Source: The Vincennes Commercial, 3 Mar 1920, page 8
James Johnson died at the Good Samaritan hospital at 6:30 o’clock Tuesday night. Johnson is the man who formerly lived in a tent on the river bank at the foot of Seminary street. Answering a call from persons living in the neighborhood one extremely cold night about a month ago Captain Smith went out to investigate and found him in a serious condition unable to help himself and with nobody to take care of him. Township Trustee Willis arranged to take him to the Good Samaritan and he was there from that time until his death last night. It is not known if he has any surviving relatives and little is known of the man. He appears to be between 55 and 60 years of age.

JOHNSON, Richard
Source: The Bicknell Daily News, 2 Mar 1949
Richard Johnson was brought home and laid to rest in 1949 — five years and two months after his death. This is the obituary which appeared in the Wednesday, March 2, 1949 issue of The Bicknell Daily News:
Plan Last Rites For Pfc. Richard Johnson Sunday
Last rites for the late Pfc. Richard Johnson, who was killed in action in Italy on December 16, 1943, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday from Asbury Chapel Methodist church.
Rev. Newton Jones and Rev. A. W. Stoneburner will officiate. Interment, directed by Poindexter-Wampler, will be made in I.O.O.F. Cemetery (now Bicknell Memorial Cemetery) and Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct military rites at the grave.
Remains of Pfc. Johnson will be brought to Bicknell late Thursday.
He was a member of the 142nd Infantry regiment of the 46th Infantry division. He sailed in March, 1943, for North Africa. He participated with his division in establishment of the beachhead at Salerno, Italy.
Pfc. Johnson had enlisted in the army February 19, 1941, at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. He received training at Camp Blanding, Fla., and Camp Edwards, Mass., before going oversees.
A native of England, he was born in Backworth on October 8, 1906. He was a son of Charles and Ann Gregory Johnson. The family came to Shelburn, Ind. in 1907 and moved to Aliceville in 1919, where they lived since that time.
He attended elementary school in Aliceville and high school in Bicknell. In high school playing days, Pfc. Johnson was a four-letter winner in both football and baseball, captaining the team in the latter sport in his last year.
He was a catcher on the baseball team and played guard on the Bulldog eleven. Pfc. Johnson was rated one of the best linemen in the school's athletic history. He was well regarded by students and faculty for his scholastic attitude.
after graduation with the class of 1929, he worked for a time on the staff of the Shelbyville newspaper under James Law. Later he was employed in factories at Pontiac, Mich. During the two years prior to joining the service, he worked at American 1 mine.
In addition to his widowed mother, Mrs. Ann Johnson of Aliceville, Pfc. Johnson is survived by two brothers, George and Robert of Pontiac, and a sister, Mrs. (Anna) Carl Julian of Bicknell route 2.
During his army service in this country, Pfc. Johnson visited home three times, twice on regular furloughs and again at the time of his father's death in an automobile accident near the family home.
His mother received the Purple Heart decoration for her son, with a letter from Henry L. Stimson, then secretary of war, in which the latter extended personal sympathy and said: "The loss of a loved one is beyond man's repairing, and the medal is of slight value, not so, however, the message it carries. We are all comrades in arms in this battle for our country, and those who have gone are not, and never will be forgotten by those of us who remain. I hope you will accept the medal in evidence of such remembrance."
Here is the obituary that appeared in The Bicknell Daily News Tuesday, January 11, 1944:
Aliceville Man Killed In Italy With Fifth Army
The ...... mother of PFC Richard Johnson of Aliceville was saddened Monday afternoon when she received word from Adjutant General James Ulio, that her son had been killed in action in Italy on December 17.
Johnson, formerly a star athlete in Bicknell high school and one of more popular young men about town, was a member of an infantry detachment in the Fifth Army. The telegram received by Mrs. Johnson said that a letter would follow, and expressed the deepest regrets of Secretary of War Stimson that the soldier had been killed.
PFC Johnson was born October 8, 1906 in Backworth, England. The family came to Shelburn, Indiana in 1907, and moved to Aliceville in 1919, where they had lived since that time. His father was Charley Johnson.
He attended grade school in Aliceville, and graduated from the Bicknell High School with the class of 1929. That class chose as its motto "Not the Sunset but The Dawn".
During his school years, he was an outstanding member of the baseball and football teams during the four years. He received letters in both sports, the first in 1925, and each year subsequently. In baseball, he was a catcher, in football he was an outstanding guard. He had a fine scholastic attitude, and was well regarded by teachers and students.
His first employment was on the staff of Shelbyville (Ind.) daily newspaper, under James Law, well known newspaper man of Southern Indiana. Later he worked in factories in Pontiac, Michigan. During the two years prior to his induction into military service, he worked at American No. 1.
He entered service February 19, 1942, and was trained in Camp Blanding, Fla., in Dilworth, North Carolina, and Camp Edwards, Mass. During his stay in this country he was at home on three occasions, twice on furlough and once when his father met a tragic death in an automobile accident near the family home.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by by two brothers, George and Robert, now residing in Pontiac, Mich., and a sister, Mrs. Carl Julian, residing near Freelandville.
It was learned today that another Bicknell soldier had written home telling of the death of the soldier. In his letter he said only, "I am sure Mrs. Johnson will be sad about her son." This information was not imparted to the family, recipients feeling that such information should come from the government.
Then on Friday, Jan. 14, 1944, I found
Mother Has Later Word About Son
Mrs. Anna Johnson of Aliceville, whose son PFC Richard Johnson, has recently been killed in Italy, received a letter Thursday from the War Department, confirming the telegram received earlier in the week.
In the letter Major General James A.Ulio, Adjutant General, expressed his sympathy and said that at this time no further details were available.
Mrs. Johnson anticipates that she may hear from some of her son's comrades, one in particular whose former home was in Bicknell, which will give her full particulars of her son's death.
Her son, George Johnson, employed in war work in Pontiac, Michigan, is spending a few days at home with his mother. Mr. Johnson was recently released from the armed forces, and is now engaged in tank and gun production.
