The Powell School House Picnic – It was a typical June day with its “bird’s song and sweet sunshine,” and unlike the day it was held last year, when the clouds poured out torrents of rain on the uncrowned heads of the speakers, and caused the assemblage to rush pell mell to some other covering besides what nature afforded. There was not a cloud to mar its beauty and by 10 o’clock a merry crowd of students, teachers and their families were there with baskets, out from under whose snow cover peeped good things too numerous to mention. The meeting was called to order by acting president, JC Eddingfield, and the first on the programme was an address by Dr. Burroughs of Shannondale which was prefeced by an apology but was unnecessary as his stirring eloquence was appreciated by all. The next to speak was Prof. Hultz of Pawnee, a teacher of 20 years ago who seemed to think he got “caught in a net,” by following the rest onto the stand but proved equal to the occasion as h8is talk could not have been improved for its practical, excellent points. The speaking was interspersed by old time songs such as Bright Happy Days by the Ronk sisters, whose sweet voices are being heard outside their native hamlet. Then came intermission and dinner when all formality was laid aside and soon the tables were groaning ‘neath the burdens of a feast fit for a king and plentiful enough to have gathered the traditional 12 baskets of fragments when all were filled. Such a reunion of old teachers and pupils and sociability among all the participants is seldom seen. The afternoon programme was a splendid feature of the day and was spent in reminiscences, singing and such mutual enjoyment that even a little snake was lured from its hiding place much to the consternation of the ladies but its short life was soon trampled out in the confusion that followed Rev. Cornelius Airhart came next with an excellent talk and little Miss Jessie Yelton of Ladoga, convulsed her hearers with a declamation in her inimitable style. Short speeches followed by old time teachers, Dr. Johnson of Lizton, Miss White of Ladoga, Mrs. Scaggs and Mrs. Peterson of Mace and James Sandy of Advance, a pupil 50 years ago told of school days in the olden times. The programme closed with a song by a quartette of young ladies. This closed the picnic for this year but it is not a thing of the past. It has come to stay and an effort will be made to bring out something new each year, as Powell School House has sent on the sea of life many distinguished citizens. Among its number are teachers of science, editors, lawyers, doctors, preachers and there will be nothing lacking on the programme and the social feature is established. But joys are not without its griefs and there was a sad side as there always is at such reunions. Above the stand hung a beautiful memorial to the memory of Fred Gott, the teacher of last winter, whose noble young life needs no eulogy and whose lamented death is still fresh in the memory of all. And the old pioneers, who laid the foundation for this place of learning, like silent heroes have all bowed down to the grim warrior, death and lie sleeping the sleep that knows no waking. But as life’s changes come and go let’s keep our heart fires all aglow for old friends and new friends and true friends, all good friends together – EB

Walnut Township Elementary (active School)
- Teachers of Walnut Township Elementary. In his "Walnut Township" book, Dr. Arvin does not give the start up date of the school or even a picture. Dr. Arvin's listing covers the 1968-1969 through 1999-2000 school years. This is taking place in Southmont Schools, which began operation in the 1966-1967 School year. On the systems websites I do not find a history of the schools. His first listing of teachers is for the 1968-1969 School Year. He has marked a number of New Ross High School teachers as also working in the Elementary (see New Ross High School Teachers) which contained grades 1 thru 8. For the 1969-1970 school year it is the same. In 1970-1971 school year the teachers are combined as Walnut Township-New Ross School with grades 1-12. This was the last year for the high school as the 1971-1972 school year saw the begin of Southmont High School for the entire Southmont School District. Following this, Walnut Elementary became one of the operational elementary schools in the district and is still in service today (August 2020).

Watkins School or School # 3
Possibly known as Tiger Valley, not sure
- Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal 26 Feb 1897 p 8“Last Day of School at Watkins” – School closed at No. 3 Walnut Township Feb 18. School was taught by Conner Davidson of Whitesville and although this has been a difficult one to teach, the result of this term was an excellent one. To show their appreciation of the teacher a number of the patrons congregated at the school house on last Thursday with well filled baskets and spread a most tempting repast of choice delicacies. Too much cannot be said in praise of the teacher who is a young man of high moral character, fine ability and made a manly effort to make this school a success. If there has been any wrong done in the school this term there can be no reflection cast upon Mr. Davidson and the patrons are anxious to secure him for their teacher the succeeding term“Sleepy Hollow” news – Watkins school No. 3 has the second honor of raising an American flag in Walnut township. Flag staff 53’ in air. The patrons of Walnut Township as well as the scholars are lamenting over the short term made so on account of short funds to pay the teachers. It was stated in Whitesville items last week that our school No 3, closed Saturday. It was a mistake, for our school closed Thursday and quite a number of patrons gathered.
- Source: Crawfordsville Review 25 Feb 1893 p 6The case of Mrs. Warren, teacher of school No. 3 in Walnut township charged with no wielding the “gad” sufficiently to preserve the proper decorum, was heard before Supt. Zuck last Saturday. Mr. Zuck held that the evidence didn’t warrant the teacher losing her school but cautioned her to be more generous with the use of the switch in the future. Only the week before Elmer Hobson another teacher was prosecuted for whipping too much. Surely some people are very hard to please.
