ACTIVITY DURING WWII
ENLISTED ON 6 APRIL 1938 AT
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. 26 MAY 1941 REPORTED ABOARD THE USS CANOPUS AS-9, A
SUBMARINE TENDER HOME PORTED IN THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS. 9 APRIL 1942 SHIP WAS
ORDERED SCUTTLED IN DEEP WATER AT MARIVELES BAY, BATAAN. CREW WAS EVACUATED TO
CORREGIDOR TO SERVE WITH THE MARINES ON BEACH DEFENSES. NEARLY ALL WERE CAPTURED
AT THE FALL OF CORREGIDOR. WAS A PRISONER OF WAR HELD IN THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS,
THEN MOVED CAMP CHIKKO 34-135 OSAKA, JAPAN WORKING AS A STEVEDORE AT THE PORT OF
OSAKA. WAS IMPRISONED FOR 3 YEARS AND 6 MONTHS FROM 5 MAY 1942 TO 12 OCTOBER
1945. RETIRED WITH THE RATING OF BOATSWAIN'S MATE CHIEF PETTY OFFICER.
