Cause of death ruled overdose

A Vincennes man found dead in his apartment last week died of a drug overdose, according to Knox County Coroner Donnie Halter.

Rusty Pearson, 44, was found dead in his apartment at 1702 Willow St., on Friday.

“Following the autopsy, the cause of death was determined to be an overdose on fentanyl pain patches,” Halter said. “We are still waiting on some of the toxicology reports, though.”

Halter said Pearson had a prescription for the narcotic pain patch and that he may have been dead for as long as 18 days before he was found.

“The last time anyone saw him was the Monday following the Super Bowl - so Feb. 5,” Halter said. “We aren't certain on a time of death, but we do know he'd been at his home for quite some time before he was found.”

Pearson was discovered by a maintenance man who had been checking the buildings.

Fentanyl patches are generally prescribed to people who suffer from chronic pain and can be 80 times more powerful than morphine. Overdoses from abuse of fentanyl pain patches is something Halter said he sees more and more of.

“Unfortunately we've seen an increase in cases involving overdose from the fentanyl pain patches,” Halter said. “These individuals either heat up the patches and inject the drug into their system or they cut them up into pieces and ingest them. The patches are intended to deliver narcotic pain medication over time, about 8 to 12 hours. When that medicine hits the body all at once - it overloads it and the body just shuts down.”

Halter said Pearson died from ingesting the pain patch and that he has seen a steady increase in prescription medication abuse and overdose in the last five years.

“Prescription medication abuse is almost as prevalent as methamphetamine use,” Halter said. “When law enforcement tightens the screws in one area, drug users find another avenue to take.”

Following article (with photos of the three victims) appeared on page 1 of the Friday, July 1, 1966 edition of the Vincennes Sun-Commercial.

THREE YOUTHS KILLED AS CAR LEAVES ROAD

Three Vincennes youths were fatally injured Thursday in a one-car crash on IL. 33, about four miles north of the junction of old U.S. 50 at Westport. The car, out of control, struck a tree.

Victims of the wreck were Miss Clarisse Hendricks, 18, of 506 South Seventh, Miss Jacquelyn Kay Pritchard, 18, of 604 South Tenth, and George G. Ivers, 21, of Route 5.

Illinois state trooper Frank Groves said the accident occurred about 7:50 p.m., and that Ivers and Miss Hendricks were killed instantly.

Groves said Ivers was the driver of the convertible, and that the girls were riding in the front seat. He said the car was going south, and that the three earlier had been visiting in Russellville, IL.

Ivers lost control of the car and it left the pavement to the right shoulder. It traveled some 150 feet off the road before hitting a tree head-on, Groves said.

The impact threw Ivers and Miss Hendricks from the car, and Miss Pritchard was thrown into the rear seat, Groves said. Miss Pritchard was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she died of her injuries at 9:59 p.m.

Groves said the car apparently was traveling at a high rate of speed, and that it was totally wrecked.

Miss Pritchard was a native of Lawrence County, IL., and was born January 6, 1948, a daughter of Lewis and Mary Alice Pritchard.

She graduated in 1966 from Lincoln High School and was a member of the Methodist church.

Surviving besides her parents are three sisters and three brothers, Gale, Sheila, Debbie, Danny, Ritchie and Tony, all at home; her grandmother, Mrs. Stella Timms of Russellville, IL.; and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Alice Hedrick.

The body is at the Brockman funeral home, where friends may call after 6 p.m., Saturday, and where the funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m., the Rev. Dale Miller officiating. burial will be in the Russellville, IL. cemetery.

Miss Hendricks was a native of Danville, IL., and was born July 24, 1947, a daughter of Ralph and Sabine Hendricks.
