Mrs. Margaret E. AARONS of Brazil, age 91, died in the Wallace Nursing Center at Terre Haute, Tuesday morning, August 1.  She was a member of the Rosedale Baptist Church and was formerly employed at the Gibault School for Boys, Terre Haute.  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Martin of Rosedale and Mrs. Ester Buck of RR 5, Brazil; a sister, Mrs. Lou Wells of Brazil; five grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 8 gr. gr. grandchildren.  Fun. services were held at the Lawson Funeral Home in Brazil, Sat. afternoon, with rev. James Buck officiating, assisted by Rev. William Grimes.  burial was in Memory Garden Cemetery. - Rockville Republican August 7, 1972

ACKER

Leonard Edwin ACKER was born in Martinsburg, Pa March 3, 1836 and passed away at Uniontown, Ohio January 12, 1918 at the ripe age of 81 years, 10 months and 9 days.  He was a veteran of the Civil War, being 1st Lt in Co I, 149th Reg IVI and belonged to Buckley Post, GAR of Akron, Ohio. He removed to Ohio at a very early age, where he remained until about 19 years of age, when he removed to Indiana, near Portland Mills, where he taught school for several years.  he afterwards was engaged in the mercantile business at Portland Mills, Hollandsburg and Judson, Indiana, where he became well known.  In later years he moved to Waveland, where he engaged in the insurance business and the practice of law.  He was a member of the Montgomery Co. bar at the time of his decease.  He became a member of the Masonic Order at Judson and at the time of death was a member of Waveland Lodge No 300 F&AM.  He was also an honorary member of the IOOF Lodge at this place.  He has been a faithful and consistent member of the Christian church for many years, formerly being an Elder of the church of this place, and at his decease an Elder of the Christian church at Canton, Ohio. He was married to Cyrena Vandever of Portland Mills on Nov 10, 1859 and to this union 7 children were born: Mary Newlin of Bloomingdale; Mort Acker of Onalaskia, TX; Elizabeth Norcross of Terre Haute; Lulu Lough and Laila Rosebaum of this place; Maude Milligan of Baton Rouge LA; and James Acker who preceded him in death in 1885. His wife, Cyrena died in 1902.  For the past 15 years he has lived at Uniontown Ohio where he married Margaret Francke in September 1904 and she, with the above children, survive. A long and useful life is this ended.  Fun. services. were held at the Masonic Hall on Fri. aft. at 2:30. Rev. OS Stewart preached the fun. sermon and Judge Jere West conducted the Masonic ceremonies. Internment. at Maple Ridge. ADAMS

Albert Thomas Adams, 92 years old, passed away at 3:30 o'clock last Thursday afternoon at the residence three miles east of Rosedale.  Mr. Adams was born June 21, 1850 in Jessup, Parke County, Indiana to William C. Adams and Mary (Sale) Adams. He was a farmer by occupation and lived his entire life in Parke County.   Surviving are three sons; Harry and Jesse Adams of Rosedale and Charles Adams of Indianapolis; three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Mooter of Sandford, Mrs. Dolly Staggs of Tangier and Mrs. Della Thorpe of Oklahoma, and several grandchild, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Victor Lawrence Adams and two daughters, Essie Grace Adams and Mary Magdeline Adams.  Last rites were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Friendly Grove Baptist church, with the Rev. Raymond Rissler in charge. Burial was in Adams Cemetery, Forks of the Creek. – shared by Jimmy Gillis

Alfred Adams died at his home in Rockville last Saturday morning, age about forty years.  The funeral was held at the residence on Monday morning, by RE. R. W. Miss Alice M. Adams of Rockville, 79 years old, died at 10:15 o'clock Tuesday morning at the Allen nursing home in Montezuma following an extended illness. She was a member of the Rockville Methodist church.  Surviving are a brother, Ed Adams of Chicago, and a number of nieces and nephews.  The body was taken to the Barnes mortuary where funeral services were today (Thursday)at 2 o'clock. MONTEZUMA— Mrs. Annabess Snodgrass Adams, 60, of Rt. 1, Montezuma, died ate Thursday even at her home. She was a member of Webster Groves Presbyterian Church of near St. Louis and the Unity Church of Indianapolis. She was born April 10, 1910, daughter of Walter and Anza Williams Snodgrass. Surviving are her husband, Frank Adams; a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Street of Indianapolis, and a granddaughter, Woodruff Street of Indianapolis. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Barnes Mortuary in Rockville. Charles Roth will officiate. Mrs. Dora Adams died at her home E. of town Mon. morning.  She had been in failing health for sometime.  She took to her bed two weeks ago and failed rapidly from that time.  her death was due to poison from a goiter of several years standing.  Her husband, David Adams, died nearly 24 years ago.  She leaves two sons, Claude Adams of Chicago and Frank Adams, with whom she resided at the old home place and three grandchildren.  Mrs. Adams was in her 67th year.  She was very industrious and a kind neighbor and an earnest worker in the Bethany Presbyterian Church.  So great was her interest in the missionary work she had been called the "Mother of the Missionary Society."  Three of her brothers, Dr. James Cannon of South Bend and John and A. I. Cannon of this place were with her during her sickness.  Her sister, Mrs. Mort Ware of Florida, was unable to be here, or either of her other brothers.  For several years she tenderly cared for her niece, Mrs. Phronia Dooley who was left an orphan when quite young and between them existed the closest tie of love.  Her funeral will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Marshall Wed. a.m. at 10:30, conducted by Rev. Mrs. Edna, wife of William ADAMS, of the Forks of the Creek, died Wednesday morning of childbed fever, aged about 19 years. She was ill eight days. Deceased was a daughter of Lafayette Barnes and had been married about two years. She was laid to rest in the Forks of the Creek Cemetery."  -  Rockville Republican, July 3, 1889

