Register Report for Hugh Matthew Ryan
Generation 1
1. Hugh Matthew Ryan-1[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] was born about 1827 in Limerick County, Ireland.
Notes for Hugh Matthew Ryan:
General Notes:
The earliest record that I have of the Ryan family begins with Matthew Ryan, who according to the family history, "died of old age" Saturday, the 8th of Sptember, 1855 in County Limerick Ireland.
1870 Census. I have notes that say he came from Pallas Grean (which has multiple spellings),
Despite my efforts to prove this through work done with the "Tipperary Family History Research" Center, I've not been able to find documentation. They have all of the records for the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. I've since learned that there were so many Ryans in this area that you have to know the family's nickname to be sure. Church records do not include middle names. They tell me that if you throw a rock up in the air, the chances are 50/50 that it will land on a Ryan. I believe their parish Church was St. John the Baptist.
The first generation of "our" Ryans in this country were Hugh Matthew Ryan and Mary Ellen
McInerney (multiple spellings of her last name. Census records for 1850 say that Hugh came to the United States arriving May 2, 1849. This was at the end of the Irish Potato Famine which caused untold suffering for the Irish people. He was 22 years old when he came.
I have a record for a Mary McInerny arriving on May 30, 1849 at the age of 20. I'm not sure I have the correct record, but it seems right. According to Census Records, Mary was born in England, but a review of her death record shows that her parents were both born in Ireland.
Hugh Matthew's Port of Departure was aboard a ship called the Constitution, leaving from Liverpool.
If I have the right record for Mary Ellen, her Port of Departure was Limerick aboard the Lady
Harvey.Hugh and Mary Ellen both began their lives in the U.S. in Evansville, IN. I have no way of knowing if they met in the states or in Ireland. In the 1850 Census, Hug is listed as being 24 years old and has a 14 year old living in the same household by the name of Mary Ryan. It could be his younger sister. His occupation is listed as "brickmaker".

His occupation is listed as "brickmaker".
Hugh and Mary Ellen got married at Assumption Church in Evansville, IN on May 4, 1852. I have a copy of their Marriage Record and a letter from the Archdiocese. The marriage was witnessd by Patrick Ryan and Mary Ryan. The record does not give any parent names.
I have notes from a notebook copied by Virginia V. Ryan that mentions a Jeremiah Ryan, son of
Mathew Ryan, and James H., son of H. Ryan born in Evansville, IN. James Ryan's death certificate proves that he is the son of Hugh and Mary Ellen. It also states that Hugh was born in Ireland and Mary Ellen was born in England. (I've since found out through Mary Ellen's Death Certificate that both of her parents were born in Ireland).
I was able to find records for Jeremiah Ryan. Virginia Ryan's notebook states that he enlisted in the U.S.A. 2nd Division of Company A under Captain Travis going out to the Rocky Mountains. Date of enlistment: 1855. The U.S. Government sent me a copy of his service registration, which confirmed all of this. I now want to see if he has an application for a pension on file. I do not know what happened to him. I think he may have been Hugh Matthew's older brother. He was 29 years old when he enlisted in 1855.
To see a picture of the Assumption Church and a copy of the Marriage License, see the attached.
In the 1850 Census, there is a Mary Ryan (age 14) living in the sqame location as "our" Hugh Ryan.
He is listed as being a "brickmaker". He is listed as a "laborer" in the 1860 Census. By 1870, the Page 1 of 7 Saturday, September 12, 2009 11:29:43 AM

He is listed as being a "brickmaker". He is listed as a "laborer" in the 1860 Census. By 1870, the family is living in St. Louis, MO. Again, Hugh's occupation is "laborer". I cannot find the family in the 1880 Census. The 1890 Census does not exist. Mary Ellen is listed as a widow in the 1900 Census.
By now, the entire family is living in Cincinnati. Our James Hugh is living with his family in Elmwood.
The three other living children, John, Margaret and Ellen, are all living with their mother on Wade
Street in the West End.
Mary Ellen McInerney daughter of Matthew and Margaret was born on 14 Aug 1830 in England[7, 8, 9].
She died on 03 Jul 1903 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, USA[7, 8, 9].
Notes for Mary Ellen McInerney:
General Notes:
On the death certificate for Mary Ellen's son, James H. Ryan, it spells her maiden name as
"McIrnerney" which I think is incorrect. It also states that she was born in England. It also states in the "Indes of Cincinnati, Ohio Death Records 1903-1905" that she was born in England. There is a Death Notice for Mary Ellen in the Cincinnati Post dated July 4, 1903, In it her maiden name is spelled McInnerny.

