Joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. Transferred to the US Army Air Corps in 1942 as a Captain. June 1945 while serving with the 315th Bomb Wing on Guam flew 22 combat missions in a B-29 "stratofortress" over Japan. 0n October 9 1957 while Commander of 321st Bomb Wing 447th Bomb Squadron at Pinecastle Air Force Base, Florida flying DB-47B-35-BW "stratojet" number 51-2177A it suffered a wing failure. He was able to maneuvered the aircraft to avoid damage and loss of lives to the city of Orlando, Florida killing him and his crew October 9, 1957. The air base was renamed for him on 7 May 1958 McCoy Air Force Base. His awards include Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star and the Air Medal.He is Buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
