POISON TAKES ITS VICTIM

Lena Faith Died Early Wednesday Morning After Taking Bichloride of Mercury Tablets With Suicidal Intent.

Lena Faith, the young woman who swallowed tablets containing bichloride of mercury with suicidal intent on Tuesday evening of last week, died at about 1 o’clock Wednesday morning at her home, 903 North Ninth Street. She was aged about 17 years. Death came almost exactly one week after she took the poison. She swallowed the tablets at about 7:30 in the evening and died not long after midnight at the close of the next Tuesday.

It is a property of bichloride of mercury that death does not follow until several days, usually characterized by intense suffering, and that a person who swallows it is never safe until after ten days have passed. It is seldom that a person can be saved who has taken this poison and it is understood that the Faith girl’s physician informed her several days ago that he could do nothing further for her. She became salavated and was subject to severe twitching until it was evident that she could not live long, although members of her family thought that she was somewhat improved Tuesday evening.
