McARTY

Robert Langford McARTY, son of Grant and Permelia McArty, was born May 18, 1852 and departed this life December 21, 1916, age 64 years, 7 months and 3 days.   August 16, 1877, he was married to Mary E. Owin, who died April 15, 1881.   This union was blessed with three children--Ared and Maud, who survive him and one child who died in infancy.  On September 7, 1887, he was married to Margaret Jane McCutchan and five children blessed this home -- William, Vawnie Esther, Martha Permelia, Kathryn Irene and Harold Ridpath.  All of these survive him except Martha, who past to the great beyond January 10, 1902.  Besides those mentioned his wife, four grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Sarah Carrico and a host of friends are left in bereavement.  After many weeks of intense suffering he quietly past away without a murmur, and we like to think of him now as being with his Master.  While he never affiliated with any particular church he lived up to his belief that the greatest work he could do his Master was thru service to his fellow man.  He was a good husband and father, ever keeping the pleasures and comforts of his family in mind, and a helpful neighbor.  His great assuming nature won for him the friendship and respect of all with whom he came in contact.  His high moral standard and industrious and unselfish habits depict his greatest characteristics.  While at present it seem shard to bear, yet it is a comfort to know that he is at last released from the cares and suffering of earthly life and entered into the glorious peace that passeth all understanding.  - Rockville Tribune, December 1916 --

Lewis McMasters of Montezuma, better known in Newport as "Babe" was instantly killed Wednesday noon near the home of Luther Manwaring, north of West Union, Parke County, when a chain broke around a load of logs causing the pole to hit him on the head, scalping him.  He was hauling logs from the Sugar Creek bottoms and was using a stump puller in loading them. It was reported that he had a chain and pole around the log to hold it on the wagon, when the chain broke, letting the pole fly back with great force striking him on the head, knocking the top of his head off.  The body was taken to Montezuma where the coroner held an inquest and rendered a verdict of accidental death.  "Babe" McMasters, a son of Solomon McMasters, had resided in the Sugar Creek neighborhood for a number of years, and during his younger days was a lover of baseball. He was a captain and manager of the Sugar Creek team and whenever he had an open date, a game could be had on a few minutes notice by notifying the Sugar Creek manager. John, the 17-year-old son of Jesse McMULLEN, of Marshall, was instantly killed at the Sand Creek crossing on the Van on Wed. morning when the northbound passenger struck the auto which he was driving.  His sister, Mary, aged 10, had her leg broken.  Trainmen think that the engine stalled.  The boy's neck, back and both arms were broken and head bruised.  The auto was badly wrecked. Mr. McMullen is well known here, having formerly lived in this community and much sympathy is expressed for his  misfortune. The passenger took the body of the boy back to Rockville, and the girl was taken to St. Anthony hospital at Terre Haute.  - Waveland Independent, May 21, 1920

The following details of the accident which cost the life of Jesse McMULLEN's son is taken from the Marshall News -- The children were returning home from a visit with their aunt, Mrs. Cecil Neet and as it is a bad crossing at this place, it is presumed that they did not see or hear the approaching train and drove upon the track in front of it.  The automobile, which was a Doge was completely demolished.  It was struck in the middle and carried about 18 feet and then pitched to the side of the track, turning over 2 times and then assumed its right position.  When members of the train crew and passengers reached the spot they found John's lifeless body lying in the wreckage near the left fender, his hands still grasping the steering wheel.  Mary was lying near the right fender and at that time was thought to be dead.  Both were placed on the train taken to Rockville.  When it was discovered that the little girl was still alive, she was rushed to the Union hospital at Terre Haute. On examination there, it was found that her injuries are not as serious as they were thought to be at first and she will recover.  Both bones of the lower leg were broken but she was not cut or mutilated.  She regained consciousness soon after reaching the hospital and talked to her father.  John's body was taken to the Skelton undertaking room at Rockville where Coroner Moris held an inquest.  He found that the boy's back, neck and both arms were broken and his chest badly crushed.   There was a cut on the forehead but otherwise he was not cut of mutilated.  Fun. services will be held at the Marshall Baptist church this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock.  - Waveland Independent, May 25, 1900
