan & I deleted and deducted & found they went to Shades. They stopped again at 12:30/ I had to entertain Bob till 2:30.  Sleepy? You can guess.

Mon Aug 24 – In bed again at 8:30. I slept till 10:30 this morning and again all afternoon and can hardly hold my eyes open now. Maude stopped a minute on her way to C’ville. She had her new teeth and was a lot thinner. Betty helped me get supper but left before we ate. Some of Sims’ were down to see the phone. G.R. (definitely says G.R. but probably J.R.) is due tonight I think.

Tues Aug 25 – Slept real late again this morning and am so tired of bed that I don’t want to go but the bed is so clean and inviting that I’m going. Shan and I cleaned up the house and moved the furniture. Mom covered the big red box. Ugh! Helped Thelma move her furniture he Vivian ? and baked a choc. pie over there. Read autograph books and washed our hair tonight.

Wed Aug 26 – Shan is now the possessor of ox blood oxfords. She can’t decide whether she likes them or not they’re so different. We took off for Cville this afternoon and seen of all people Donnie Mitchell.  He looks better than he used to. Wen tout to see Woody at Ruths new place. Nina has moved to an apartment.  Aunt Lorene was doing Dorothy & Hap’s laundry.

Thurs Aug 27 – Jr. came up this evening with enough cold medicine to cure ten cases of pneumonia. He thought school started tomorrow. I got supper for al of us. Then went over to Thelma’s. Her & L. Eddie were hooking rugs.  Ended the anxiety about the house by finding out that it isn’t sold for sure.

Fri Aug 28 – Kate is all swollen up with a big stye in the corner of her eye. I cooked dinner and even fried some hamburgers for supper. When I was over at Thelmas we seen a snub nosed semi truck without a trailer drive up so when I came to investigate it was no one but Mom’s beloved Bob Ramsey  or 98 in person.  He stayed til about 1.

Sat Aug 29 – Got dinner again to-day. It is getting to be a habit rather than an exception.  Worked from 7-11 tonight. Got out the bed and layed down then Shan came by to visit me awhile and Jr. R. went to the pool room. Told Helen that Maxine couldn’t stay and had her worried. It rained the show out and nearly everyone got wet.

Sun Aug 30 – Now I know how it feels to not have anyone come to let you off when they are supposed to. They were an hour – 5 mins late tonight.  I guess I only worked six hours. Mom went to the Barker Reunion at Lafayette. Jr. R. got breakfast and Shan got dinner. He gadded all evening and got mad about something Shan finally calmed him enough to go to the Shack ? in our car and they spent her money too.

Mon Aug 31 – I’ve cycled all day and I’m not very tired even yet. Betty, Ronald Wayne and I rode all afternoon and tonight Shan, Donald Wayne, Thelma and I rode to Milligan and got a coke then rode home with disastrous results. Thelma & I encountered a dog and she went whirling over the handlebars sprained her arm, ruined the new tire. Mad???!!

September
Tues Sept 1 – I feel like I could sleep indefinitely but I know I can’t because there is a lot of work to be done. Shan and I cycled up to Lewis’ sale about an hour, came home, ate, got out our winter clothes and washed them and even got on a dying spree. I dyed nearly everything on the place turquoise, navy, pink or scarlet. They sure look nice. Shan rode tonight.

Wed Sept 2 – I thought the day of work was done after I washed dishes and helped Mom. Thelma, I & Annette snaped our green beans but Uncle Nig called that some of them were coming down tomorrow so we got busy and canned the 50 qts of beans, cleaned up the house, partially got dinner and finally am dragging to bed at 1 a.m.

Thurs Sept 3 – It seems like about a week ago that I was so glad because school was out but today we started in the grove. Ruth brought Uncle Nig  Aunt Stella, Nina, June, Woody, Jerry down for dinner. We had an excellent dinner and then everyone left. Us girls to the Shades. Donald Wayne and I rode to Browns Valley for a choc. Milk.

Fri Sept 4 – Spent the whole day gadding around. Took Jeff to Cville bright and early this morning. Shan got her eyes tested and Mom and us got into a quarrel over school clothes. I finally got one dress.  Came home and went to G’castle. Got a dress, shirt, skirts & sweater. Went on over after Dad. Congratulated Woody on his approaching marriage. Thelma Hunt came awhile. She still has bruises. Shan & I fixed Rose & Doris’ hair.

Sat Sept 5 – Spent the morning putting away yesterday’s purchases and getting books together. Then we all went to C’ville. I met Thelma and Donald Wayne and we went to see Irene Dunn in Lady in a Jam. Earl Barker dropped in tonight but it didn’t put Mom back in bed. She liked him better than she used to. Jr. R. isn’t coming here to school.

Sun Sept 6 – Everything happens and also everyone comes at once. As if Jr. and Dad weren’t enough for the weekend, along about 1 am. Here comes Nina, June, their boy friends and also Buddy Beck to stay all night. Such a time. Didn’t work any at all. Shan & Jr. went with Mildred & Leland to Rockville, Montezuma, Clinton, etc. I went with dad aback.  Talked to Nurse Betty & Bobby Bowers and seen blood hounds.

Mon Sept 7 – Hectic day!  I hated to start back to school and the new teachers are worse than I expected, especially the shorthand one. Rained today to add gloom to an already dreary day. The taillight was on and we couldn’t get it off so Shan & I (red striped PJs) took it over to Hunt’s. Bill nearly laughed himself to death.

