BABY SWALOWS [sic] TABLETS; DIES

Sixteen Months Old Daughter of Albert Edwards, Near Sanborn, Died After Eating Too Many Ppills.

(Special to Vincennes Commercial)

Sanborn, Ind., March 25. -- The sixteen months old baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Edwards, who live about two miles from Sanborn, died at 7:30 o’clock Wednesday evening as the result of swallowing a number of medical tablets.

Mr. Edwards had brought home a package of Hinkle tablets from the doctor and laid them on a front room table. While Mrs. Edwards was out of the room the baby's three-year-old brother secured the tablets and fed eight or nine of them to her. This was shortly after the noon hour and the baby was put to sleep. When she woke up the mother noticed that the baby was very fretful. She went to get a drink of water for the child and when she came back a little girl had fallen over on the floor. Dr. Johnson was immediately summoned from Sanborn and he worked with her for an hour and a half but death came at 7:30.

It was said that the tablets contain a small percentage of strychnine and cannot safely be taken in such large quantities even by an adult. The funeral will be held at the residence Friday afternoon. Mr. Edwards is a farmer. He had moved with his family from Sanborn only last week.

YOUNG MOTHER IS FLU VICTIM

Six Children are Left Motherless By Death of Mrs. Evans at Bicknell -- Life of Misfortune.

Six children were left motherless Wednesday, March 10, by the death of Mrs. Mary Edith Evans, wife of William Evans, of 619 Illinois street, says the Bicknell News. She was thirty-one years old, having been born April 12, 1888.

Five of the children are boys, and one is a girl, the oldest being a boy about eight years old. Also she was caring for a young brother about fourteen who had been left motherless by the death of his and her mother.

Mrs. Evans had been suffering from the influenza, but it was believed that she had recovered from this, although the doctor had warned against danger of heart trouble.

Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. Evans had been sleeping, according to reports, and wakening suddenly threw up her arms, and after a few gasps fell back on the bed -- dead.

Hard indeed had been the life of the unhappy woman since the great Ohio floods of several years ago. They were living in Ohio then, and lost all they had. Some time ago they came to Bicknell, but a fortune that allowed others to prosper seemed to be an evil fate pursuing them. Mr. Evans was taken ill with typhoid and for many weeks lay critically ill. Just as he was ready to go back to work the strike came. Then came a seige of typhoid for the mother's younger brother, followed by a strange malady that affected the mother.

The influenza, heating not their predicament, also beset them this spring and all of the family were taken ill with it. In the case of the mother the influenza became pneumonia, but it was believed that she was successfully recovering, when the end came with dramatic suddenness, to the young mother whose life recently had been one of burden and sorrow.

She was born in Nelsonville, Ohio, in 1888, and was the daughter of Clark West who still lives in Ohio. It is said that she is a niece of Mrs. Ben Bizer.

Funeral services will be held at three o’clock Saturday afternoon at the home. Relatives from Ohio are coming to the funeral.
