MOTHER LEAVES SIX CHILDREN
A pitiful sight today is the home of Charles May in Aliceville, where
death took the young mother this afternoon and left the father with
six boys.
The youngest was an infant one hour old when his mother died.
Mrs. Mays had become a victim of the influenza while in a delicate
condition. For about three weeks she had been ill with the malady.
This morning she passed through the ordeal of the birth of a child,
and apparently had prospects of complete recovery, when suddenly her
heart failed her.
In the desolate home are the six boys the oldest scarcely thirteen.
Kind neighbors are doing what they can to soften their sorrow and one
motherly woman tenderly cares for the infant who has never yet seen
the sundown of a single day. Not yet do the huddled and awestricken
boys of that home realize the life that awaits them -- a life without
a mother. -- Bicknell News.

LAST RITES FOR H. R. M’ILVAINE
Impressive Funeral Services Over Remains of Highly Respected
Vincennes Man Held In St. James Episcopal Church.
Friday afternoon, February 27, a large concourse of friends assembled
at the St. James Episcopal church to hear the service of the church
read for one of her most-beloved departed members -- Mr. Heathcote R.
McIlvaine, who had been throughout his residence of many years in
Vincennes a leader in all church affairs and conspicuous for his
advocacy of civic improvements and remembered for his deeds of
charity.
Death has been unusually busy this winter among the well-known
citizens of Vincennes and has left in many circles more than common
sense of loss, but perhaps nowhere is this feeling of bereavement more
keen than among the many friends of H. R. McIlvaine, who died within
the week. Quiet and retiring by nature and habit, he nevertheless
attracted people to him by his magnet of personality. Always
courteous, gentle, kind, cheerful and considerate, his business
associates became his friends and from his entrance into the
commercial life of the city many years ago to the end of his days,
those friends remained faithful. Beautiful in his life, high
principled, sweet-natured a high-grade gentleman, he filled a place in
this community that made him worthy of praise and admiration.
Heathcote R. McIlvaine, son of Colonel and Mrs. Frances E. McIlvaine,
was born in Long Island, New York, July 14, 1860. In 1873, the family
moved to Washington, D. C., and in the year 1879, Col. McIlvaine
removed to the [illegible] Slow Farm in Knox county, Indiana. Mr.
McIlvaine, the deceased, was educated in the east and after taking up
his residence in this county was engaged in the lumber business for a
number of years with the firm of N. F. Dalton, whose yards were
opposite the county courthouse, on Broadway street. Afterward, he was
in the same business for a number of years at the present location of
the Klemeyer Lumber Company, but about nine years ago he disposed of
his lumber interests and formed a partnership with L. H. Osterhage,
architect. After war was declared, he was engaged by the U. S.
government as architect for the building erected at Camp Knox. Last
October his work called him to residence in Colorado, near the city of
Denver, where he labored as architect and engineer on the General
Hospital No. 21, in one of which buildings his last days were spent.
The brief illness of Mr. McIlvaine soon developed into pneumonia and
on last Saturday Miss Katherine, his only sister, was summoned to his
bedside, in company with her brother. A. S. McIlvaine, arriving at
Denver the following Tuesday at 3:46, but too late to see their
beloved brother alive, for on Monday, February 23, at 6 o’clock night,
the noble spirit of Heathcote McIlvaine passed on.
The remains were sent to this city and the last sad rites performed
Friday afternoon, within the walls of the church he loved so well and
for which he was devotedly ever in earnest. Those of the family who
were able to attend the funeral were his sister, Miss Katherine, Mr.
and Mrs. A. S. McIlvaine and son Heathcote, and Mrs. Arthur P. Holt of
Indianapolis. Another brother, Alvin McIlvaine of Chicago, was
summoned to the bed side [sic] of his daughter, who is ill with
pneumonia at Greenwich, Conn., where she is attending school, and he
was unable to attend. The floral tributes were very beautiful in color
and design. The altar superfrontal with background of purple, the
color which the church uses during Lenten season, upon which are the
words, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” is of special significance at this holy
season of the church year. With Mrs. Charles S. Miller, as organist,
the large choir impressively sang, “Lord Let Me Know the Number of My
Days,” and “Abide With Me.” Upon the altar at each end was a vase
containing white lilies.
Rev. James Comfort, the rector, spoke in appreciation of the life and
deeds of the deceased in connection with the St. James church and the
community and reminded the friends that his memory is as beautiful as
the bright sky and fragrant spring winds that were the heralds of
Easter on Friday afternoon when his body lay in state in his beloved
St. James Episcopal church. He is now beholding the light of God's
countenance and is experiencing a glorified life of the redeemed. In
his remarks, Rev. Comfort, called attention to the fact that the St.
James pulpit, a design of Mr. McIlvaine, was the work of nine skilled
workmen and donated to the church because of their high regard for him
as an employer. On every side within the beautiful edifice friends are
reminded of the goodness, the kindness, the unselfishness and the true
manliness of him who recently walked among us as a resident and who
worked so faithfully for the church and the good of this community.

