FALL OF SLATE KILLS BEGEMAN

Loader at Martin Mine Dies Tuesday Afternoon Following Injury -- Lower Ribs Crushed and Broken.

Bicknell, Ind., March 2 -- A fall of slate that caught Henry Begeman across the loins, proved fatal to him this afternoon, and at ten minutes after one, he died.

The call for a doctor came about the middle of the forenoon, and the injured man was brought in an ambulance to a physician's office. An examination showed that the unfortunate man had small chance for his life. The first X-ray showed all the lower ribs on the right side crushed and broken with probable internal injuries to the kidney.

The next X-ray showed that the spine was dislocated, the vertebrae having been pushed out of line and pinching the spinal cord.

Plans were made at first, following the examination, to take the injured man to the hospital at Vincennes, but later, upon the doctor's advice, he was carried back to the ambulance and taken to his own home where he died in a few minutes. He was conscious until his death, and with his hands aided his wife and loved ones in their efforts to warm with hot water bottles his chilling body.

Henry was 25 years old, and was the husband of the daughter of George Hubbard. He lived at -10 East Eighth street. He had been employed as a loader at the Martin for about six months.

Source: unknown

BICKNELL — Lydia A. Berger, 89, Freelandville, died at 11:10 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Freelandville Community Home in Freelandville.

Born May 1, 1917, near Freelandville, she was the daughter of Charles and Lydia (Oexmann) Buescher. As her mother died giving birth, she was reared by a cousin, Annie Schaefer, and her husband, John.

A 1935 graduate of Freelandville High School, Lydia was confirmed as a member of Bethel Church in 1931. Her deep faith in God was shown through her many years of service as a member of the Loyal Builders Sunday School class and Women’s Guild and through her dedication to the church music program.

Music was ever important in Lydia’s life. At the age of 13 she won a piano competition at Vincennes University, in which she was the youngest participant. As a result, Lydia won a scholarship for piano lessons. Lydia began giving private piano lessons at the age of 14 and eventually also gave organ lessons, at times giving 60 or more music lessons in a week. Her proficiency on both piano and organ was widely recognized, as she played for countless weddings, funerals, and other special occasions in the area throughout her adult life. Well Known Retired Merchant And Salesman Died at 8:30 Saturday Night at the Home of His Daughter -- Had Gone to St. Louis to Consult a Specialist -- Remains to be Brought Here.

Daniel L. Bonner, the well known retired merchant and salesman, of 503 Shelby street, passed away at 8:30 o’clock Saturday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Beddoe, in St. Louis. The announcement of Mr. Bonner’s death was received in this city by friends of the family, and although his death was not unexpected, the announcement came as a shock to his many friends.

Mr. Bonner has been in failing health for some time past, and about five or six weeks ago, he went to St. Louis, to consult a specialist. He received treatment in a hospital at that point for some time, but on Tuesday evening, of this week, he suffered a stroke of paralysis. He was then moved to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Beddoe, in St. Louis, and although everything possible was done for him he continued to grow weaker, passing away Saturday night.

George E. Gardner, of Gardner & Sons, will go to St. Louis this morning, and will bring the remains back to the city for interment. Just when the remains will arrive cannot be definitively stated at this time, and arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.

Mr. Bonner was about sixty-five years of age, and in addition to being generally known throughout this city, had an extensive acquaintance throughout the whole of southern Indiana. Mr. Bonner formerly conducted a general store at Decker, and although he retired from active control of the store a number of years ago the business which he established is still being conducted by his son, Leonard Bonner. For over twenty-five years, Mr. Bonner was travelling [sic] salesman for Hullman & Company, of Terre Haute, but because of his failing health he retired from the road last fall.

Mr. Bonner was prominent in the business and political life of the city. Politically he was a Republican, and was always active for his party. He was a delegate for his party to the National convention at St. Louis, and served as delegate in many of the city, county and district conventions. He was also a member of the Vincennes delegation who went to Washington, D. C. and boosted for the present Federal Building.

When the Metropolitan Police Law was enacted, Mr. Bonner was one of the first members of the Metropolitan Police Board in this city, and gave the city most commendable service.

Mr. Bonner is survived by his widow, one son, Leonard, of Decker, and two daughters, Mrs. A. H. Beddoe, of St. Louis, and Mrs. Lucille Padgett, of this city.

Bruce.

Mrs. Rebecca Harper Bruce, commonly known as “Aunt Beck,” of Bruceville, peacefully departed this life at 8:40 o’clock Sunday evening, April 11.

For forty-eight years Mrs. Bruce had been a resident of Bruceville and during all of that time she had lived in the historic old Bruce home which passed its hundredth anniversary nine years ago.

She loved that ancient landmark with its antique furnishings and took the greatest pride and pleasure in showing it to her many guests while she recounted interesting bits of history concerning it -- especially of the time when Abraham Lincoln made a political speech in Bruceville and spent the night in the Bruce home.

Although nearing her eighty-fifth mile-stone Mrs. Bruce had been remarkably active and clear of mind and it was a great shock to her numerous friends when they heard that a paralytic stroke had caused her to fall in her yard Sunday morning.

A short but impressive funeral service was conducted at the house and internment was made in the Bruceville cemetery.

The pall-bearers were the following nephews of the deceased: Charlie Bruce, B. F. Sartor, O. F. Willis, Oscar Scott, Willie Willis and Charles Sartor.

Following is the obituary which was read at the funeral service by a grand-niece of Mrs. Bruce.

On the 6th day of June, in the year of 1835, a fourth little daughter came to bless the home of Thomas and Mary Harper in Woodford county, Kentucky. The little one was named Rebecca Ann Harper and grew up to be thrifty, cheerful and lovable “Aunt Beck” whom we all have known and loved for so many years.

The happy days of childhood spent in the sunny south were among “Aunt Beck’s” most cherished memories and she never tired of recalling them for the entertainment of her many visitors.

“Aunt Beck” was yet in her early teens when her parents moved from their southern home to this county.

A brother Tom returned from the Mexican war broken in health and not long afterward was drowned while helping to survey some government lands. Another brother, George, contracted pneumonia while studying law in the south.

On December 28, in the year of 1872, she was married to James C. Bruce and then followed a few bright years during which her every thought was for the comfort and happiness of “Uncle Jim” and their two little children.

Another brother, Nicholas, and three more sisters, Bettie Katherine, preceded “Aunt Beck” in the Great Beyond; and one brother, Charles, and sister, Hettie, are left to miss her here.

Early in life “Aunt Beck” united with the Christian church of Bruceville during the ministry of Rev. Spears.