Tues Sept 8 – I have a feeling that school is going to be very very tough this year, short hand especially. Most of the kids that were absent yesterday were here to-day. Doris June had four bracelets on one arm. We had pancakes for supper then Thelma, Eddie and I went riding. Thelma Hunt stopped awhile too.

Wed Sept 9 – Things went along fairly smooth at school today. I took the school news down for Hallett and pointed out the various kids to Mr. Davis, the new coach. Shan and Helen put in their bids at the shirt factory.  Thelma worked while they were gone. Things will really happen if the brass find out. Helen came down and we had to push her car.

Thurs Sept 10 – I’m about bogged under in history – a theme, short reading material and questions and all for one day. Fale ? stopped and looked at Shan’s bike but I don’t think they’ll trade. Shan and Helen gave notice to Mrs. Everham. She is about to go nuts trying to find someone Helen came down and talked awhile.

Fri Sept 11 – 32 weeks minus one is the remainder of my sentence. I don’t know if Jean sticks it out or not. Mrs. Everham blowed clear up today about the girls quitting. They went with Thelma to C”ville and put in their app at the bottle cap factory. I went over and visited Thelma Hunt tonight when I got home Ver ? and Frank were here, then T& Helen (something in shorthand and it’s been way too long since I took it to read it) (maybe letter).  Jr. Breezed in about 9:30 or 10:00.

Sat Sept 12 – Telephone woke me up this morning about nine thirty. Enola wanted me to go to C’ville with her this afternoon so I went up and went with them. She got her new tooth and looks a lot better. Shan and Jr. R. are in a big jamboree. He went with Ora Lee and some of the boys on a big drunk.  I wish he would just stop coming and be done with it.  Not sure that’s what it says – kbz

Sun Sept 13 – Jr. R. was here this morning when we got (doesn’t say got what).  His bender only lasted until three o’clock and he spent the remainder of the night on our front porch. I worked from 1:20 to 6:20.  Washed my hair and Shan penned it up. To night we’ve been talking about all the exciting things that ever happened in or around Waveland (oh my I wish they were listed here)

Mon Sept 14 – The only thing that pulled me through the heat to-day was the thought of the ice cream that was to come later. We took off at five thirty up to Ida’s and had a church supper with all the trimmings and ice cream for dessert. We had a very nice time but Richard Lee had to act naughty and nearly pester me to death. We got home at eleven.

Tues Sept 15 – Shan aroused me around seven this morning. I hated to get up but it’s a half (sic) to case.  Jean Shaffer came to visit school and Shorthand is as complicated as ever. We signed the Smith Studio up to take our pictures. Shan & Mom went to C’ville this p.m. Came home from school, went over & got a chocolate milk and then went down to Wannie’s to study brief forms.

Wed Sep 16 – Have had callers nearly all day. Mary, Thelma, Annette, Ida & Richard Lee have been here off and on all day. Francis came down a minute and he and Shan and I rode her home on our cycles. We even fried hamburgers and drank cokes for supper.  Nearly set up and waited for the mysterious lady.

Thurs Sept 17 – Quite a contrast from our health test was an evening of very much gayety. Enola came down after school and we bicycled, got an ice cream at Knuckles.  I even nearly rode clear up the town hill.  To-night Kathryn, Enola, Norman and I went to see Judy Conova & Jerry Collana in True to the Army.  Was it ever good. I laughed continually and never enjoyed myself so much.

Fri Sept 18 – Two weeks of my jail term is served. Had a test in history and a 100 word spelling test. Started after dad at 5:30. Met him at the Y. Shan & I nearly run off with two very good looking hitch-hikers. Cooked supper for us two but three ate and barely had enough to go around.

Sat Sept 19 – Made up for getting up early the first part of the week and slept late. We all went to C’ville not much money and less business. Talked to Marianne a good (while) and ate and bought candy. Vera was here when we got home. She says Roy is going to see Billy tomorrow. Built fire, I mean dad did and I washed my hair.

Sun Sept 20 – This has been a terribly long (day) for me, although we’ve really done more than usual. Slept late and when we got up we had rolls and strong coffee then I went with Shan to comb Doris Grimes’ hair. Had a good dinner. Noodles in main (?).  Worked from 1-4. Went with Mom and Shan to take Dad home. Jr. didn’t come up this weekend. Set by kitchen fire tonight.

Mon Sept 21 – Got the verdict on my first test of the year which happened to be Health. I made 94. Mom got the impressions for her teeth made. I’ll be glad when she gets them. Went up and watched Martha trying to work awhile and came home when Enola and her mother came. I am now ready to go to bed and Jeanne & Shan are asleep.  I do hate to bother him.

Tues Sept 22 – I forgot to mention yesterday that we had a silent talkie at school. The Tuttle Tugger.  I had to work tonight because everyone else went to the show. When I came home from work I was so tired & sleepy I was ready to pile into bed but I had to write a theme. Frankie came to work at eight. It’s after ten now & Shan is home.  She seen Mrs. Minniver.

Wed Sept 23 – They had company all day here at home and after I started working supper for Shan at 8, here came Thelma & Dutch. I fixed some macroni, tomatoes and peas together.  Helen & Maxine came just as they were leaving. Shan & ___ are going to take the laundry job for awhile. When they left Jr. R. came, finally got to bed.