Mrs. Martha Kathryn Adams, 84 years old, died at 8:30 o'clock Saturday morning at the home northeast of Rosedale.  She is survived by her husband, Albert; three sons, Harry and Jesse C. Adams of Rosedale and Charles Adams of Indianapolis; three daughters, Mrs. Della Thorpe of Oklahoma, Mrs. Bessie Mooter of Sandford and Mrs. Dollie Staggs of Rockville; and also several grandchildren.  Martha Kathryn Adams was born on March 28, 1854 in Parke County, Indiana to William P. Lewis and Sarah Garret. On December 21, 1873 she was united in marriage to Albert Thomas Adams. She was a resident of Parke County, India her entire life.  Besides her parents, Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by two daughters, Essie Grace Adams and Mary Magdalene (Adams) Webster; and one son, Lawrence Victor Adams.  The body was taken to the Cox-Williams Funeral Home and later returned to the residence where funeral services were held Monday afternoon. Mary ADAMS, nee Sale died at her residence in Parke County July 20, 1888 (possible 29th - smudge on paper) after an illness of a few days.  The deceased was born in mercer County Kentucky November 20, 1812.  Moved with her parents to Indiana in 1822 (possibly 32 smudged) and settled on a farm near Jessup, now owned by Elias Adams.  She was married to William Adams April 2, 1830. He died January 25, 1861.  She was the oldest of a family of several children of whom only two are left.  She has borne the trials of a pioneer life.  Of her 11 children six have gone before.  She leaves 5 children, 4 sons and one daughter, 28 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends to mourn her loss.  Her children are all married and living near her home, except one son, Reuben who lives in Sedgwick County, Kansas.  A telegram was sent to him and he started immediately and reached her.... (Smudged) that remains of the mother at the Friday Grove Church where the funeral services were conducted by Rev M. S. Yowel.  She united with the Friendly Grove Church 1871 having been converted about 35 years before and has since lived a pious and exemplary life.  She was a kind and affectionate mother and good neighbor.  Also a successful business woman.  She was interred in the Jessup cemetery July 25 followed by a large congregation of relatives and friends - Eva Adams.  - Rockville Republican, August-8-1888

"MRS. MARY ADAMS" - Mary Sale, died at her residence in Parke County, July 22, 1888, after an illness of a few days.  The deceased was born in Mercer county, Kentucky, November 29, 1812, moved with her parents to Indiana in 1822 and settled on a farm near Jessup, now owned by Elias Adams; married to William Adams April 8, 1830, and he died January 25, 1861.  She was the oldest of a family of several children and only two are left. She was borne the trials of pioneer life. Of her eleven children, six had gone before. She leaves five children, four sons and one daughter, twenty-eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends to mourn her loss, but our loss is her eternal gain. A telegram was sent to him and he started immediately, and reached here in time to meet the remains of his mother at Friendly Grove church, where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. S. BELLMORE – Mrs. Mary Adams, 81, of Bellmore, died Wednesday in Castle-Manor Nursing Home at Rockville. She was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and its Ladies Aid, Parke County Senior Citizens and American Association of Retired Persons. Mrs. Adams was born at Hume, Ill., on Dec. 16, 1894, a daughter of John and Julia Bolen. She married Harvey L. Adams on Oct. 7, 1915. Surviving are three daughters, Eileen Everhart of Benton Harbor, Mich., Wilma Mellemon of Terre Haute and Doris Jean Hutchens of Thorntown; two sons, John and Bert both of Rockville; a brother, Grant Bolen of Mishawaka; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Butler Funeral Home at Rockville with the Rev. Albert Williams officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. ROCKVILLE – Richard J. Adams, 74, a retired teacher, died Sunday night in Veterans Hospital at Indianapolis. Mr. Adams had been a teacher 38 years, working mostly in elementary schools. He was a member of Friendly Grove Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War I. He was born in Parke County on May 23, 1899, a son of Silas V. and Nancy Hawkins Adams. He was married to Esther Beauchamp on Feb. 10, 1923. She survives. Also surviving are a son, William E. of North Augusta, S.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Mary) Newlin of Lafayette and Mrs. Walter C. (Mary Ruth) Johnson of Quincy; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Pefley of Rosedale; three brothers, Ared M. Adams of Indianapolis, Noel L. of Carmel and Edgar E. of San Diego, and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and three granddaughters. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Tudor Funeral Home here with the Rev. John Hopkins officiating. ROCKVILLE, Ind. (CNS) – Mrs. Sylvia Adams, 83, a native of Parke County, died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey, Ill. She was born Feb. 27, 1891, a daughter of Dosier and Laura Stultz Cox. She was a charter member of the Southern Baptist Church at Greenville, Ill., where she formerly resided.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Adams, on June 12, 1971. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Elmer Cox. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marietta Turner of Dongola, Ill., and Mrs. Lillian Peters of Matteson, Ill.; a son, Wilbert of Harvey, Ill.; a brother, William Cox of Kego Harbor, Mich.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Butler Funeral Home. The Rev. John E. Hopkins will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Rebecca Lynn Adkins, 13-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Adkins of Indianapolis, formerly of Parke County, died here Thursday afternoon. Besides the parents, surviving are the grandmothers, Mrs. Opal Herron of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Goldie Pruett of Brazil. AIKMAN

