Young Mother, Delerious [sic] With Influenza, Then Runs Out Into the Night and Travels Four Miles In Almost Zero Weather Before She Begged to Be Admitted to Farm House [sic] -- Feet are Frozen.

A piteous tale is told at Freelandville of how the influenza has shattered another home over there, between Carlisle and Pleasantville says the Bicknell News.

In the home of Alva Shake, he and his young wife and a six months old boy baby lie sick of influenza. All ill, but the baby and father were very, very seriously sick. Mrs. Shake’s father and mother are a Mr. Hildebrandt and his wife, and after recovering from the influenza themselves, they came to the Shake home to help care for their daughter and her family.

Last Saturday night at midnight, young Mrs. Shake arose from her bed and in her night clothes went to give the baby some medicine. Suddenly she returned screaming that the baby had strangled to death on the medicine. The husband was so ill and weak that he could not raise his head, but the grandfather and grandmother both ran to the baby's bed.

It was true; the baby was dead.

As they were weeping over the little body the husband called from his bed, asking where his wife was. She had run into the kitchen. The grandfather and grandmother looked into the kitchen, but the wife was not there. They searched the house, but she could not be found. They searched the yard and barn, and did not find her. Then a hue and cry was raised, and neighbors came and a wide search was made; but it was fruitless.

The reader will remember how bitterly cold it was Saturday night, growing colder each moment as the night waned.

At three o’clock in the morning, with the thermometer standing just above zero, a knock came at a door four miles from the home of the Shakes, and a voice outside cried, “Let me in, let me in. I'm freezing to death.”

Going to the door they found a distracted and half frozen woman. Somewhere she had gotten into water and her garments were frozen stiff to her waist. Her feet were frozen and her mind was a blank. Quickly they kindled a warm fire. Then failing to learn her name, or getting only part of it, they sent out the report that a young mother had been found. The report came to those searching, and she was taken home.

Arriving at the door of her home she shrieked her refusal to go back into the house where lay the baby she had strangled to death. It was all three men could do to carry her into the house.

Since that time the young woman has been under the influence of opiates. It appeared today that her mind was clearing some and that she might live through her terrible night’s exposure and experience without physical reaction despite having the influenza.

Without the presence of the father or knowledge of the mother, the little boy was buried yesterday. The condition of the father is very critical.

As though this were not enough to fill to overflowing the cup of grief of the parents, they received word yesterday that another daughter, formerly Miss Hildebrandt, but now Mrs. Sam French, was dying from double pneumonia. At childbirth about six weeks ago, Mrs. French lost her mind, and has since been in a hospital at Indianapolis. No hope is entertained for her recovery.

Such things as these teach others how light are the burdens of sorrows they bear.

J. J. SKELTON DIES ON TRAIN

Bicknell Man Taken Off Passenger Train at Danville, Ill. -- His Wife Was Killed By Train October 18th.

Bicknell, Ind., February 4 -- A long distance telephone call came shortly after six o’clock last night to Lawyer James A. Jones from an undertaker in Danville, Illinois, telling him that the body of John F. [sic] Skelton, Sr., had been taken from a passenger train at Danville.

Immediately after getting the call Mr. Jones started out in search of Mr. Skelton’s sons, John and Tommy. He found them and by 8 o’clock they were ready to take the night train for Vincennes to go after their father's body. After Mr. Jones notified the boys, they received a telegram through the railroad department informing them of their father's death. At the time of his death Mr. Skelton had with him valuable papers, liberty bonds and money.

Mr. Skelton was 66 years old, and was one of the men of the city who is held in high esteem by all. A recent severe shock and sorrow came to him in the tragic death of his wife, Mrs. Anna Skelton, who threw herself in the path of the night train on the night of October 18th, three months ago. Since that time he had been living with his nephew, Robert McEwin. A week ago Monday he went to Oskaloosa, Iowa, to visit a brother and it is believed that due to illness he was trying to get home. He had been suffering with asthma and bronchitis, and his sons believe that they were the cause of his sudden death on the train.

The body will be brought back to Bicknell first and later will be taken to Philipsburg, Pa., for burial.

CRUSHED BY FARM TRACTOR

Machine Turned Backward Somersault Pinning Von Snider to Ground and Crushing Him to Death.

(Special to Vincennes Commercial.)

Huntington, Ind., May 12 -- Von Snider, aged twenty-seven, son of Lewis Snider, who lives south of this city, was killed Monday afternoon when a tractor he was driving turned a backward somersault.

It is thought the accident happened about 1 o’clock, since members of his family at the farm house [sic] did not hear the engine of the machine after that time. The young man had only three of four rounds to go to complete the field in which he was plowing, and had made only one round after the dinner hour.

Did Not Hear Tractor.

The body was found shortly after 3 o’clock by Porter Snider, who had gone into a woods nearby. He did not hear the tractor and decided to investigate. He found the front wheels of the machine in the air and the driver pinned between the steering wheel and the plow.

F. B. Morgan, coroner, was notified of the accident, and he gave permission for the body to be removed from the field before he arrived. Later he made an investigation, and reported that the steering wheel crushed the young man's chest.

Machine Sinks in Sand.

The tractor Snider was driving with a new one, of a powerful design. He had lifted the plows to cross some sand, which had washed down from a hill to the bank of a creek. The drive wheels sank in the sand the tracks show, and it is believed that he finally turned on full power in an effort to get out. As a result it is thought that the gears lifted the front end of the tractor, causing it to turn over backward. Snider was pinned between the steering wheel and the plow to which the tractor was hitched.
