Six area men joined-up with the 249th Combat Engineers on July 10, 1943 and were able to stay together during the war. Max, along with George Covinin; Benton Runyon; Carl Jones; Jac McKay; Wayne Anderson and Gene Merrell (see his entry). They served in England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Max earned four battle stars, and the battalion was citged in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army for action in Ardennes. He was discharged and headed home in late November of 1945.

Max Augustus Devitt was born 20 August 1923 in Crawfordsville the son of Charles Devitt and Blanche Holland at 11 in the morning by Dr. A.L. Loop. He was the 3rd of 3 children. He married Dora McCoy on the 7th day of September in 1948. Dora worked for us at the A&W for many years as a cook and we loved her dearly.

They raised five children right here in Crawfordsville: Terri; Donna; Dave; Dennis and Peggy. Before Dora's death, they spent more than 65 years trogether and were active in the Eagles and St. Bernard's Church.
