MAXWELL - Raymond - Bronze Star

Source: "Darlington Herald," Library newsletter by John Dale, Fall 2017

Capt. Raymond B. Maxwell of Darlington recently was awarded the Bronze Star medal for heroic service on Luzon. He led his company in an 8 mile march over mountainous terrain, through rocky gorges and almost impenetrable bamboo thickets. Five enemy outpost groups were encountered during the advance, but all were eliminated and 40 of the enemy killed. Troops occupying the main defensive position were completely surprised by the rapid advance of Capt. Maxwell's troops which resulted in the killing of 12 more Japanese and the capture of two machine guns. There was no casualty in his company.
