ENLISTED ON 22 APRIL 1938 AT
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. REPORTED ABOARD THE USS BOISE CL-47, A BROOKLYN CLASS
LIGHT CRUISER, ON 12 AUGUST 1938 IN THE PACIFIC FLEET. 8 DECEMBER 1941 OFF THE
COAST OF CEBU IN THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS. 9 JANUARY 1942 ASSIGNED TO TASK FORCE 5
IN NORTHERN AUSTRALIAN WATERS. 21 JANUARY 1942 STRUCK AN UNCHARTED SHOAL AND
RETURNED TO MARE ISLAND SHIPYARD, CALIFORNIA. RETURNED TO THE PACIFIC ON 5
AUGUST 1942 OPERATING 750 MILES EAST OF TOKYO, JAPAN RAIDING SAMPAN PATROL
LINES. 12 OCTOBER 1942 BATTLE OF CAPE ESPERANCE, THE SHIP WAS HIT FROM JAPANESE
SHIPS BETWEEN TURRETS 1 AND 2 IN THE 6 INCH SHELL MAGAZINE SEVERALLY DAMAGING
THE SHIP AND LOSS OF PERSONNEL. RETURNED TO PHILADELPHIA NAVY YARD FOR REPAIRS
AND UPDATE OF EQUIPMENT. 23 MAY 1943 ASSIGNED TO THE COMMISSIONING CREW OF THE
USS NEW JERSEY BB-62, AN IOWA CLASS FAST BATTLESHIP. RETIRED WITH THE RANK OF
CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER 4.