Godparents were Jeremiah Ryan and Joanna McInerney.
iii. Richard Ryan[11, 12, 13] was born on 12 Apr 1857 in Evansville, IN.

He died when my grandfather, Royal J. Ryan, was only 13 years old. Roy had to drop out of school and support his family.

Notes for Royal (Roy) Joseph Francis Ryan:
General Notes:
We think that if we checked baptismal records, Roy's name would be listd as Joseph Francis Royal
Ryan. At the time of Roy's birth, the Catholic Church had a policy of only baptizing babies with the
name of a saint for their first name. This policy resulted in Virginia Elizabeth Vonderheide, for
instance, being baptized Elizabeth Virginia Vonderheide. Both the death certificate and Social
Security index list his name as Royal J. Ryan. Family records list it both ways.
Virginia Elizabeth Vonderheide daughter of August Henry Vonderheide and Anna Catherine Moser was born on 01 May 1899 in Covington, KY. She died on 20 May 1986 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio,

General Notes:
The following was read at the funeral of Virginia Ryan, Jones, Godar, Klug at the Church of
the Nativity, June 30, 1994. It was written by her daughter, Kathleen.
Dear Mom,
The end of your life has made me ponder the end of my own. What will I be able to say
were my accomplishments when my day comes? You can imagine the challenges we
faced writing your obituary. Women of your generation acquired a new name with every
new commitment - and it seems as if you were not one to shy away from commitment.
You were born a Ryan. Remember how we would joke about coming from a long line of
strong women? Your mother shaped our family identity and participation in family life was
not an option. My childhood is filled with the memories of large family dinners on each of
the holidays, visions of a beautifully set table with Grandmas crystal and china, and the
cousins singing as we did the dishes. How many hours we could spend watching old
movies which recorded the ever-increasing size of our families as we scurried about on the
front lawn collecting Easter eggs. Who can forget the aroma of the freshly baked pecan
rolls or the trip to Clifty Falls?
Following World War II, you and millions of other frustrated young women madly sought
out husbands from the boys returning from the war to end all wars, and luckily for me
you became a Jones. You and Dad had seven children and gave each of us the greatest
girft - one money could not buy. The two of you believed, without question, that each of us
was going to be somebody. As a parent now, I wonder what it was that you and Dad did
to enable each of us to believe that there were no limits on our potential. I wish the secret
of your success could be put in a bottle and marketed to many of the children I teach each
day who have not been given this gift.
You and Dad faced cancer together early on. Ill never forget walking with Dad down the
front walk of Good Samaritan Hospital following your surgery and having him question
why, when for the fist time in your lives things should be getting easier, you should each be
confronted with the possibiliy of death. Dads untimely death left you a widow at a young
age with children still at home.
But you were not finished with life. Five years later you married Dick Godar. Dad knew I
was pregnant in his final days - but it was Dick who took on the role of grandfather to
Elizabeth. The two of you were so happy as you travelled about and your children were
happy to see you enjoy the fruits of your labor. I know you didnt think you could bear it
when God called Dick home leaving you widowed again.
But then came Frank. My brothers tried to warn Frank not to eat the vegetable soup, if you
recall, implying that somehow prospective husbands needed to proceed with caution. Did
we actually joke about things like that? But Frank was undaunted. He came into a
ready-made family with seven children married to seven spouses with numerous
grandchildren. Just learrning the names would have scared off a less ambitious man - not
Frank. He relished the role of grandfather and rejoiced in the birth of each new one.
Frank has taught me lessons in love and commitment these past several months. No one
could have given you better care than Frank did. When I was with him, I never got the

could have given you better care than Frank did. When I was with him, I never got the
feeling that he did what he did out of a sense of obligation. He acted out of undying love
for you. It is an image I will carry with me always.
So now Virginia Rose Ryan Jones Godar Klug, we celebrate your life. I will not be able to
say at the end of my life that I touched the lives of two sisters and a brother, three
husbands, seven children and their spouses, seven stepchildren, fifteen grandchildren and
numerous stepgrandchildren and grreat grandchilren as well as neighbors, friends and
other relatives. No one will struggle with my obituary.
I know you see us all gathered here and that you are in Gods presence. Your legacy will
live on. We are filled with the gifts you have given us. And one day we will be with you
again. Oh, and by the way, weve got a deal. See you at Elizabeths graduation.
Love,
Kath
