ENLISTED ON 16 OCTOBER 1942 AT LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. SERVED ON THE USS CHICKADEE (AM-59), A MINESWEEPER. ON 4 MAY 1943 SAILED FROM NORFOLK, VIRGINIA TO CASABLANCA, MOROCCO ON CONVOY AND ANTISUBMARINE DUTY ALONG THE COAST OF AFRICA AND INTO THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA. RETURNED TO NORFOLK, VIRGINIA AND ESCORT DUTY TO ICELAND AND INTO THE CARIBBEAN SEA. SAILED FOR EUROPE ARRIVING AT NORMANDY, 5 JUNE 1944. CONTINUED OPERATION IN THEATER UNTIL SEPTEMBER 1945. RATING OF GUNNER'S MATE FIRST CLASS PETTY OFFICER.