ROCKVILLE - Robert P. Aikman, 87, of 221 S. Lincoln Road, died at 5:28 a. m. today in Castle-Shannon Nursing Home at Rockville. He had farmed in t he Dana area for 25 years before retiring in 1972. Mr. Aikman was a 50-year member of Asbury Masonic Lodge 320; Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis; life member of Zora Shrine of Terre Haute; Parke County Low 12 Club; and Half-Century Club of Clinton. Born Sept. 26, 1887, he was a son of Hen ry Montford and Emma Ford Aikman. Surviving are a son, Joe of Marshal l; a granddaughter, Miss Patricia Joan Aikman of Indianapolis; and a niece, Mrs. Estelle Miller of Gas City. His wife, Emma, died in 1962. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Tudor-Herrick Memorial Chap el at Rockville with the Rev. James O. Trousdale officiating. Burial will be in Toronto Cemetery at Dana. Services Held For Carl Akers  - CARL AKERS, 81, of Route 4, Rockville, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday at his residence.  The retired farmer was born on November 27, 1900, in Tennessee, to William and Selina Mitchell Akers.  He was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church and Parke County Farm Bureau.  On June 4, 1921, he married Catherine Spence, who survives.  Other survivors include daughters, Jeane Mathas of Montezuma, and Margaret Bishopink of Homewood, IL; one son, Tom of Rockville; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roy of Dallas, OR.  Services were conducted at 10 a.m. today at Butler Funeral Home by Rev. Luke AKERS, a well known citizen of Parke Co and youngest son of Henry and Sarah Akers was born October 13, 1842 near New Discovery and lived in this county during his entire life.  He was united in marriage to Lovina Martin May 1, 1867.  To this union were born 13 children.  He departed this life at his home near Bellmore, May 2, 1911 at the age of 68 years 6 months and 19 days.  He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and 11 children; Mrs. Mary Budd; Mrs. Martha Spencer; Charles and William Akers; Mrs. Octavia Scott; John Akers; Mrs. Minnie Collings of Terre Haute; Henry, George and Marion Akers and Mrs. Edna Alexander; 26 grandchildren and one brother John of Sullivan with many other relatives and friends.  Two infants, one sister, one brother and four grandchildren have preceded him in death.  Tuesday afternoon he was found lying on  e floor, dead, nearby where he had sat down to rest.  This is a link in the family circle broken, leaving sad and lonely the home that was once bright by his presence.  While he suffered for the pat few years he was patient, and said he was ready to answer the call of one who doeth all things well.  Vain were the life we may part with tomorrow; if tears were our birthright and death our end; But Jesus has cheered the dark valley of sorrow; And Bade us immortals to Heave ascend.  funeral by Ray Collings at Mt. Mrs. Lovina Akers, 84, died Sunday evening at her home just South of Bellmore after an illness of two weeks.  The daughter of a prominent pioneer family, she was b. and spent her entire life in Union Twp.  She was one of the oldest and best loved women of the community.  She was the mother of 13 children; five sons and five daughters, all living in or near Bellmore survive her.  The sons are: Charles, John, Henry, George and Marion.  The daughters are: Mrs. Mary Budd, who lived with her mother; Mrs. Martha Spencer, Mrs. Tavia Scott; Mrs. Minnie Collings and Mrs. Edna Alexander.  There are 30 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.  She was a lifelong member of the United Brethren Church.  Funeral services were conducted at the Mt. Moriah Church Wed. at 10:30 a.m.  The Rev. A. F. Egnew officiating.  Interment was in Mt. Moriah. ROCKVILLE – Marion Akers, 33, a retired farmer and native of Parke County, died at 7 p.m. Thursday in Vermillion County Hospital at Clinton. He was born June 21, 1885 to Luke and Lavina Martin Akers. His wife, Lavina May, died in 1954. Surviving are three sons, Owen of Rt. 1, Rockville, Raymond of Granger and Darrel of Beaumont, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Edna Alexander of Waveland, and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Butler Funeral Home, Rev. James O. Trousdale officiating, with burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Marion AKERS of Judson RR, age 83, died in the hospital at Clinton, Thurs evening, January 30.  He was b. in Parke County, June 21, 1885, the son of Luke & Lavine Martin Akers. He was a retired farmer. AKINS

