BOWLING, Joseph or BOLLING or BOLLZ, Martha, W25257, BLW #91514-160-55. Per "Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files" pg 343: Joseph Bolling or Bowling died Jan. 30, 1836 in Orange Co., IN. Buried in Jackson Twp. He was a soldier in the Virginia Line. Served as private in Capt. Valentine Peyton's company, Col. Wm. Heth's 2nd Virginia regiment. Was in the battle of Monmouth in which he was wounded and continued in service until June 18, 1780, at which time he was discharged at Philadelphia, having served three years. In 1820 he made affidavit concerning his service in Crawford Co., IN. He was allowed pension on his application executed July 22, 1826, at which time he resided in Orange Co., IN. He was then age 73, date and place of birth not shown. He married in spring of 1818 in Madison Co., KY to Martha Williams. He had been married previously, name of that wife not stated. Martha Bowling or Bolling, soldier's widow, was allowed pension July 13, 1852 in Green Co., IN. She was age 70-75. Names of only two children are shown, Sally and WIlliam. In 1858 when Martha made application forf pension, she lived with the family of her dauaghter, Sally, wife of Enoch Stone of Greene Co., IN. In 1850 the son, William Bolling lived in Jackson Two, Orange Co., IN, age 40. James Belcher, son-in-law of Joseph Bowling, lived in Orange Co. in 1858. (Note: Sarah (Bolling) and Enoch Stone are my gr. gr. grandparents. Martha & Joseph's marriage date could be 1815 as Madison Co. KY marriages shows:"Joseph Bolding to Patsy Williams, bond date 19 May 1815." The surname has been spelled various ways: Bolen, Bowling, Bolling. Submitted by Joanne Lehman   See also SAR Memorial

NICHOLS, Joshua; (1758-1841); was one of the earliest settlers of Orange County. According to his pension record he was born in Rowan Co., NC on July 10, 1758. Service: A private in the company of his father, Capt. NICHOLS, Rowan Co., Militia, commanded by General RUTHERFORD. Was with a detachment under General ASHE in battle of Brier Creek, where Gen. ASHE was defeated. Later served 6 months under his father. Enlisted as a private under Capt. Wm. ALEXANDER, Col. Wm. POLK's NC Regt. In battles of Orangeburg, Eutaw Springs. He enlisted twice in Rowan County and once in Mecklenburg Co., being discharged 3 times. Joshua lived in NC about 50 years, moved to Rutherford Co., Tenn. thence to Knox Co. (now Orange) Ind. in 1810, where he was living when his pension was issued in Nov. 1833. Died September 7, 1841 in Orange Co. IN. Children: Martin, Jacob, Thomas.  See also SAR Memorial

ABEL, William; Served as a private in the Company commanded by Captain William Evans in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Stephen Copeland of the Tennessee Militia from 28 January 1814 to 10 May 1814. He missed the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (27 March 1814) because of the measles.   He was born 27 Nov. 1786 and died 14 March 1863. He was buried in Miller Cemetery in Northwest Township of Orange Co., Indiana (For more information see Find A Grave Memorial# 132600123).

(Reference: National Archives WC 23598 William Faulkner Pension & Bounty Land Warrant file). William was born 7 March 1793 Green Co. Ky, married 18 Nov 1818 Orange Co. Ind to Anna Harned, and died 18 Nov 1858 Orange Co. with burial in the Harned Family Cemetery. William resided in Orange Co from about 1818 to 1826, and then again from about 1842 until his death.
FRENCH, George Hedges; from "U. S. Adj. General, Muster, Pay & Receipt Rolls of Indiana Territory Volunteers or Militia, War of 1812," vol. 2: pp. 437, 438, 439: George French Sgt. entered 21 Jan 1813 to 19 Feb 1813 - payroll 30 days $11.36 Capt. Zachariah Lindley Co., 5th Reg. Ind. Militia - he signed with an x that he received $11. Mary (Polly) French applied for bounty land - claim #22780 & #88235 - as his widow. She applied 4 Dec 1855 & was denied. They said she did not prove his death. She applied again 22 March 1859 & died soon afterward; he is listed under the French family cemetery; George Hedges French (1 Oct 1784-28 June 1847) was b. in KY. He married 8 June 1809 in Louisville, Jefferson Co, KY, Mary Robbins (ca 1790-ca 1860), who was b. in VA.

GUTHRIE, William, Moved to Stampers Creek Township in Orange County. He married Elizabeth Rigney in Orange County in Jan 9, 1823.Appears in the list of 1812 pensioners. Pertinent numbers are SO 8161 and SC 12268 Bounty Land warrant SO 10562 160 50. He served in Capt Ephraim Brown's Co Ohio Militia from Apr 25, 1812 to Apr 24, 1813 and was captured after the surrender of Detroit.