Thus Sept 24 – Jr. stayed all night and Jeanne slept with us. Got my grade in short hand the lowest in the class. Am I proud of myself.  Cooked pork cutlets, mashed potatoes, gravy, coffee and left overs for Shan & my supper. Worked on my shorthand and washed Shan’s hair. Shan & Helen & Helen Handley went to the Casket Co and thought they might get a job. Water hosed (?) Last fitting for Mom’s teeth.

Fri Sept 25 – We got our pictures taken today. Everyone had to out in front and we nearly froze to death. Shan took off to Jr. R this afternoon.  My health book finally came, after three weeks. Sat Sept 26 – The temperature is still below comfortable and tonight it started raining. I worked agin from 5;30. Hershbergs called me and asked about tomorrows wedding. Mary had a couple of serious fits and came over. Shan got her birth certificate and Dad got a call to DuPont. Hes going down there Monday I think

Sun Sept 27 – The big church wedding was fancy looking at least.  Big white bridal gowns, bridemaids and even ushers. Mar y went to the hospital and Betty went to work with with (sic) to watch the wedding. Shan & Dad got home about seven. Shan was about sick and Dad said for her not to work at the laundry. I have been frying bacon sandwiches for me & Shan.  Jean ate ice cream.

Mon Sept 28 – Back in the groove at school again. Ruth Reddish fainted in shorthand. Mom & Shan went with dad to Newport to see about a job at the powder plant.  Enola came down & ate dinner with me. Worked from 6-8 & Shan had supper when I got home. Then I studied awhile & joined everyone else over at Thelma’s. Went to bed fairly early.

Tues Sept 29 – Ruth fainted in our class meeting this morning and nearly did several other times. She finally went home. Shan & Martha went cycling this afternoon while I was at school. Went over to Thelmas when I came home. She gave me 2 necklaces, 12 bracelets, a pin & eye shadow. Came home and burning ten o’clock oil studying.

Wed Sept 30 – If I don’t start giving my body time for repairing tissues I am going to be so groggy that I can’t stay awake in Health class. Wouldn’t that be something.  Tried to skate a little and then went to work at 6 & stayed till 8. Shan had me a hamburger when I got home.  I’ve been getting shorthand & earning hours ? of body ever since.

October

Thurs Oct 1 – The skating fad has gripped us all. Shan, Betty, Eddie and I have been trying to master the art. Eddie is the only one that has been seated ? yet. Mon Oct 5 – I’ve thought about Shan all day. She called this evening to tell us that she has landed a job in the payroll dept. at the Malleble Steel Co. I’m glad she got the job but I’m sure going to miss her.  Made some ice cream when I got home from jail & worked from 5:30 to 8. Mrs. Woods came in & I soft-soaped her. Thelma & Eddie here tonight. Wrote Shan a letter.

Tues Oct 6 – It is still lonesome without Shan but I got along better attended school of course and had to mail a bunch of postals for Davis (she must be working in the office or at least trusted enough by Cliff Davis, the principal to help). Fri Oct 9 – One more week of school to my credit. It will be Christmas in no time. Worked from 5:30 – 8:00 and made two government men wait45 minutes on a call.  Thelma came over about 9:00 and stayed until after 11. We have the history and domestic trouths ? of hers and Hubert’s married life completely.  My eyes don’t want to stay open any longer so I guess I’ll go to bed.

Sat Oct 10 – I feel like I’m one step closer to me tonight.  I stayed in bed too long and got a crick in my neck add that to heavy cold, too much activity and what have you got.  Took a not ? while trying to skate,, then Betty & I went walking down the railroad. Got home & Thelma & Donald Wayne, Betty & I went riding.  Thelma (& I) is getting typed for blood for a transfusion.

Sun Oct 11 – I have a feeling that I have done something I shouldn’t have tonight. I sat up until midnight to finish “Murder at Coney Island.” It was very interesting. Wed Oct 14 – I’ve done nothing set today and my is getting sore (sic – I’ve done nothing but sit today and my rump is getting sore basically). I did make some ice cream after school.  To night I tried to get my shorthand but Jeanie got in the road so bad that it was almost impossible. Get out 20 lbs of sugar with stamp no. 8.  I forgot it was raining and I rode to school with Thelma.

Thurs Oct 15 – We took dictation in shorthand to-day.  I only made one error. Even tried my long, unusual fingers at typing. Worked from 5:30 – 8:00.  Everyone and his dog came in to pay their rent and long distance calls stacked up on me. Cheese, Mr. Lindley’s colored valet, came in to call New Albany.  He sure wanted to talk. Thelma was here again to-night.

Fri Oct 16 – The Seniors are out of the class tourney. Bested by the Sophomores. If that isn’t the limit. We went after Dad as soon as I got home from school. Mom and Dad went to C’ville this afternoon and I stayed home and washed the dishes and mopped the floor. Shan called from C’ville but they had already started home.  Worked from 5:30 to 8:00. Nothing new here.

Sun Oct  18 – Well, we’re by ourselves again to-night. Our family has all took off again. Kate went back with Russell’s and dad took off about an hour later. Hubert and Twinkle were here awhile. Worked from 4-7:30 this evening. Got along without any fights with the customers for once.