Wilber Akins was born at Rockville May 2, 1885. He united with the UB Church at age 19. He remained a member of this congregation to the time of his death. For some time he has showed special delight in that old hymn "Near My God to Thee," and has been doing special reading and study in the New Testament. This is the second time death has visited this family of 10, his father having died 9 years ago next January.  He leaves a mother stepfather, two brothers, five sisters and other relatives with many friends to mourn their loss. After a brief illness death came unexpectedly on the morning of Dec 27 and he passed peacefully into the beyond, at age 25 years 3 months 5 days. The deceased was a member of the Waveland Lodge of Odd Fellows, having been initiated January 6, 1908.  He was a faithful attendant when able and always exemplified the principles of the order in his conduct. He was also a member of the local Woodmen Camp in which he carried  a policy for $1,000. Funeral services at the home on Saturday morning were conducted by Rev. J C Brengle, followed by the IOOF burial service. the body was taken to Sand Creek for burial. Pallbearers from the IOOF and MW of A accompanied the body. Mary Eliz. Alden of Rockville, age 84, died at Castle Shannon Nursing Home, Tues Even, November 16. She was b. in Parke County, November 25, 1886 the daughter of Thomas K. and Clara Belle Ralston Smith. She was a member of Memorial United Presbyterian Church and had served on its board of trustees. She was also past president of the American Legion Aux and a member of the Rockville Woman's Club an Estabrook Chapter DAR. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy and a daughter, Mrs. Virginia McFaddin. Surviving are a son, John T. of Rockville, a brother, Lawrence K. Smith of Bloomingdale RR, five grandchildren, Mrs. Alice McFaddin Huber of Winston Salem, NC; Mrs. Judith McFadding Enck of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Mrs. Eliz. Alden Turecky of Dallas, TX, Capt. Mrs. Cora M. ALEXANDER of 417 South College, Rockville, age 91, died at the Parke County Nursing Home early Saturday morning, September 11. She was born in Parke County, May 28, 1885, the daughter of Henry and Lily Millemon Sutton. She was a member of the Parkeville Christian Church.  Surviving are a granddaughter, Mrs. Doris Ann Ensey of Terre Haute, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Barnes Mortuary this (Monday) afternoon. WAVELAND – Edna H. Alexander, 85, died Thursday in her home here. She was a Parke County native, born Nov. 20, 1887 to Luke and Laviana Akers, and was educated in the Bellmore schools. She married William Alexander on Sept. 13, 1908 at Bellmore. Mrs. Alexander was a member of the EUB Church at Otterbein. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Russell (Doris) White of Waveland, and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband and two sons preceded Mrs. Alexander in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in Machledt & Servies Funeral Home here, with the Rev. Lester Niles officiating and burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. James Alexander, retired merchant of Marshall, Ind, was returning home from a rally at Rockville, when his buggy collided with a double team and he was instantly killed. James Alexander, of Marshall, was killed in an accident while returning from the Republican rally last Saturday. He was driving behind a hack containing Dan and John Keller with a party from northern Parke and southern Fountain. It was said that the two vehicles were being driven very fast, Alexander trying to pass the Kellers, and the later trying to maintain their lead. At the bend of the road this side of Marshall, both rigs crashed into each other. Mr. Alexander and Alex Connerly were thrown forward under the horses of the other outfit. Alexander’s skull was crushed, and he died almost immediately. Connerly was badly hurt. The accident is deplored by all, and no particular blame is attached to anybody for the unfortunate affair - Rockville Tribune 29 Oct 1896

