Railroads when they came to a town brought many benefits including the expansion of the local markets to other towns and communities. Goods such as coal, lumber, and wheat became more affordable, and a reliable form of transportation largely unaffected by weather became available. These benefits came to Wabash, Indiana in 1856 when the first railroad, the Lake Erie, Wabash & St. Louis railroad (later the Wabash Railroad), was built running east-west. The second and more important line, the Cincinnati, Wabash & Michigan Railway, a north-south line, came in 1872. It provided not only a passenger depot and freight house but also repair shops. As ownership of the line changed to the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, the Big Four, to the New York Central Railroad, the railroad repair shops were maintained until 1925. The shops at various times employed more than two hundred workers providing good paying jobs to skilled and unskilled workers as well. This list of railroad employees has been compiled from censuses and Wabash county directories by Susan Neff.