Mon Oct 19 – We had another show this morning. It was really tiresome. Couldn’t even sleep for the noise. Our proofs came today. Mine are fairly good but they look too much like me to very satisfactory. Worked from 5:30 – 8. Talked to Patti and had a few interesting calls. Enola was here when I got home. She wrote letters & I read the play. Some fun.

Tues Oct 20 – I feel like a cowboy after riding to the Shades and back for a weiner roast. We did have fun but oh me I’m tired. Kathryn, Enola and I went. Got home at 8:15. Kate called while we were gone. I think she is homesick.  Miss Cox sure was crabby the last period. I would give almost anything if they would fire her.

Wed Oct 21 – Enola and I left school after 5th period and went to C’ville with her Mother than to Ipls with Helen Douglas, the lady she is going to visit. Ate supper at her trailer and then they took me on down to Kate’s. They had about given me up coming. Shan & I went down to the drug store after a coke and then walked down to Chrystal’s.

Thurs Oct 22 – Some people aren’t bothered with racket while others are trying to sleep, but I slept only about half the time. Went with the Russell family out to Chrystal’s. Ralph cut their hair and we run out a lot – gob of clothes by hand. Shan & I did something grand in our opinion, we took a trolly up town. Seen Making Whoopee on stage and also Atlantic Convoy. Got home about ten but home.

Fri Oct 23 – I’m “back home again,” and what a day I’ve had. Enola & I went out to her grandmas on the streetcar & trolly. Stayed awhile & came back to town. I nearly passed away when a big handsome copper swinging a mammoth billy club came after me, but he merely wanted me to go after the matron in the restroom.  Set with Cobut (?) coming home. Dad is here.

Sat Oct 24 – Such a day! For the part it has been spent in talking about my “gossip has it,” heart throb, Cecil Hunt.  According to local gossip, quite a romance is in the making. Thelma Hunt was over all afternoon laughing about it. Poor Cecil. I think they are about to tease him to death. I worked from 5:30 – 8:00.  Nothing interesting happened. Mm thinks she has the mice annihilated. I hope she’s right.

Sun Oct 25 – Back at the old grind again. Work, eat, sleep. Worked from -12 and 4-7:30. Deloris was there a little while. Cooked some macaroni with the peas and tomatoes for dinner. Also had fried potatoes & Mrs. E. even brought me in some fresh & hot toll house cookies. Wrote Dad & Kate both letters tonight. Dad called this morning. Bed at 9:30.

Mon Oct 26 – One more day marked up towards the end of school. Came home and baked some toll house cookies such as they were and cooked some beef, made noodles, mashed potatoes and had myself a good supper. Mom wouldn’t eat with me. I tried to get my shorthand with Mom dictating but she went too fast and Jeanie got in the road. Mom read my health book tonight.

Tues Oct 27 – It is long since past my bedtime but that is a small matter – maybe. I worked from 5:30 – 8 and Enola went to play practice. After she got back, I got my lessons and she wrote letters.  Then I spelled and dictated the message while she wrote to Pete. Had a very tough test in Health.

Wed Oct 28 -- History test in the morning and I have not even looked at my lesson.  Mom and I had a big family tonight. Thelma and Annette went to Covington and left Dickie and Eddie here. Donald Wayne came too for good measure. They had a good time but they nearly ate us out of house and home. Thelma O’Brian was here and then Thelma Hunt came.

Thurs Oct 29 – I missed yesterday and got the dates mixed up tonight so the pages are backwards. Enola came down and went to play practice. I went over to Thelma Hunt’s while she was gone. Went up town and got a Sundae after we all got home.  Jesse Collins and some lady was up here wanted bottled cokes. Got alittlas bed. ??

Fri Oct 30 – Did we ever have a hard test in history. I’m still dizzy from the effects of it. Dad finally quit at the farm and came home. Shan called and Roy and Vera went to meet at C’ville. Set up late and Thelma got out of bed about eleven and came over to visit awhile. She stayed till about one.

Sat Oct 31 – Halloween is here and nearly gone with little or you might say no mischievousness being pulled.  Shan, Mom, Dad and I went to C’ville this afternoon. She bought a new raincoat, two new pairs of slacks, and a red shirt. It sure was funny to see Dad trailing Kate around trying to get her voted absent ballet.  She was nearly cussing.  Annette moved to Covington.

November

Sun Nov 1 – Slept rather late. The whole family ate breakfast together. Went over and sold one of Williard’s suits for Chrystal to Cecil Hunt. Had to laugh awhile over Harry’s tale. It gets funnier everyday. After a little family quarrel we took Shan over to Russels. Mom thought she seen a dead man by the road. I drove part of the way home. Dad looked at the engine.

Mon Nov 2 – Dad got out about four this morning and took off to DuPont to try to get a job. He did have a time. Got a paper bottle of milk and a sandwich for lunch and his bottle broke or something and spilled milk on his tie and shirt.  He took his physical, nine of them were stripped even to their socks, and a nurse came in the doctors office.   I wonder if she didn’t get a little bit shocked. I would have.

Tues Nov 3 – Election day passed with every little unusual excitement. Had a pep session after school.  Kathryn Marshall and Isabel Shanks are the new yell leaders.  Not so good but could be worse. First game of the season (basketball) is being played with N. Market tonight. Went to bed fairly early. Lucille was here awhile.

