Wabash County, Indiana was formed from
Cass and
Grant
counties in 1832, and named after the Wabash River which flows through it.
The first settlements occured near the present city of Wabash, after a treaty
with the Miami and Potawatomi Indians. New farm land and the construction of the Wabash
and Erie Canal brought many people to this region in the mid 1830's.
My name is Mike Sweeney, the USGenWeb Project
Coordinator for Wabash County. I am a descendant of Irish immigrants who came to build the
Wabash & Erie canal in the 1830's, and with their earnings, bought and cleared land, raised families, and
became part of the community. If you would like to contribute information to this page,
or have comments and suggestions, please let me know. If you would like to host an Indiana
county for the USGenWeb Project, please contact Debby Beheler,
the Indiana State Coordinator.
