ENTERED SERVICE ON 23 JANUARY 1941 AT LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. BOOT CAMP TRAINING AT GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS. REPORTED ABOARD THE USS BROOKLYN CL-40 16 MAY 1941. ASSIGNED TO CONVOY ESCORT DUTY ON TRANS-ATLANTIC CROSSINGS. OCTOBER 1942 SHORE BOMBARDMENT FOR OPERATION TORCH INVASION OF NORTH AFRICA. SHIP WAS HIT BY COASTAL GUN FIRE DAMAGED TWO GUN AND WOUNDED FIVE CREWMAN. JULY 1943 ENTERED THE MEDITERRANEAN FOR INVASION OF SICILY, ANZIO, NETTUNO AND SOUTHERN FRANCE. EARNED FOUR BATTLE STARS FOR THESE OPERATIONS. RATING OF GUNNER'S MATE SECOND CLASS PETTY OFFICER.
