KEYS, Evart - Waveland Independent Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana Oct 25, 1945 Soldier News: Evart KEYS, left Monday morning for Camp Atterbury for induction into the army. Cpl. James R. MOODY, B29 gunner returned to Waveland this week after 18 months in the Pacific. He has been stationed on Salphine from where he participated in several missions against Japan.

KING, William Henry -- Born 1-23-1925 died 12-31-1971 (buried Oak Hill Cemetery) as a result of fighting a fire at the partially-abandoned Crawford Hotel. Son of Herb and Ruth (Hinkle) King. Had training at the Lucian Islands; then Ft. Polk, LA; Ft. Dix, NJ readying for the Battle of the Bulge which at that point was over, then sent to Panama. He was a Military Policeman. His son Dave (thanks, buddy for stopping by - great to see you) said, he went from hot to cold; to hot to cold. He returned to his hometown (raised on the Mt. Zion road) and fathered two great boys, Dave and John with wife, Joan (Jenkins). We were lucky to have them for two of our son's Scout leaders. Bill was Captain in the local Fire Dept., when a blaze was delibertly started in Room 426, an outside room on the NW corner of the hotel. There were 40 people at the hotel and all were evacuated. It was New Years Eve celebrants who started the blaze. Bill also owned the WHK Motor Repair at his residence. He was a Mason and Scoutmaster of Troop 361.

"Decorated" US Army 2 December 1944 Indianapolis News - - love ya' Doc -- not only a great physician, but good friend and humanitarian.  Dr. Kirtley wrote an autobiography that is full of his experiences, pictures, remembrances. Probably the first physician that recognized me as a person vs. a patient, although I was one of his, I admired this man immensely. His major experience in the war was landing on Normandy Beach on D-Day and tending to troups in many European battles. A bronze star, European Theater Ribbon and other medals donned his uniform but his air was that of a humintarian. In Crawfordsville, he was a beloved doctor, politician and enjoyed working in the historical aspects of the community. Proceeds from his book go to the Courthouse tower project.

KNOX, Delbert - thanks to his son from the Ladoga FB page for this tribute - Delbert served in France, Germany, Iceland and was in charge of Diplomatic Relations - his son Delbert noted: "Ernest Hemingway gave his boots to my dad, because dad's had so many holes in the toes."

OAKLEY, James -- -- Raised in Ladoga, and a graduate of LHS, Oakley served in the Coat Guard from July 1942 to January 1946. Patrolling the California and Maryland coasts for awhile, in July 1943 he departed Norfolk VA in July 1943 aboard a LST ship (Large, Slow Target as Oakly joked) which arrived in Calcutta, India Thanksgiving day that year. While unloading, Japanese planes flew over bombing their decks. Other unfamiliar sounds were Burmese elephants and lions. From there, he headed to Bizerte, Africa, then England in February of 44. Additional gun mounts were added in Londonderry, Ireland and off they headed to Normandy, France for D-Day. Stopping on the Isle of Weight they picked up Canadians and semi-trucks only the Canadians didn't know how to drive the trucks, so a guy from Ohio loaded them. Assigned to an LCVP which was a personnel carrier that transferred troops from a large ship to the beach, he spent ten days getting little sleep and eating K-rations, a 5# can of Span and some crackers. --Voices of Victory. After the war, Dad, Mom and I went west to settle in Southern Nevada. I was born in Indianapolis while Dad was away in the South Pacific. Thanks for all the work you do in making available family history information of our ancestors in Montgomery County. I am most recently grateful for the obituaries that you are typing and making available on the website. I have found over 30 of my direct line ancestors. A grateful descendant of Montgomery County, Richard Patton "Willard "Pat" Patton served in World War 11 in the Army Air Force. He served 20 months in the South Pacific as an aerial engineer on a C-46 Commando transport. Operations in which he participated included dropping supplies and transporting troops to advanced positions. SWANSON, (Mrs. Robert)

SWICK, Raymond - "Bud" could easily have a movie made from his life during the WWII era. After enlisting in the Army Air Corps, he survived a plane crash, dodged, the enemy and their bullets, made friends with Dutch folks who basically helped him survive. A radio operator/gunner on a B-24, Swick was bombed with his fellas, by 8 German fighter planes. The plane exploded. He along with others were blown out, others killed. Luckily, he safely landed as his parachte worked just fine. When he awoke from being blacked-out several Dutch people were there to see him. Grabbing him by the arm, a 17-year-old boy, Arie Dyk, showed him that Germans were looking for him. He was shuffled from barns the homes and anywhere the Germans were not. He donned coveralls and wooden shoes and the Dutch were wonderful to him. At one time, he was hiding in an upstairs while a German commander stayed downstairs. Swick could see a nearby school from his window that had been turned into a military barracks. Canadians liberated him. The government gave him a Purple Heart even though he was not wounded, since he was basically Missing in Action, then declared dead. Thus, the PH. He also received the Memorial Cross from Dutch Queen Wilhelmina. (Source: Voice of Victory. Crawfordsville Journal Review, 1995).
