SPENCER, Margaret - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

Margaret C. SPENCER, daughter of Wilbur Spencer has arrived in England to serve the armed forces as an American Red Cross hospital staff. Before her overseas assignment, Miss Spencer served with the Red Cross disaster staff in the Illinois-Missouri flood operations of 1943. Previously, she was acting editor of the Indiana Historical Society and was a junior visitor for the Indiana State Unemployment Relief Commission. She is a graduate of Butler University.

Local readers were doubtless thrilled to see mention in the Indianapolis Star magazine Sept 22 of the splendid educational and welfare efforts being performed by former area residents at a home and school in Alaska. Margaret LEE, former Margaret SPENCER of Waveland and her husband, Donn have been operating the home near Seward, Alaska, since early 1953. Founded in 1890, the Home's main purpose for existence is to care for homeless children who came from all parts of Alaska. If the Home has acquired a distinctive "Hoosier" atmosphere, it isn't wholly due to chance. Margaret knew where to get the kind of good, dependable help such an organization needed and she turned unhesitatingly to her Hoosier friends back home. Mentioned in the article are such Indianans as: Virginia Search, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Search of Waveland. Lynn Spencer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Spencer of Greene Twp, and Mrs. Lynn Spencer, the former Mary Ella Porter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Porter, also of Greene Twp. Shirley Crutchfield, daughter of Mrs. Victoria Crutchfield, former Waveland residents and a graduate of the Waveland High School. The article is built around Margaret Spencer Lee, for the most part, because it was her childhood dream to go to Alaska, a dream which she finally realized in 1948. She married Donna Lee, a Californian, during the school year of 1949-50 when she was teaching in the Seward HS. Margaret is a sister to George Spencer of Russellville.