John S. ALEXANDER died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Moore in Milligan March 8.  Funeral services at Union Chapel were conducted by Rev. EL Day. Burial in cemetery adjoining. Mr. Alexander was born in Lawrence co, May 31, 1843. He married Mary E. Greene, who survives him.  There was seven children, all of whom were present at the funeral.  He served throughout the Civil War in 18th &67th Regts. William ALEXANDER, 75 years old, retired Marshall businessman died here Tuesday about 9 o'clock at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Allen Hadley. He had been ill with heart disease for months.  Born Aug 19, 1865 in Parke Co, the s/o Robert & Hannah Alexander, he was united in married to Rose Beeson in 1892, the wife preceding him in death five years ago.  Mr. Alexander was a member of the Marshall Baptist church. Besides the daughter, two grandchildren survive.  Funeral services will be held at the Baptist a church here at two o'clock Thursday afternoon with the Rev. Paul Shults officiating. Mrs. William ALEXANDER, age 64, died at her home in Marshall at 6 o'clock Friday morning after a short illness.   Surviving are the husband, one daughter, Mrs. Allan Hadley, four sisters and two brothers. The funeral was held in the Baptist church, Marshall, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock Rev. Reagen of Sheridan officiating. Burial in Poplar Grove.  Mrs. William Alexander, age 64, died at the home here, Friday evening after a few days illness.   Funeral services were held from the Baptist church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Lindley Reagen of Sheridan assisted by Austin Elmore, Ora Newlin, accompanied by Miss Louise Teague, sang "Face to Face".  Pall bearers were Hubert and Charles Roy Beeson, Stephen Barker, John Clay, George Broderick and homer Fisher. Bearers of the flowers were Mrs. Kenneth Coffin, Mrs. Frank Hall, Mrs. Fred White, Mrs. John Clay, Mrs. Guy Lewis, Mrs. Homer Fisher, Mrs. Roscoe Kendall and Miss Agatha Beeson. bur. was made at Poplar Grove cemetery. She is survived by the husband, one daughter, Mrs. Leo Hadley and two grandchildren, Billy & Dorothy Hadley; four sisters, Mrs. Ewing Chapman of Rockville; Mrs. Henry McCune of Terre Haute, Mrs. Sam Barker and Miss Lula Beeson of Marshall; three brothers, John Beeson of Crawfordsville and William and Harry Beeson of this place.  - Unknown newspaper

“The body of Ed. ALEXANDER, who died in his home in New York City Thursday, arrived at the Barnes mortuary, Friday afternoon. Mr. Alexander was 70 years old and was born near Judson, the son of William and Laura Barnes Alexander. In his youth, he lived in Rockville and was one of the most popular and keenest witted young men of his generation. He left Parke County 40 years ago and has lived in New York City for many years.  Surviving are the widow, Dorothy and one sister, Mrs. Bess Steele of New York, a niece and a nephew.  Rev. Jesse Squires conducted the funeral in the Barnes chapel at 1 o’clock, Sunday afternoon. Miss Mary Brown played a program of organ music. ROCKVILLE -- Gerald Allee, 61, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday in his home at 211 R. Ohio St. here after an illness of three years.  Mr. Allee has been owner and operator of Allee and Son Plumbing and Heating Co. here for the past 10 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church here and a former member of Plumber's and Fitter's Local No. 330 at Kokomo.  A native of Cayuga, he was born July 8, 1907, a son of Roy and Mary Lewis Allee. He was married April 15, 1936, to Mildred Thatcher.  Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Stuber of Kokomo; three sons, Joseph and LeRoy, both of Rockville, and Michael of Venice, Fla.; a brother, Robert of Cayuga, and nine grandchildren.  Funeral mass will be said at 8 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church here with Father Lawrence Moran officiating. Burial will be in Thomas Cemetery near Newport. Friends may pay respects at Tudor Funeral Home in Rockville after 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7:30 Sunday evening

ALLEN

Chester "Gene" Allen, 79, of Cloverdale passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 at Owen Valley Health Campus in Spencer.   He was born Jan. 8, 1929 in Parke County. He was married to Rita Sullivan Allen   Mr. Allen was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the United Methodist Church. He was retired from Lone Star Industries.   Survivors include his wife; two children, Philip Allen and wife Kim of Wawaka and Debra Mitchell and husband Duane of Franklin; brother Sam Allen and wife Karen of Bell Union; three sisters-in-law, Kay Sullivan Oliphant of Bloomfield, Vera Sullivan Cox of Greencastle and Virginia Allen of Plainfield; and six grandchildren.   He was preceded in death by his parents and several other family members.   Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28 at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Paul Fulp officiating. Burial will be at Newark Cemetry in Solsberry. Calling will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

"Died at the residence of Henry Roach, near Cayuga, Fountain County, IN February 7, 1875,  Mrs. Elizabeth Summers ALLEN in the 84th year of her age.  Mrs. Allen was b. in Augusta Co VA Nov 5, 1791.  She was married in Rupell (sic -- note from Karen Zach -- I assume this is Russell) Co VA where she resided until 1820 when she moved to Morgan County, Kentucky.  She removed with her husband in November 1827 (ed. 1837?) to Fountain County, this state and settled on the farm where she died.  She had been for nearly 60 years a member of the Presbyterian (Predestinarian?) Church being united with the church in Va.  She was an industrious pioneer, a devoted mother, an ardent and zealous Christian and will be missed by and mourned by her many friends.  "Though to the grave her form hath gone, they weep, but angels shout with joy to welcome her to God in Heaven."  - Clipping from the bible of Nancy Allen Gailey  -Thanks to Allen Armstrong for this.

