SUCCESS! July 28, 1998
My goal was to find the descendants of Thomas McCullough and return the
bible to the McCullough family. I am happy to report that I was able to
locate the youngest daughter of Thomas McCullough, Wilma (McCullough )
Rust, who lives in Marion, and gave the bible to her today.
The story of this bible is amazing, but I'll try to be brief:
This 100 year old bible was found in a trash dumpster 10 years ago! The
person who found it, pulled it from the trash and kept it in their home, not
knowing what to do with it. Just this past week, they decided to give it to
a friend of mine who knew of my interest in history, especially genealogy.
I received several responses from my posting, but no direct descendants,
however, by using People Search, I located Wilma Rust, Thomas McCullough's
youngest daughter.
When I contacted Wilma and told her about the bible, she was thrilled
and amazed. She told me that she had given the bible to her nephew several
years ago and thought that he was old enough to understand its importance.
But when cleaning house one day, he threw the bible away. She thought that
this priceless family bible was lost forever.
What a thrill it was to hand the bible back to her and to see her shed
tears of joy as she spoke of the memories of her parents and family.
Wilma said that getting such an important part of her family's history
returned to her after 10 years, was by the providence of God.
    I would have to agree.