Services Over Remains of the Late John F. Miller to Be Conducted From
St. John's Catholic Church -- Sketch of His Life.
The funeral services over the remains of the late John F. Miller, whose
death occurred shortly before midnight Saturday night at the home of his
son, John H. Miller, on South Eighth street, will be conducted at 3:30
o’clock Wednesday morning from the St. John's Catholic church. The
remains will be laid to rest in the Mt. Calvary cemetery.
The deceased [click

Miller, both of whom were born in Germany. He was born in this city,
April 7th, 1840 at the corner of Sixth and Barnet street on the
property now owned and occupied by Mrs. Ann Dorn. His father died just
four months after his birth.
The subject of this sketch attended school for about four months in
the old Catholic school that stood on the lot now occupied by the
Bishop's residences on Church street, between Second and Third street.
At the age of eleven years he started to work to make his way in life
and to help his mother and two half brothers.
On April 26th, 1864, Mr. Miller was united in marriage to Miss
Johanna Thekla Ellerkamp, who was born in Germany. The ceremony was
performed by Rev. Father Mertz, then Pastor of St. John's Catholic
church. Mrs. Miller died on Dec. 28th, 1883. To them were born twelve
children, as follows: John W., who died in infancy; Frank A. and Henry
A., of this city; William H., who died in infancy; John H., Peter B.,
and Louis F., of this city; Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cutcliffe, of
Bessemer, Ala.; Joseph A., of Memphis, Tenn.; Lawrence H., who died in
infancy; Mrs. Hannah L. Bolk, of this city; and Emma S., who died in
infancy. In addition to eight children the deceased is also survived
by thirty-eight grandchildren.
The deceased was a pioneer in the wagon making business in this city,
having conducted a most successful business for about thirty-five
years at the corner of Sixth and Vigo streets. He retired from active
business in January, 1900. The deceased never held an elective office
of any kind, but served in minor offices by appointment. He was a
member of the first Volunteer Fire department of this city, serving as
chief of the department for a time.
The deceased, by his energy and thrift, accumulated a number of
pieces of property in this city, but in 1914 he divided all of his
property among his children.
Mr. Miller was the oldest member in point of membership of St. John's
congregation and served as altar boy during the ceremonies of the
laying of the corner stone by Bishop de St. Palais, who was then the
bishop of this diocese and resided in this city in the old Cathedral
parsonage.
Mr. Miller often recalled the incident of having the honor of handing
the bishop all the important papers and church documents which are
contained in the corner stone.
Mr. Miller also had the distinction as serving as altar boy during
the celebration of the first mass read in the old St. John's church.
Mr. Miller was the only surviving charter member of St. John's
Benevolent Society which was organized January 1st, 1866. During his
membership Mr. Miller filled nearly all offices of the society and
served several times as its president, and always took an active part
in the proceedings of the society up to his late illness. This society
will turn out in a body to attend the funeral.
