Notes for META (METTA) ELIZABETH SCHLAUCH:
HISTORY OF CHARLEVOIX, MICHIGAN*:
Charlevoix County was part of the territory acquired in 1836 by the Treaty of Washington. The territory covered the Northwest area of the lower peninsula of Michigan and was known as "Michilimackinac". In 1837 when Michigan became a state, almost all of the vast territory of Saginaw Bay was designated the "Township of Michilmackinac" with its seat of government being on Mackinac Island.

In 1840, Michigan drew the boundaries for Charlevoix County; this territory was separated into several regions, with the region now known as Charlevoix County originally being known as "Keskkauko". Charlevoix County was renamed in 1843 after the French explorer, Pierre Francoix-Xavier de Charlevoix, who traveled the Great Lakes in seach of a passage to the Pacific.

Charlevoix County was officially organized as a county in 1869, taken from sections of Emmet, Otsego and Antrim Counties. Prior to 1869, there were only three organized townships in what is today Charlevoix County: Evangeline, Charlevoix and Eveline.

The first extensive settlement in the County was on Beaver Island, established in 1847 and founded by the controversial religious leader, James Strong, an elder of the Mormon Church. Strong formed one of Michigan's most successful religious communities on Beaver Island, and he was elected king of the "Kingdom of St. James" in 1850 where he ruled as a dictator. He was elected to the State Legislature by the group, but after his assassination in 1856, the colony disbanded.

East Jordan became the original County seat in 1885, but in the spring of 1886, the voters had it moved to Boyne City. In October, 1887, the courthouse was destroyed by fire. With much controversy from all communities, the County seat was moved to the City of Charlevoix where it remains today.

The County enjoys beautiful harbors, fine beaches, quaint resort towns and the very sizable Lake Charlevoix. The action in Charlevoix County includes hunting, fishing, mushroom picking, an apple festival, Charlevoix Venetion Week and some of Michigan's finest downhill skiing.
