YOUNG WOMAN AT BICKNELL TAKES HER LIFE

Viola Decorcy Wills Drinks Carbolic Acid with Fatal Results -- Had Sued Her Husband for Divorce and Case Was Set for Trial -- Third Case In that City Recently.

Bicknell, Ind., January 13 -- News of the third death or attempted death by carbolic acid swept through the city last night at nine o'clock, and a little mroe than an hour later Viola DeCourcey Wills was lying dead in her father's home at 315 East Fifth street.

She drank the poison at 8:30 and died at 10:15, after lying unconscious for an hour and three quarters. She apparently suffered no pain, and efforts of Dr. Smith with a stomach pump and alcohol were unavailing. The length of time that she lived was a revelation to many who believed that death from carbolic acid poisoning was always immediate.

The melancholy girl had performed two acts preparatory to her death. She had gone into her mother's bedroom and written a note on the new tablet. Then she had turned out the light and taken from her trunk a new and very pretty nightgown of blu suesen [sic] silk which she put on. The note was found in the bed.

It was short and asked that her funeral be "strictly private," and told them to repay a woman fifty cents that had been advanced to her on some sewing. She had bought some material only yesterday to use on the garment. The letter spoke of her act as being unavoidable, but had no explanation of her act. It closing with love from their daughter, Viola.

Viola was married on June 4, 1919, to Bishop A. Wills, of Flint, Michigan, a printer. During July she went to Flint to live with him, but stayed only a few weeks and returned August 13 to Bicknell. On the next to the last day of the old year she brought suit in the Knox county court for divorce, alleging that her husband admitted his association with other women. The case was to have come into court March 20.

Viola leaves a father and mother, sisters Nola Irvine, and Lois DeCourcey at Linton, and brothers Dave, James at Harrin, Ill., and Elmer.

The funeral is to be private and will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock at the home. The body will then be take to Linton where it will be buried beside her two brothers.
