Crawfordsville First Baptist Church

Four Generations of Buildings, drawn by Mary Early Johnson

A view of the 1893 Building, possibly from a newpaper cliping.

Part of the early History:
-- on Sunday, July 11, 1915, a "House Raising Day" was held - to "assist us in making this the greatest and best day in the history of this church." The reason for the day was to build a much needed church edifice. The Trustees were: G.W. Deere; W.L. Hunt and A.P. Morris, with pastor Barney Antrobus
The following information can be found at Crawfordsville Public Library:  See the program here. The group of men in this picture may be those who worked on the edifice above - thanks to CDPL for these pics. This is a drawing of the current church which is on the Lebanon Road (drawn by Mary Early Johnson, CDPL librarian) - I assume the drawing of the various First Baptist Churches was also drawn by MEJ too. The church had a radio program for several years with ministry and singing.

Ambrose Whitlock laid the town of Crawfordsville out and every other lot was given to the county. W. P. Ramey was the county agent and he sold these lots as he could, the commissioners instructing him to part with no lot for less than $10. The county gave the lot now occupied by the municipal light plant to the Baptist Church and the lot where the First M. E. Church now stands to the Methodist Church.

Rev. Chelsea J. Stockwell will be the guest speaker in two weeks of meetings being conducted nightly except Saturday at 7:30 o’clock November 17 through December 1 at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Stockwell, who is well known for his hymn compositions and evangelistic song leading has been in the ministry for more than 20 years.  He has been associated in the past as song leader for some of the most successful evangelists across the country. Rev. Stockwell and his family are residents of Waveland, Indiana and are in fellowship with the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches. In two weeks of meetings which he conducted here two years ago, there were many decisions and additions to the church membership. The church has planned a good music program for every service. The members will include solos, duets, trios and a newly formed instrumental ensemble. The public is invited to all services, the pastor said today.