Mrs. Paul ALLEN, aged 58 died January 27. She was born January 20, 1879 the daughter of J. K. (James) and Margaret Bain Harbison.  She is survived by her husband Paul Allen, a daughter, Margaret Allen, a sister Mrs. OA Webster, brothers, Bert, Perry, Charles, a brother Alfred preceded her in death. Russellville News July 8, 1960 - Edith Reeder Allen, 75, died Wednesday in a nursing home in Mecca, Indiana. For many years she was a resident of Anderson Street in Greencastle.  She was born July 14, 1884, daughter of Silas Harlan and Wealthy Blake Reeder.  Survivors are a sister Mary M. Gross of Judson, a brother Roy B. Reeder, Terre Haute. Her husband Charles preceded her in death.  Russellville News August 11, 1927 - The body of Edgar G. ALLEN who died in Indianapolis was brought to Russellville Wednesday for burial in the Russellville Cemetery. 

Ida May Allen, widow of Burgess F. Allen was born November 17, 1871 in Benton County, Indiana and died at her home near Russellville Indiana on August 8, 1936 age 64 years 8 months 21 days. She was the daughter of Isaac and Sarah F. Lloyd.  When she was about 5 she moved with her parents to Parke County, Indiana. On 3 April 1895 she married Burgess F. Allen to this union were born two children Joseph Lloyd Allen and Mildred Allen Johnston. Survivors besides the two children are one granddaughter Marian Johnston and 3 brothers John A, EG and JE Lloyd.  Her husband died in 1905.  Burial in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis  - Russellville News August 14, 1936

James A. Allen died at Indianapolis, yesterday morning at 11 o’clock. As stated in the Tribune last week, Mr. Allen went to the Deaconess hospital for treatment. It was hoped that the special attention his case might receive would prolong his life, and for a few days he seemed to improve. Last week, however, his son, J. Edgar Allen, received word that there was no possibility his father would recover. James H. ALLEN, son of William and Mary Ellis Allen was born near Browns Valley March 13, 1854 and died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Jasper L. Ricke at Marshall, January 6, 1932 aged 77 years 9 months 23 days. He spent his entire life with the exception of a few years spent in Iowa in the Montgomery County area near Browns Valley.  He married November 5, 1874 Mary Alice GALEY. Survivors are the wife, 3 daughters, Mrs. JL Rice of Marshall, Mrs. Maurice Seybold and Mrs. Robert Grimes of Russellville, 10 grandchildren and two greats. He was the last of his family. He was preceded in death by a son Walter who died in infancy, his parents, one sister Mrs. William Layne and a half brother, John Davis. Paul ALLEN, of near Russellville died Monday October 4 at Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville, Indiana. He was born January 12, 1868. He was the son of Robert and Mary E. Allen.  He was married to Zora Harbison.  She preceded him in death.  Survivors are a daughter, Margaret Allen, two sisters, Mrs. Jesse Young of Greencastle and Miss Elsie Allen of LaPorte. Zora ALLEN accidentally Shot -- Zora, the 19-year-old son of M/M James Allen, who live near the Fisher school house, accidentally shot himself on Friday morning with fatal effect.  He and two brothers were cutting wood, and had taken a 22 rifle along to shoot rabbits.  The rifle was discharged with young Allen was laying it down.  The bullet entered at the point of the breast bone and probably passed thru the heart, as death was almost instantaneous.  Funeral services at the Byron Wesleyan M. Samuel Allison, veteran Parke county farmer, died at 11 O’clock last night at his home two miles northwest of Carbon of paralysis at the age of 77 years, seven months, and four days. The deceased has lived in that vicinity for many years.  He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Rachel Allison, and a daughter, Mrs. Lottie Chambers, of Fulton, Ky.; also, a granddaughter, Mrs. Opal Sanderson, of Terre Haute, and two brothers, William Allison of Carbon and Daniel Allison, of Linton.  The funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Ella Jane AMES daughter of Perry & Telitha Ann Harmless was born Aug 1, 1880 near Mansfield Indiana passed this life, Sept 11, 1939 at the age of 59 years, 1 month and 11 days.  Ella spent her girlhood days in this vicinity and received her education in the Mansfield school.  On Oct. 28, 1900 she was  united in marriage to John T. Ames, son of Warner and Martha Ames of Carbon.  To this union were born three children.  Ella and her good husband were permitted to live together only a short period of 14 years, he having preceded her in death June 23, 1914 leaving her the responsibility of rearing and educating her children which, with the aid of her father and mother she did very capably.  In the year 1927, after the passing of her father, she purchased the home place where the last 12 years she has very capably managed and carried on her farming and feeding operations.  Ella was a great lover of outdoor life and nature; this afforded her much pleasure. Being a great lover of her home she spent most of her time there.  Ella was always interested and willing to do anything that would better it and her community.  Ella was a member of the  Mansfield Needle club taking an active part in it and any social activity in her community.  Although she had not publicly expressed herself, she always believed in the teaching of the Predestinarian Baptists.  The last 6 months of her life, her health began to fall but she bore her illness bravely.  All that loving hands could do for her was done but all in vain.  God in His infinite wisdom saw fit to take her to the better land.  She leaves to mourn their loss three children, Arthur C of Indianapolis, Cleo W. of Mansfield and Mary Marea at home; two grandchildren, Maryland and Warren Ames; two daughters-in-law, one sister, Mrs. Vallie Strange and two brothers, Hugh and Guy E. Harmless also a host of relatives and friends. Rev. WP Noble preached the funeral sermon and Mrs. Walter Martin and Mrs. Frank Moore sang.  Flower bearers were the following nieces and nephews: Jim McHargue; Charles Seybold, Fred Martin, Dick Smith, Brint Moore and Lenn Reeves.  - Unknown newspaper

