ACTIVITY DURING WWII
ENLISTED ON 8 SEPTEMBER 1936 AT LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. SERVED ON THE USS INGRAHAM DD-444 DESTROYER DIVISION 26, A GLEAVES CLASS DESTROYER WITH THE ATLANTIC FLEET. COMMENCED CONVOY DUTY DECEMBER 1941 BETWEEN ICELAND AND UNITED KINGDOM. NIGHT OF 22 AUGUST 1942 WAS INVESTIGATING A COLLISION IN CONVOY AT-22 BETWEEN THE USS BUCK DD-420 AND A MERCHANT VESSEL. THE INGRAHAM HIT THE OIL TANKER USS CHEMUNG AO-30 IN HEAVY FOG OFF THE COAST OF NOVA SCOTIA AND SANK ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, DEPTH CHARGES IN HER STERN EXPLODED. HE WAS DECLARED MISSING IN ACTION OR BURIED AT SEA ON 23 AUGUST 1943. MEMORIALIZED AT EAST COAST MEMORIAL NEW YORK, NEW YORK. RATING OF FIRE CONTROLMAN FIRST CLASS PETTY OFFICER.
