FIVE KILLED BY EXPLOSION

Mr. and Mrs. George Allen and Three of Their Children Die When Oil Can Explodes While Kindling Fire.

Mrs. Fannie Perry, 1403 Perry street, yesterday received a letter from her cousin at McDonald, Kan., telling of a tragedy which occurred at the home of George W. Allen, February 26, when Mr. Allen, his wife, and three of their children, William Lloyd, aged 8, Vera Louise, aged 5, and James Woodrow, aged 2, died as a result of an oil explosion when Mr. Allen was kindling a fire. The surviving children are Lillie and Bessie.

The Allen family are natives of Knox county and while here Mr. Allen was employed as a coal miner. The family moved from this county to Kansas less than a year ago, in May 1919.

An oil can exploded when Mr. Allen was making a fire in the stove. Everyone who was in the room died. Little Bessie and Lloyd were upstairs but Lloyd ran down through the fire. Bessie started down and was burned some about the face and hands, but not seriously. Lillie and Bessie knocked out a window pane and jumped out, the former not being burned at all.

Mr. Allen lived only a few hours and little Louise died the same day. Lloyd died in the morning two days later and Mrs. Allen died in the evening of that day. Little James died Sunday night. Mrs. Allen had been ill for two weeks before the tragedy.

FALLING COAL CRUSHES MINER

James Anderson Is Killed While Working His Wagon Mine Near Oakland City -- Well Known Here.

James Anderson, better known as Jimmie Anderson, about five years ago a night man at the Princeton coal mine, lost his life in his wagon mine two and one-half miles southeast of Oakland City, yesterday afternoon while “mining off a shot,” says the Princeton Clarion-News. The coal rolled over on Anderson and broke his collarbone and crushed five ribs. The injured man was taken to his home in Oakland City where he died about 7 o’clock yesterday evening. He was between 55 and 60 years of age.

The deceased leaves a widow and two daughters, Freda and Olive. His stepson, Scott Withers, who assisted him in operating the wagon mine, also survives.

Jimmie Anderson was one of the best known miners in the county. He has worked in the Princeton, Terre Haute, Francisco and Oakland City coal fields and has always been highly thought of everywhere he has worked.

The Anderson Withers wagon mine was very successful during the coal strike of last winter and the Clarion-News at the time carried an account of the operations of the shaft which kept many adjacent towns in coal. The wagon lines were not affected by the strike.

IN MEMORIAM

The passing into the life beyond of Luther C. Angleton, of Palmyra Township, who was widely known throughout the county and whose funeral was held Thursday afternoon, is worthy of highest tribute. His twenty-two years of life were spent in exemplary living, being a prominent young farmer of Knox county and having been reared with the following relatives, who survive: Mr. and Mrs. John Angleton, father and mother, and James Shouse, a grandfather; Mesdames Frank Reel, Russell Snyder, and Paul Jenkins; and Misses Nellie, Catherine and Aline Angleton, the sisters; Robert, James and William, brothers of the deceased. An early spring wedding was planned when the bonds of holy wedlock would unite Luther Angleton -– now deceased –– and Miss Bessie Reel, making his untimely passing particularly sad. Tributes of sympathy, in the form of French baskets of flowers, a floral pillow, wreaths and sprays of roses and carnations from friends in the neighborhood told of their high esteem.

A favorite poem of the bereaved family is this:

“There is no flock, howe’er watched and tended,
But one dead lamb is there.
There is no fireside, howe’er defended,
But has one vacant chair.
He is not dead, the child of our affection,
But gone into that school,
Where he no longer needs our poor protection.”