Arthur C. AMES, age 71, died Sun, April 23, at his home near Greencastle.  He was a native of Parke Co, the son of Ella Jane Harmless and John T. Faye Anderson of Tallahassee, Florida, formerly of Rockville, age 98, died Wednesday evening, July 7, at her home.  She was born in Parke County , 18 May 1884, the daughter of Homer and Martha Boyd Lang.  She was married in 1909 to James S. Anderson, who died in 1963.  Mrs. Anderson was a member of Rockville Christian Church.  Survivors include two daughters, Frances Thomas of Tallahassee and Helen Clarke of Jamestown , Rhode Island ; a son, Carl of St. Petersburg , Florida ; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  There are also several nieces and nephews in the local area.  Funeral services were held this afternoon [Monday] at Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Died August 2nd after a long and painful illness at her home, near Rockville Mrs. H. H. ANDERSON aged 75 years 3 months 27 days.  Mrs. Melinda Allen Anderson born in Shelby County Kentucky April 5, 1813; in 1829 came to this county with her widowed mother. They settled on the farm now owned by Allen McMurtry in the Bethany neighborhood.  December 27, 1836 she married H. H. Anderson and for about 50 years they have lived on the farm north of town where she died.  Mrs. Anderson was the mother of 8 children, two of whom die din infancy.  Two daughters died after reaching maturity. There are living 3 sons and 2 grandchildren.  One daughter and 8 grandchildren are living in Tenn. For nearly 56 years she was a member of Bethany Church having united with it soon after its organization.  The funeral services largely attended were conducted Friday at 4 o'clock by Rev. J. E. Kearns at the family residence assisted by Rev. J. R. Wood.  Interment in the Rockville cemetery.  Mrs. Anderson has been sick a long time and suffered greatly.  The exact nature of her disease is not understood. Ruth ANDERSON, 60, of Marshall died at 1 a.m. Monday at the Robert Long Hospital, Indianapolis. She was born Oct 29, 1896. Mrs. Anderson was a past worthy matron of the Marshall Chapter of the OES. Surviving are the husband, Frank; four brothers, Donald Coffin of Dixon, Ill; Kenneth Coffin of Kampbell, California; Jack Coffin of Bloomingdale and Gene Coffin of Terre Haute; and one sister, Sibyl Van Voorhees of Indianapolis.  ROCKVILLE, Ind. (CNS) — Mrs. Katie Belle Andrew, 85, of Rockville and formerly of Mecca, died at 1:45 p.m. yesterday (May 6, 1969) en route to the Vermillion County Hospital in Clinton. - Crawfordsville Journal Review, 07-May-1969.  Born May 4, 1884 in Lena, she was the daughter of Edward and Jane King Mason. ANGELMYER

