DAFFRON, John Wesley
Source: unknown

born Jan. 7, 1846 died Dec 20, 1863

John was only 16 when he enrolled in the Union Army in Vincennes on Sept. 3, 1862, but he gave his age as 18 and mustered in as a private in Captain Lewis' 80th Reg't, Indiana Inf, Co. I. On the 8th of Sept. the Regiment moved to Indianapolis, where it was armed, and at once proceeded to Covington, KY, then threatened by the invading forces of the rebel General Kirby Smith. After remaining there a few days, the regiment was transported to Louisville, where it joined the army of General Buell, then being reorganized to march against Bragg. On the 1st of Oct., it moved from Louisville on this campaign. On the 8th it participated in the battle of Chaplin Hill, or Perryville. In this engagement, fought just one month after the 80th left its camp of rendezvous, the regiment bore a conspicuous part, losing, in killed and wounded, one hundred and fifty men and officers. During this battle, John lost his gun and equipment and was sick in Columbia. After Bragg had been driven out of Kentucky, the regiment remained in that state doing guard duty, and engaging in two expeditions against John Morgan's raiding cavalry. On Jan. 1, 1863, John was taken prisoner but later paroled, by John Morgan. In May of 1863, John rejoined his company. On the 18th of August, the 80th left Kentucky with General Burnside's army, and marched across the Cumberland Mountains into East Tennessee, occupying Kingston and Knoxville during the first week of Sept. and partook part in the engagement of Mossy Creek. On Nov. 10th John was taken to the hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he died of dropsy.

note: A story handed down relates that John went away to war and never came back.

FOURTH DEATH IN FAMILY

Raymond DeLisle Passed Away Tuesday at His Home On Busseron Street -- Word Received Here of Death of Miss Clara Honer -- Other Deaths.

For the fourth time in less than two weeks, the grim messenger, death, entered the DeLisle home shortly afternoon [sic] on Tuesday, when Raymond DeLisle, aged twenty-five years, of 1141 Busseron street, passed away after several weeks illness of influenza, followed by pneumonia.

The death of young DeLisle is especially sad, as just one week before, almost to the exact minute, his young wife, Mrs. Elsie DeLisle, passed away, and just a few days previous to the death of the mother, their infant child died. Just 18 hours previous to the death of Raymond DeLisle, his aged grand mother [sic], Mrs. Anna Messell died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John DeLisle.

Raymond DeLisle was taken with influenza about two weeks ago, and at the time of the death of his wife, he had contracted pneumonia and his life was despaired of. Later, however, it was thought that the crisis had passed and that he would recover, but he took a relapse, and continued to grow worse, until 12:14 p m Tuesday when he passed peacefully to rest.

The deceased was aged twentyfive-five [sic] years. He was a member of the local council of the Knights of Columbus and was a popular and energetic young man. For a number of years he was employed at the Frank Bratton grocery at Fifth and Main street, later taking a position as driver for the Churngold company.

He is survived by two children, Howard, aged four years and Adelia Marie, aged two years, also by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. DeLisle, of 1203 Broadway street, three brothers, Ollie DeLisle, the well known Main street haberdasher; Edward and Eugene, all of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Marceline Lenahan, of this city, and Mrs. Florence Beal, of Kansas.

Arrangements for the funeral have not as yet been definitely made, but it is thought the funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning from the Old Cathedral, of which the deceased had been a lifelong member.