Wed Nov 4 – Mr. Davis went to take his physical for the army to-day. I hope he doesn’t pass but it’s a sure thing he will. Didn’t have a single class this afternoon and so set it out in the assembly. Got a report card. I’m very pleased of mine. Got 1 A & 3 Bs. Shorthand jumped from D to B. Went over to Thelma Hunts after wok. The kids were fighting. Had ice cream.  Friends ? moved ?

Thurs Nov 5 – Mr. Davis passed his examination.  I think nearly everyone hates to see him leave. Finally got our class pictures. It was about time. We listened to Liam ? and Abner.  The Aldrick family and Gabrial Heater. The war seems to be going our way more or less. Something is terribly wrong with the fountain pen I was using. I pen was the best one we had.

Fri Nov 6 – It won’t be very long until Christmas and then the rest of school will just whizz by – I hope. After school, dad and I ate enough walnuts to kill us. Then I fried some bacon and we had some cocoa for supper before I went to work.  Nearly had a fight over the phone with New Market. Went over to Thelmas but she wasn’t home so I bought some choc. Milk.

Sat Nov 7 – I’ve been over more road today than I have been for ages – not saying though. Dad and I went to C’ville this morning tended to our business and decided to go out to Aunt Pearls. She gave us a picture of Richard. Stayed for dinner & went back to town where we seen Enola & she said we were to go home. Dad & I then went over to Everett Machs. The lady chewed her gum. Mack & Rex talked & Dad & I listened.

Sun Nov 8 – When I got to work at eight this morning Harry was sitting there running the business with is fake teeth laying on the switch board.  I’ve put in 8 ½ hours altogether up there today. The war news looks good. The Germans are setting speed record on running in Egypt and the US is now invading Africa. I do hope we’re successful!

Mon Nov 9 – What a day and what a night!  I worked from 5:30 – 8:00. Weavers came over as Kathleen, Kathryn and I went to see Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire in Holliday Inn.   It was sure good.  We got about down to the Barcus Road and the ford chugged out.  Drowned. It really poured. Set there in the rain from 11:15 – 1:00 and some man pushed us for a start. The rest were worried.

Tues Nov 10 – I felt like I had arthritis in my legs all day. I guess it is just a hangover from last night. I didn’t sleep any at school though.  Went over and got us all a coke, that is, except Mom, at Hunts this evening after school. Harry was quite inquisitive but didn’t find out anything. Bill and Cecil both had a chance for a job in Chicago but aren’t going.

Wed Nov 11 – We had some more movies at school today in celebration of armistice day. After the orders for bonds and stamps were totaled today at school, there was $215.15 worth. Not bad for a start. I took my English over to Hunt’s to look up words and stayed until 9:30. She invited me over for Christmas dinner but I declined. Where did I learn that big word?

Thurs Nov 12 – Mr. Davis must be feeling tender-hearted. He gave us a relative easy health test. I worked from 5:30 – 8 again tonight. Got my check for last two weeks. Mrs. Isaacs and Richard Lee were here tonight. Mrs. Isaacs sure isn’t a very heavy talker. Richard Lee got kind of rowdy. The war seems to be going good for our side. Lets hope it continues to.

Fri Nov 13 – Every thing happens to us.  Today was Mr. Davis’s last day, so the team presented him with a present after school. I sure did hate to see him go. I went uptown after the groceries about bus time and intended to meet Shan. Talked to Virginia Huxhold for about an hour while I waited. The bus didn’t come. Mom went to wait but she didn’t come after all.

Sat Nov 14 – I took advantage of the day and slept until nearly nine. We went to C’ville in the afternoon. Mom bought me a new skirt and sweater.  The skirt is two miles too big. Dad and I went to see “The War against Mrs. Hadley.” It was rather good. Donald Wayne came over tonight. Read Powdersmoke Range. It sure was good.

Sun Nov 15 – I got up about noon, had breakfast and here came Kate and Jr. R. He brought us one of his graduating pictures.  Nothing very exciting happened. Tried to get some one to stay with Crystals kids. No luck. I don’t think Jr. went home with them. I suppose Ora Lee took him. Uncle Claude came down after they left. Quite a lot of topics were discussed such as John Dillinger.

Mon Nov 16 – I haven’t got a fountain pen here so I’ll just write with pencil. I nearly rebelled and walked out of class when old Milligan (Elton) came to take over our civics class. He is undoubtedly dumber than I am.  I worked from 6-8, then came home and Mom was over to West’s so I went over to Hunt’s. She was talking to me about Anna Lee Bowles calling and wanting Cecil to go with Opal Pattison.

Tues Nov 17 – I feel in rather excellent spirits after seeing My Gal Sal with Rita Hayworth and Victor Mature. Mom and Dad took Enola, Kathryn & I. They thought it was simply wonderful. It was good but Holliday Inn was better. Reffet took over our Health class, gave us a crossword puzzle to work. She is going to be better than old Milligan.

Wed Nov 18 – I’ve crossword puzzled at school and after I got home from work. I wrote to Shan and Fred each a short letter while I was working.  We got out at 2:30 because of the gasoline registration. I was well pleased. Mom is still talking about the show last night. She really liked it. We’ve eaten so many walnuts that I feel like a stuffed toad. Ruth Young had a baby.

Thurs Nov 19 – Gasoline rationing came in mighty handy this afternoon. They dismissed school at 11 so the teachers could work on the boards. Thelma O’Brian was here when we got out. Enola and I rode the cycles to Browns Valley. I went to C’ville to see Whispering Ghosts. I do love ghost shows. Came home with her dad. Had rabbit for supper. Left the cycles up there.

