Elmer E. Elmore, chief commissary steward who has just returned from 17 months of services in the Southwest Pacific left for San Francisco Calif, Thursday afternoon, following a 30-day furlough spent here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Elmore, 608 E. Main Street, in South Bend with his sister and in Maine with his wife. He was accompanied to San Francisco by Mrs. Elmore. They visited with his sister, Mrs. William Mitchell, in South Bend, while en route here from Maine, where Mrs. Elmore's folks live. Elmore, who was a cook in civilian life in Chicago before joining up with the armed forces, has been attached to the amphibious transfer forces in the SW Pacific. Prior to being shipped overseas he was attached to the Navy base in charge of Gulf Patrol when the action in that area was at its peak. He witnessed many invasions in the SW Pacific theater since the battle of the Coral Sea. Besides being responsible for the entire commissary battle station he served as one of the pointers on anti-aircraft guns. 37 years of age, Elmore enlisted two years ago in the US Coast Guard. -- kbz