WORRELL, Robert; Pvt., Capt Wm.Ellis 1st Rifle Reg.Kentucky Militia; at an engagement on the River Raisin hid in a tree top from the Indians, and the night being bitter cold, had his feet so badly frozen that he lost all his toes and rendered him a cripple throught life. This old hero immigrated to Orange County with his family at a very early period aand settled on Lost River, where he and his wife died in the year 1830. (buried Worrell Cemetery)

From Goodspeed's History of Orange County, p. 508: "As early as 1813, while the present Orange County was attached to Washington County, Zachariah Lindley and John McVey were Captains of militia companies. In 1817 the Thirteenth Regiment, Indiana Militia, was organized in Orange County...After [five or six years] the militia organizations can not be traced."

He enlisted in Greenville, Floyd county Indiana. The 1860 census shows he and his family living in Northeast Township, Orange county Indiana, with a post office listing as Leipsic Indiana. Subsequent to this, he moved to Illinois, then Missouri.

BENNETT, Wily Milton, US Army Corporal. Son of William and Elizabeth Bennett, Born November 25, 1882. Entered service about 1908 in England. Served with American army in the Philippines until 1909, and the British Army in India until the beginning of the World War. Killed in British trenches in France, date unknown.

Clarence Jacob Busick was the second born of six children of Henry Sherman Busick and Alice Jane Smith. Clarence Jacob Busick was born November 14, 1891 in Orange Co., IN and never married.. All his siblings were also born in Orange Co., IN. Clarence Jacob Busick's paternal grandparents were William Squire Busick b. 1822 in Orange Co., IN and Sarah Jane Riley b. 1836 in Indiana. His maternal grandparents were Jacob Austin Smith b. Jul 12, 1836 Orange co., IN and Perlina Jane Barnett b. Jan 5, 1835 in Indiana.

He graduated from French Lick High School in 1915. He was the son of Samuel Ellis and Sarah "Linnie" Harbison. His siblings were Mary (Ellis) York and Dessie "Dessie" (Ellis) Bloom.He is buried in Fort Rosecrans Cemetery on Point Loma, in San Diego, CA, next to his wife, Joyce Minor. After the war, he moved to Los Angeles County,CA, and worked as an engineer with the gas utility until his retirement with death not long after.

He died 3 May 1965 at New Albany, Floyd Co, IN; buried at Mathers Chapel Cemetery, English, Indiana. Married 10 Jun 1920 at New Albany, IN to Margery Estella AUSTIN, daughter of Thomas Sherman and Annie Estella BLEVINS AUSTIN of English, Crawford Co., Indiana. Two daughters, Doris Virginia who married the late Gray Austin WHITESIDE and had 7 children; and Elizabeth Nadine, who married the late Guido HAMMOND and had 2 children. Earl joined the AEF on 25 Jun 1918 until 13 Jun 1919. Saw combat at the Battle of the Meuse Argonne in northern France. Last assigned to Company I of the 319th Infantry before returning to Indiana in 1919. Member of the DAV English Chapter 94 and charter member of Crawford County Barracks #462, member of the Army-Navy Union USA and member of the 80th Division Veterans Assn.

"Calvin Harold “Hoover” Agan was born in West Baden on November 4, 1924. Inducted into the Navy in July 1943, he completed boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Station and then went on to submarine school in New London, CT. Hoover was a plank-owner of the USS Segundo (SS398), making all five of the submarine’s WW II Pacific patrols and earning three battle stars. The Segundo registered seventeen kills and captured one of Japan’s two I-400 submarines operating at the end of the war. The Segundo was one of twelve US submarines participating in the formal Japanese Surrender Ceremony in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. Discharged from the Navy in May 1946, Hoover came home to the West Baden where he and Jewell operated a family grocery store for forty years until they retired. NUSSEAR, Lawrence Roscoe; US Army, Field Artillery Corps, Born January 17, 1898, Orange County, Indiana. Son of John Henry and Ada Limeberry Nussear. Died February 3, 1943. He was aboard the USAT Dorchester when it was torpedoed in the North Atlantic Ocean on its way to Greenland. Lawrence was lost at sea. There is a military marker for him at Stamper's Creek Cemetery. The Dorchester also carried the "Four Chaplains" who lost their lives while giving comfort to the soldiers. Of the 902 aboard, only 230 survived. For many years there was the Chapel of the Four Chaplains on the grounds of Temple University. The Chapel is being relocated to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. It is still a very active organization.