Fri Nov 20 – Another long school day has come and finally gone. I started “In the Doge,” but Donald Wayne came over. I drilled him on arithmetic and then we took a bike ride. We stopped at Wannie’s. Got a choc. Milk at Noblitts. Stopped with Donald Wayne at home. They have dismissed Harry.  I sure am glad. She showed me what she had gotten the kids for Xmas.

Sat Nov 21 – Took advantage of the day and slept a little later than usual. After I got my breakfast, I put on my old slacks and one of Dad’s old shirts and helped mom clean up the house. Donald Wayne was over again and I gave him some arithmetic problems again. Finished On the Dodge. It was good, I thought. Listened to radio tonight.

Sun Nov 22 – Put in the day working, eating and sleeping. Went to work at nine and stayed till a little after 12. They went to church and were a few minutes late. Slept most of the time (5 hrs) off. Went back at five and wrote Bernice, Kate and Raymond all letters got off at 7:12 p.m.  Got my health and English half way tonight. The temperatures freezing – zero nearly.

Mon Nov 23- I’m writing with Mom’s new pen, but personally I can’t say very much for it. After a big fight Mom and Dad took Kathryn, Enola and I to see John Payne, Betty Grable, Carmin Miranda and Ceasar Romero in “Springtime in the Rockies” Mom went crazy over it but I’m sure they weren’t nearly as good in this as it some others. I’ve seen them in. Stella Good went home Saturday.

Tues Nov 24 – The day to which all Seniors always enjoy came today. Our Senior pictures came. Mine were good but it seemed like a lot of money to spend on them. The teachers sort of raided me while I was working. Reffett and Rhodes came in to put in calls. Rhodes said I made 100 on the ret. Raised and life. ?  I went to Hunts after work. Donald Wayne is pretty sick. Gave them a picture. Enola came down from dresser and a little while (smudged)

Wed Nov 25- “Too many relatives” is now a thing of the past. I forgot that was the Junior Class play present tonight. Kathyn, Wannie and I went. It was pretty good. Talked to Olis a long while when I went after the milk. Beard was at the play. After I got home I read or partly read Gun Feud. It is nearly midnight now, so I’d better hit the hay.

Thurs Nov 26 – Thanksgiving Day has come and in an hour will be gone. I slept until about 10:30. Mom went up and got Enola. We played Chinese checkers (my aunt loved to play that even when I was a teenager), rum, and euchre (didn’t know she knew how to play that -  never played with us).  We went up and got some telephone directories and fixed them out with all the new names and changes.  Took her (Mom and I) home about nine. Got to talking and stayed for a good while. Got home at 11. Now for bed.

Fri Nov 27 – Not much doing to-day. I walked up and paid the light bill and then worked from 5:30 – 8:00. Shan came home on the bus. We have been gabbing until it’s nearly 11. Jean got up then and got in bed with his mother and father. He got up and run around with Dad while he was building the fire but got cold and went back to bed.

Sat Nov 28 – We all took off early to C’ville. Shan bought her two sweaters. Enola went with us down to Liters for a chicken dinner. It was pretty good. Went out to the hospital to see Helen. Talked to the Evernhams, went up to see the baby or babies, I should say. I took Shan up  in the elevator. To night we went down to see Mary Shular and up to Vera’s at Moores. Shan got a jacket-sweater combination.

Sun Nov 29 – Kate went back to work today. I wish she was at home. Aunt Dorie got a lot worse and Kate called Ralph but they didn’t come. She went home with Uncle Everett when he took Grandma to Coatsville. Uncle Claude came down. I worked from 5-7:30. Most of the lines were down. Had an awful time. Mrs. Evernham brought me two hot cookies.

Mon Nov 30 – I’m burning midnight electricity tonight. It is all my own fault though.  After I got home from work, I read Challenges of the North, then had to halfway get my history. Dad went up to Allisons this morning. Didn’t find out much but he got to see Shan. I paid the grocery bill and milk bill tonight. Oh yes. Got a letter from Bernice.

December

Tues Dec 1-  Tomorrow we have our health gest and our history cartoons, but I am prepared for neither. I bought a lot of chocolates when I went up town. Bet I gain five pounds. Thelma stopped a little while this evening and tonight instead of getting my lessons I went over there. Donald Wayne cried because he couldn’t come home with me after a funny book.

Wed Dec 2 – Report cards came out this evening. I made 4 B’s. Not so good. Mr. Milligan wasn’t at school after dinner for some reason or other, as we just sit in the assembly 3 periods straight. Leslie got to come home because mother was sick but instead of staying with her he came to visit school. Donald Wayne came over after school and stayed until dark. I helped him get his lessons. Packed my lunch.

Thurs Dec 3 – I’ve written my letters for English and also my talk on Madame Curie (note: I remember her showing me this paper many times – she was quite proud of it – who knows what happened to it, though).  Dad got up at four again this am. And went to Allisons for an interview. He took his physical, got finger-printed and his picture taken. I think he is practicaly hired. I took him lunch today for the first time in about three years. Enola got a letter from Jimmy. He heard Hap and Dorthy had split up.

