What's New?
We started this page in August 2012. It lists, briefly, the changes we make to the Lawrence county site. While we're constantly making minor improvements and changes of a technical nature, we'll try to limit ourselves here to listing the additions and changes in content which might be of interest to the typical researcher. Please visit regularly to see what's happening. We'll list here changes we've made during the last 3 months or so, with the most recent updates first...
- 2016-11-06 – Updated the search index. Our site is re-indexed frequently to reflect all changes.
- 2016-11-06 – Today, Randi Richardson sent us this article for our collection of newspaper articles from, and about Lawrence county:
- July 6, 1897 – A Monon train wreck injures brakeman Pete Allen and kills two tramps.
- July 6, 1897 – A Monon train wreck injures brakeman Pete Allen and kills two tramps.
- July 2016 – Randi informs us that "the Rootsweb Archive Search Function is not working", so she will cease sending material to the county lists until it is up and running once again. We hope this problem will be corrected in the near future.
- 2016-06-27 – During the past few years, we've added hundreds of stories to our vast collection of newspaper articles from, and about, Lawrence county. Most of them were contributed by Randi Richardson, our "List Facilitator", who, every week or so, adds several new clippings to our collection.
This week, Randi transcribed and sent us some more clippings from more than a century ago:- July 27, 1900 – Louis Fidler killed in the Philippines,
- November 20, 1908 – Edward Cates marries Viola Brandon, and,
- November 24, 1908 – Chip Johnson dies.
- 2016-06-17 & 06-27 – Randi sent us excerpts of several pages of the Spice Valley township chapter of the 1914 History of Lawrence County which we didn't already have.
- 2016-05-22 – We made our first change to our surnames page in more than a year, adding the name and e-mail address of a Flinn researcher, Marcie Smith. Are you researching a particular surname, or do you have a web page dedicated to that surname? We'll be glad to add your name and address.
- March 2016 – Randi sent us biographies of the following persons,
- Michael N. Messick, and,
- Gilead P. Lee.
- 2016-02-27 – Today we started a collection of photos, some of them more than 100 years old, provided by Bruce Bledsaw. Please visit this photo album to see what you might know about the pictures.
- 2016-02-27 – We're experimenting with the colors of links in our web pages, trying to make the navigation of our site easier. Links will now appear IN RED; if you've already visited the page in question, they'll be IN BLUE.
- 2015-06-01 – We announced more than two months ago that "our county coordinator, Treva Peckham, informs us that she is busy transcribing information from several Bedford High School yearbooks, which will be added to our yearbook collection."
The first of these books is now available — the 1935 Bedford HS yearbook! Treva has supplied photos of the entire graduating class, and is still busy adding other information. Return often to check out this "work in progress"!
- 2015-02-18 – Today we added a collection of 28 photos, appearing to date back to the first half of the 20th century, which were sent to us by Debbie Jennings, who in turn received them from Maggie Neideigh. Some are "mystery photos", while others come with the names of various individuals. Please visit this photo album to see what you might know about the pictures.
- 2014-11-26 – Doug Terrell informs us that he has opened a Facebook group for descendants of Edmund Terrell, of Lawrence county. Click HERE to check it out!
- 2014-10-12 – We've added a new page for informing you of coming events which may be of interest to Lawrence county historians and genealogists, starting off with a Halloween-themed event in Oolitic, and a meeting of the South Indiana Genealogical Society in New Albany. We'll try to keep this page up to date. You can help by informing us of events in and near Lawrence county which are taking place in the near future.
- September 2014 – The "Lowery Meets Burgess" site which we formerly listed in our obituaries page seems to have disappeared from the world wide web. Does anybody know where they've gone? Can you recommend other sites for Lawrence county obituaries?
- 2014-08-21 – Today Randi sent us our oldest newspaper article yet – the 1830 story of a ship, carrying several Lawrence county residents, blowing up in Memphis, TN.
- 2014-08-08 – Listed The Southern Indiana Genealogical Society in our Indiana Links page. This society is an excellent source of information on several counties which are located just south of Lawrence county. We've all seen that our ancestors often moved back and forth between Lawrence and other nearby counties.
- 2014-06-06 – Today, we changed our search engine provider from Picosearch to FreeFind. After many years of service, Picosearch will soon become unavailable. Several neighboring Indiana county sites are also using FreeFind, and we hope it will meet our needs for Lawrence county. If you experience problems searching this web site, or have any questions about how to use the Search feature, please contact the Lawrence county webmaster.
- 2014-02-15 – Added a Find a Grave search box to the bottom of our alphabetical and townships cemeteries pages. See how you like it!
- 2013-07-25 – We've changed our contacts page to include the names, not only of our coordinator and webmaster, but of other frequent contributors like Connie and Randi. Instead of having these persons' e-mail addresses appear in many different pages, their addresses will appear in this single place. When you click on their name in an article, you will be taken to this contacts page to obtain their current e-mail address. This is an ongoing project, as there are hundreds of references to these regular contributors throughout our site.
If you would like to provide new information for our web site, correct misinformation, or report "technical difficulties", please contact the county coordinator, or her assistant.
