George Russell McCormick, 78, a Waynetown are farmer died at 3:15 p.m. Friday in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Mr. McCormick was a decorated WWII veteran. He served as a navigator on 25 bombing missions and helped transport fuel to China, Burma and India theaters. He received the Air Force Medal with Bronze Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross with Bronze Star. He was a first lieutenant. Mr. McCormick was a member of the Waynetown Baptist Church, where he served as trustee and deacon and the Waynetown Masonic Lodge. He was a graduate of Alamo HS. He was born March 3, 1920 in Montgomery County, a son of James Clyde and Isa Michael McCormick. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Pierce on Feb 28 1942. She survives. Also surviving are four sons: Rodney of Crawfordsville; Russell of Auburn and Tom and Randy, both of Waynetown; a daughter, Mrs. Ann Anderson of Waynetown; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a niece; and a nephew. He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Shoemaker Funeral Home, 202 S. Indiana 25, Waynetown with the Rev. Ron Raffingnome officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home 4-8 p.m. today.
