BARKER, Martha Jane Woody
Picture on front of a post card -- Back says: From: Martha J. Barker of Bolton Kansas to Jane Lindley "answer soon." Dated Oct 20 in 1920. Martha was born 7 November 1855 died almost exactly two years after sending this post card on 17 October 1922. Martha Jane Woody married Andrew Nelson Barker in Parke County (by Jacob Ratcliff) 20 January 1874. Andrew, born 10-20-1850 was the son of Thomas Barker and Sarah Louderback. His father was sick for some time and had a fairly large bill for that time within his estate. It is unknown what happened to Andrew (commonly known as A.N.) mother but she is not with them in the 1860 census. May have died in childbirth with A.N.'s one sister, Luella, or perhaps remarried. The two Barker children were raised by their grandfather, Joshua Barker, who probably passed away sometime between the 1870-80 census. This was probably also the time that Andrew and Martha Jane moved to Kansas, but may have been a bit later, as it is known their one son, Miles was born in Indiana whereas their twins, Fred and Frank who arrive 7 Nov 1892 were indeed born in Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas. They had at least 9 children and farmed their land together, Martha taking over after he passed away. The Barker family is noted for twins. At Barker reunions when this researcher was small, there would be twins wherever you looked. It was astonishing. So, add A.N. and Martha's to the list :) = kbz - thanks also to Martha Patterson for this super picture.