Fri Dec 4- I’ve stayed up until 12:15 a.m. anyway reading. I must Ride Alone so I guess a few more minutes will make no difference. I worked from 5:30 to 8. Not much exciting at that place. The telephone rang at 9:15. I answered and it was for Western Union for Dad, telling him to report for work at his convenience at Allison’s. I guess that means we go to C’ville in the a.m. after a copy of it.

Sat Dec 5 – I went to see Henry Fonda in Magnificent Dope while Dad loafed around town. It was snowing when we started home and the roads were terrible, snowy and slick. We had an unexpected guest. Raymond Usner ? came over. He has a 10 day furlough. Donald Wayne came over a little while, too. Arlan shoveled the snow off the sidewalk.

Sun Dec 6 – Aunt Dorie McCloud (I think this is an in-general aunt not a family aunt) died last night. It seems like a bad time to go because there is about a foot of snow on. I worked from 9-12 and 5-8 today. Kate called and Twinkle came down. Jeanne is up on the writing desk looking at the clock. I got out an old jigsaw puzzle and have been working on it when not working.

Mon Dec 7 – Enola and I decided to go to Mrs. McClouds funeral so we came home before any of the classes at noon.  Ralph, Marie & family were there of course. After she was buried we went to Browns Valley on the school bus. Popped corn and got supper. Went up to Mrs. Deeres on the sled and called Dad to see how he got along at work the first day. We observed Pearl Harbor Day by saluting flags at 11:55 a.m.

Tues Dec 8 – One year ago today, we declared war on Japan the dirty rats. They are getting what is coming to them and then some. My fountain pen finally came. I sure get rouped ? I worked on the jigsaw puzzle again. Dad has to wash copper at his new job. He likes it but is awfully tired. Talked to Thelma Hunt a minute on the way to town.

Wed Dec 9 – We got our individual pictures today and are mine hideous.  Raymond came over this evening and helped work the jigsaw puzzle then after he went back Thelma and Donald Wayne came over. They sure are funny.  Got a letter from Fred and one from Kate today.  Enola forgot her lunch and came down for dinner.  Leslie Allen went back to the army this a.m.

Thurs Dec 10 – For a change, we had a fairly good movie at school. It was a Joe E. Brown picture. While I worked this evening I wrote Aunt Pearl. Thelma Obrian and wrote Fred when I came home. Mom wrote him ten pages so we had to send them separately.  I fell down in the post office and did I ever feel silly. Dad was completely exhausted after work. Bought Jean some dog food.

Fri Dec 11 – Another week of school can be crossed out. Just two weeks until Christmas. It’s hardly seems possible. Donald Wayne came over awhile. We wrapped my Christmas gifts and then went over to wrap some of his. Thelma was washing. Quite a job. Had a pep session after school bus we played Russellville so I don’t imagine it helped much. Got a letter from Aunt Lela and a post card from Dessa.

Sat Dec 12 – Spent most of the day cleaning up the kitchen. It sure was a gomb.  I worked from 5:30 to 8:00. It was awfully slick going on the sidewalk, streets and anywhere. After I got home, Mom and I or rather I addressed Christmas cards. It is about going to break me up sending to everyone. The temperature is now only eight above zero. It’s really getting cold.

Sun Dec 13 – Another day of working. I worked from 9-2 and 4-8:15 (these were 5 minutes late). Nothing anyways near exciting happened. I slept during my four few hours this afternoon.  Mrs. E. & Bob took Harry to the hospital tonight. After work, I tried to get my English and shorthand but didn’t have much success, oh yes! I built the fires in the 2-0 zero weather this a.m.

Mon Dec 14 – Back to school again after a very brief 2-day weekend. Got the news broken and not very gently that we have to write a thousand word research theme. It is slightly warmer today than it has been for a good while. I worked from 5:30 – 8. Everyone was trying to call someone that didn’t have a phone. Mrs. McBrayer was calling for news and subscriptions. She gives me a pain.

Tues Dec 15 – More bad news at school. Reffett assigned me a talk in safety and we were informed that we have to take a physical Friday also bring a sample of urine. Last period Helen Sims, Eileen Short and I went down to the gym to prepare our Safety talk which we have to give together. Got tired of working so we got the balls, shot baskets in our stocking feet and have a “nosing race”. I have floor-burned knees.

Wed Dec 16 – After another day at school which included a progress test, I worked from 5:30 – 8. Mrs. Evernham was in most of the time and Helen came up and we drew names. Got home and Kate was here. She tried to surprise us. We ate a little, decorated the Christmas tree and zerked ? until nearly midnight. Jeannie boy performed awfully sweet. Took my lunch

Thurs Dec 17 – I washed my hair tonight and it is really flyey. Got a letter from Raymond. He got back. I talked to him awhile when I went after the milk and looked at pictures. Mom got her buffett this evening. It is her Christmas. We listed to Lum & Abner & Henry Aldrich on the radio. Shan got up at four and went with Dad and Sewell to C’ville to catch her bus.

Fri Dec 18 – One more week until Christmas!  After worrying and dreading our physical test for a week, they didn’t amount to anything. The first one at least. Enola, Uncle Lon, Aunt Pearl were here for dinner. Dad got paid. While I worked tonight I wrote letters to Kate, Aunt Lela and Aunt Ora. Donald Wayne came over ate supper with me.

