WAYNETOWN GOLD STARS (WWII)

Source: Crawfordsville Journal Review September 1944 ?

Waynetown, Ind - Five of the seven Waynetown service men who have given their lives for their country in WWII were former employees of the Boldt Milling Company. They are:

Pvt. Ernest M. Boldt, died Nov 20, 1942 at Orlando Air Base, Orlando, Fla

Cpl. Forrest Rex Swank, killed in action in the Southwest Pacific, Nov 13, 1943. Technically, Cpl. Swank "beloned" to Crawfordsville, residing there when he entered service. However, Waynetown "claims" him because he was a native, a graduate of the local HS and a member of Church of Christ where a star for him is on the church service flag.

Cpl. Henry J. Wood (sic - this is Wilbur J. Wood), Jr. drowned Tampa Fla on April 3, 1944 at MacDill Field.

Pfc. Robert L. Cord, killed in action Aug 3, 1944 in France.

Pfc. Gwendolyn McKee, killed in action Aug 30, 1944.

Waynetown, Sept 12 - Pfc. Gwendolyn McKee, 32, husband of Mrs. Maxine Graves McKee, who was killed in action in France Aug 23, was born at Veedersburg, April 9, 1912, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ransom McKee. He spent his boyhood in Veedersburg and Steam Corner. In 1924, the family moved to the Stanfield farm south of Waynetown where Pfc. McKee resided until he enlisted in the army. He began his service with the armed forces March 5, 1942, and was sent to France in July 1944, after serving in Wales and ENgland since Oct 9, 1943. Training in this country was at Camp Livingston, LA, Camp Gordon Johnston, Fla and Camp Pickett, Va. Pfc. McKee was a graduate of the Waynetown HS, and a member of the school basketball team two years. The widow, and the parents reside on the Stanfield farm, south of here.
