LETTER FROM DONALD LOUGH TO Mrs. Charles Marshall

Source: "Darlington Herald," Library newsletter by John Dale, Fall 2017

The following letter from S Sgt. Donald Lough was received Tuesday by Mrs. Charles Marshall: Dear Mrs Marshall: Well at last I am in Germany and the people are not any too happy about it. Ha. We have to fight them all now. Those SS troops should all be killed for some of the things they have done to the French and Belgium people. I was in Belgium for 12 days and the people sure were good to us. A German gave me a pen and pencil and also a watch - however I had a gun in his back. Ha. They have shot at me several times, however, they haven't hit yet. We have been moving very fast and they sure keep me busy. Our company got a Presidential Citation for good fighting on the road to Cherbourg. Yes we were in Cherbourg and many other towns. There is just one more city that I want to get into and that is Berlin, and we are not far from there now. It is dark so I must sign off and look for a place to park tonight.... As ever, S Sgt. Donald B. Lough