Sat Dec 19 – Well – I went with Mom to do my Christmas shopping. She got me some house slippers and a bright red housecoat. I also shopped for the rest of my own gifts. Ate lunch with Enola or rather spent her lunch hour with her but didn’t eat. Talked to several people, including Claude Mitchell. Went over to Hunts and then to work.

Sun Dec 20 – I’m nearly dead of my feet. I built the fire, this morning and went to work at 9.  Worked until 12. Then slept all p.m. and went back at 5 and came home at 8. Made some snow ice cream and wrote my thousand word theme on Florence Nightingale, quite a job, too (saw this one too and she got an A on it and was quite proud. In fact, I think she talked me into doing something with Florence when I had to come up with an idea for a theme in English – since my one and only other relative, Aunt Alice Certain was a nurse, it was perfect).

Mon Dec 21 – Got our second semester schedule and I’m really going to be busy by the looks of it. It’s going to be plenty tough. Got a piacked marked, “Don’t open until Xmas from Thelma O’Brien. Kate also got one. It’s kind of curious. It’s only 9:13 but I’d better get to bed. Oh yes – worked from 5:30 to 8 again.

Tues Dec 22 – If Mr. Milligan continues to give us many more tests, I think I’ll faint. He gave us a current events semester test today without warning. Because it was so cold in the Health room, we didn’t have health. Talked to Mr. Hallett for a half hour after school. Signed up for Speech & Math of Aviation. I may wish I hadn’t. Worked from 5:30 – 8:00.

Wed Dec 23 – Just the usual round at school including a semester history test. Worked from 6:30 – 8 p.m. while Helen went to recover her lost purse. Enola came down for dinner. Went over and talked to Thelma and Bill awhile (until 10) after work. Then came home and was going to copy my theme but ran out of paper. Bob Ramsey (98) and Ollie Hester stopped tonight. (I think that’s what this says).

Thurs Dec 24 – Three periods of exams this morning and we were out. Enola and I went to Browns Valley in our ford and then to C’ville in Norman’s car. Rushed around all afternoon during last minute shopping. Ate supper at her house. Kate and Jr. came down on the bus. We opened our gifts about 8:30. I got a housecoat, shoes, stationary, bracelet & beads set, jergens ? set & nail set. Everyone had a Merry Xmas eve.

Fri Dec 25 – Celebrated Christmas twice. Kate, Jr & I went down to Grandpas with McClouds.  We had a time getting dinner. Everyone had a good time. Got home and Mom had us another chicken dinner fixed. Wasn’t very hungry but ate quite a lot. Guaranteed to go to Ipls with Ora here but didn’t, played euchre awhile. Shan & I played Jr & Mom.

Sat Dec 26 – I’ve loafed all day. I haven’t even dressed. Lucille & D. Wayne were here all afternoon. We worked the puzzle all afternoon. We played euchre all afternoon.  Early afternoon and tonight until they fixed the cards, got to giggling and I got disgusted. It made them mad but I quit anyway. Kate and Jr. Went down after an hour. Lucille probably thought it was awful.

Sun Dec 27 – I’m setting at Shanies new desk tonight. She and Jr went back on the 4:30 bus. It seems lonesome without them. We played euchre all afternoon. They got so they liked to play awfully well and were pretty good at it Christmas excitement is over and New Years is next. Maybe we can celebrate it.

Mon Dec 28 – If all my vacation days are this exciting I’ll certainly not have a very merry time. I started up to Enolas but she had company so I came back and stopped at Wannie’s. Stayed till about 4:30. D Wayne has been over nearly all day. We shot his 13-13 gun and played Chinese checkers I won every game.

Tues Dec 29 – I’m writing with my new quarter fountain pen. It’s really better than I expected. Mom went up to Mrs. Banta’s this afternoon. I washed dishes, mopped the floor, and helped D. Wayne and Betty work a jig saw puzzle while she was gone. Worked from 5:30 – 8. Got a dollar from the telephone co. (she doesn’t say why but assume for Christmas)  wrote to Thelma O, Burnice, Raymond, Aunt Mattie (wife of her uncle, Courtney Morgan). Talked to Thelma at garage awhile.

Wed Dec 30 – D. Wayne and Betty were over to work puzzles again this morning. Mom and I went to Cville this afternoon. She went to the Dr. and I seen Smith from Minnesota.  It wasn’t very good. Miss Raffett rode home with us. She had two suitcases, a big box and several other packages. Talked to Enola on the phone tonight.

Thurs Dec 31 – Well here I am! I’ve seen five shows but I don’t remember what they were. Enola and I came up to Ipls on the bus, ate dinner at her grandma’s. Tonight Kate, Jr. and I went uptown to the midnight show and other one. The midnight one was really funny. The Streetcar driver called some man a big ape. Have had a very good time on the last day of 1942. Home at 2:30.

… In the back is a Memoranda – she writes:
Remember all of the swell times we had in 1941, well shows, state fair and a few midnight walks.
“1942” – English Lit – McClain – Typing II – Beard – History – US – Hallett – Bookeeping – Beard – Remember Pearl Harbor – Dec 7, 1941. Remember how I hated to see Mr. Davis go to the army. Remember getting stranded in the rain.
Then there is shorthand at the end that says: (well, no one seems to know because we all learned Gregg and no one thinks this is the Gregg Shorthand system – what it is I guess will likely remain a mystery ☹ )
Since have discovered the top word is: CODE – the rest – a symbol for each letter of the alphabet 😊
