GRANGER, Rhoda Gazella (Howard)
Source: unknown

Rhoda Gazella (Howard) Granger went home to her Lord and Savior on June 5, 2007. She was born to Georgia (French) and Eddie E. Howard on May 22, 1915, in Pleasant Ridge, Ky., where she helped her father on the tobacco farm. She graduated from Western High School in Owensboro, Ky., and began work there as a nanny shortly after graduation, alternating between there and Columbia, Mo., with the family.

On Dec. 31, 1939, she and John Farrell Granger of Wheatland were married in Indianapolis. Two daughters were born to this union, Gazella Ann and Eleanor Louise. Farrell truly loved “all three of his girls,” and was the “love of Rhoda's life.” She never remarried after his sudden death on Jan. 6, 1958.

Rhoda held several jobs in the years that followed his death. She worked as a short order cook, a housekeeper at Good Samaritan Hospital, and finally for 19 years as a clerk in the mail and duplicating services at Vincennes University from where she retired. While employed at VU, she was beloved by faculty and staff for her ability to complete the work on time and was referred to as “grandmother” by many of their children and the children of the VU Daycare Center.

Rhoda professed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Kentucky. Following her marriage, she moved to Wheatland where she became an active member of the First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for children and adults and loved to present inspirational readings at the Christmas and Easter programs. As long as she was able, she regularly attended church services. In her later years, she loved to hear her great-nephew, Brandon Humphries, play the drums during the morning worship services. Rhoda relied on God for everything and found comfort through her faith, especially after the death of her beloved husband. She never failed to tithe.

After retirement, Rhoda took great enjoyment in remodeling her home, gardening, cooking for family and friends, and making jellies to share with others. Her greatest joy, however, was always her love of God and family.

While she loved being in her home, she looked forward to an annual fall trip with her daughter, Eleanor, to visit her granddaughter, Krista, in Chicago, Ill., and later trips to Raleigh, N.C., to visit both granddaughters, Krista and Dana. Rhoda also shared a very special relationship with the late Floyd “Mike” Granger, who from the time of his birth became like a son, and she overcame her fear of water to visit him and his family in Virginia and Florida where he was stationed with the U.S. Navy. Glaucoma forced her to give up driving at the age of 85, and she tremendously missed the independence this provided her. Neighbors Paul, Kay and Carleen Turner, the late LeRoy Granger and his wife, Ernestine, Debbie, Amanda and Heather Orchard helped her as she had helped them in her earlier years. She loved people and sharing over the telephone.

On Feb. 15, 2005, her hip broke. Although she had a hip replacement, she was unable to regain her ability to walk independently and spent the remainder of her life at BridgePointe Health Campus in Vincennes. While residing there, she enjoyed her exercise and rehabilitation sessions, the social activities and attended church services. She especially enjoyed her weekly beauty and manicure sessions and looked forward to visits from her family and friends. Visits from the staff's children and grandchildren and from a prior co-worker and friend, Alberta Talbott, were special to her.

Rhoda leaves to cherish her memory two daughters and sons-in-law, Gazella Ann Summitt (Paul), and Eleanor Granger-White (James). She loved her sons-in-law and all the special attention they gave to her. She loved being “Me-Me” to her granddaughters, Krista Elaine Summitt and Dana Leigh Summitt, both of Raleigh, N.C., and dearly loved her role as “great-grandma” to her great-grandson, Keegan Farrell Summitt. She was also happy to include in her family two stepgrandchildren, Allison White of Indianapolis and Desmond White of Los Angeles, Calif., and stepgreat-grandchildren, Olivia and Eva White of Indianapolis.

Rhoda is survived by one brother, W.A. Howard and his wife, Modestine, of Owensboro; and many nieces and nephews, Joyce Davidson, James M. Granger Jr., Janet M. (Granger) Ross, Robert F. Granger and his wife, Joyce, Phyllis Monon and her husband, Paul, Robert Darden, Betty Lou Howard, William Mason, Frank Mason and his wife, Joanne, Lester Thompson M.D., and his wife, Lori, Chamlin Howard and his wife, Sherylin, William Howard and Brenda C. Howard. There are a host of great-nieces and nephews and cousins.

A brother, Mansion Howard; and three sisters, Zadia Howard Thompson, Lucille Howard Mason and A'Ver Howard Jackson preceded Rhoda in death.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, 321 E. Adams St., Wheatland.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway St., and from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow in the Wheatland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wheatland First Baptist Church or Vincennes University Foundation.

Arrangements were handled by Goodwin Funeral Home.

The service times for Rhoda Gazella (Howard) Granger in Wednesday's edition of the Sun-Commercial contained an error. These are the correct times.
