The other day while Charles A. Gerard was rummaging through some old papers belonging to his father-in-law, the late JE Dunn, he ran across an old pay roll of Mounted Rangers, a company which served in the War of 1812 and of which Williamson Dunn was the Captain and Henry Ristine, father of the venerable Ben T. Ristine, was 2nd Lt.  Among the list of privates was the name Nathaniel Dunn, father of JE Dunn and grandfather of Mrs. Gerard. The company was recruited in the Southern part of the state, mostly in the vicinity of Madison. There is nothing on the roll to indicate where the company served or the length of time for which it was enlisted.  It is known that it was at Ft. Harrison as Lt. Henry Ristine was in command of the post for a time. The name most familiar to the readers of The Journal, however, is that of Ambrose Whitlock, whose certificate is attached as Paymaster. The following is a transcript of the roll:

Rev. Charles White, DD, President of Wabash College died at his residence in this city of apoplexy on Tuesday evening of this week Oct 29th. Aged about 66 years.  Mr. White was in the enjoyment of his usual good health up to the hour or moment of demise. Truly in the midst of life, we are in death.  The funeral will take place from the late residence of the deceased sometime during tomorrow (Friday) probably not before 2 o’clock p.m. The exact hour however will be designated by the ringing of church bells.

  • White, Charles W May 3, 1779 Sept 2, 1855 Linden (Madison) - there may even be a mix-up of the two Charles Whites or both may have been in the War of 1812 - this one was for sure