A head-on collision of two automobiles resulted in the deaths of 3 young persons and serious injuries to five others, Friday night about 11:30 one-half miles west of Rockville on US 36. Those instantly killed in the crash were Larry WILSON 16 driver of one of the cars; Gary ANGELMEYER 16 a passenger with Wilson and Nancy DAVIS, 14 a passenger in the other car. Wilson and Anglemyer were trapped in their over turned car and burned beyond recognition. Seriously injured were Hans Hensler, 17 and Don McNeil, 20 both in the Wilson car; Sam Burks, 26, driver; his wife, Velma 20 and son Eric, 3. The Burks family lives on Rockville RR 4 and were going home from the drive-in theater. Mrs. Burks' sister, Nancy, had accompanied them. All the boys in the Wilson car were from Rockville. It is reported freely in Rockville that the Wilson car and another vehicle were racing eastward on the highway, the Wilson car being in the westbound traffic lane when it struck the Burks' car. This report has not, however, been confirmed by investigating authorities. There were two witnesses not involved in the accident, William Mash of Greencastle, formerly of Rockville and William Michaels of Rockville RR 3 were driving east of the scene of the accident, coming toward Rockville. Sarah Melinda Beaty ANNAKIN   - Mrs. Linnie Annakin, 65 years old, died at 11 o'clock Sunday morning at the home, 301 Kent Avenue (Terre Haute).  She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Paul Payton of Muncie, Mrs. Chester Smith, with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Peter Burt of Cleveland, Ohio; a son, Professor V. Dewey Annakin of the Indiana State Teachers College; two sisters, Mrs. John White and Mrs. Fred Mankin of Rockville; two brothers, Charles Beaty of Clinton and D. Beaty of Rockville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  She was a member of West Terre Haute Chapter No.

428, O.E.S.  The body was taken to the H. P. Martin funeral home and returned to the residence Monday morning.  Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home with Rev. George Dodds ANNAKIN - Miner Is Killed By Fall of Slate -  George Annakin, 61 years old, of West Terre Haute (formerly of Nyesville), was killed instantly in a fall of slate Tuesday afternoon at the Grasselli mine north of Terre Haute.  Hugh Waugh, who was working with him in a loading car, was slightly injured on the foot, but otherwise sustained no injuries.  Besides his widow, Mr. Annakin is survived by one son, Dewey, of Terre Haute, and three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Payton of Marshall, Ill., Miss Esther Annakin of South Fourth Street, and Mrs. Chester Smith of Terre Haute, and also three grand-daughters.    The funeral will be held from the residence at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon and will be conducted under the auspices of the Masons.  - Terre Haute Tribune, Wednesday, 10 February 1926, Page. 1 - submitted by Michael Mahoney

Mary C. ARNOLD of Rockville, age 71 died at 2:45 Sunday afternoon at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.  She was born December 9, 1893, to Isaac M. and Margaret Miller Overpeck and was a lifelong resident of Parke County.  Mrs. Arnold was a member of the Rockville Christian Church was active in the Merry Service Sun. School of that church and was the pianist and church organist for 20 years.  She was a member of the Rockville Home Demonstration Club and the Rain or Shine Club.  Surviving are the husband, Rex; two nephews and a niece.  She was a sister of the late HM Overpeck of Rockville.  Services were held Tues. afternoon at the Butler Funeral Home.  The Rev. Rex ARNOLD, 94, of Rockville, died at 1);20 p.m. Tuesday in Macanell Nursing Home, Center Point. He was retired from Ferguson Lumber Co. at Rockville and a member of Rockville Christian Church. Mr. Arnold was born Jan 27, 1892 in Putnam County to Charles W. and Mary Z. Watts Arnold. He first married Mary Overpeck who preceded him in death in 1965. He married Carrie HARMON in 1969 and she preceded him in death 1980. Survivors include two stepdaughters, Mildred Joslin of Rockville, and Dorothy Grubb of West Lafayette; a niece; a nephew and five step grandchildren. Mrs. Clara ASBURY, age 78, died early Sunday morning at Clinton Hospital, following a stroke suffered 3 weeks ago. She was the daughter of Harvey and Samantha Teague Rush, and had lived her life in this community.  She was a member of the Baptist Church and active in all activities as long as health permitted.  She is survived by the husband, Charles; a son, Leland of Marshall; a daughter, Doris Peacock of Rockville; a grandson, Harold of Marshall; and two great grandsons. Funeral services were held at the Davies Funeral Home, Tuesday with Rev. Elmer Evans, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating with Rev. Milo Hinckle assisting. Margaret R. "Mickey" Ashley, 63, of Seelyville and formerly of Montezuma, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002, in her residence. She was born January 26, 1939, in Montezuma to Paul Gill and Katherine Gamble Gill. Her husband, Billy Cliff Ashley, whom she married June 30, 1968, in Mooresville, died October 29, 1996. Survivors include two sons, Wyatte "Tony" Gill and his wife Jill of Terre Haute, and Scott Ashley and his wife Vickie of Attica; two stepgrandchildren; one brother, Bob Gill of Montezuma; two sisters, Opal McCarty of Edinburgh and Alice Miller of Lyford; several nieces and nephews; and special sister-in-law, Judy Russell of Lawrence. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Don Hutson. She was a member of Wayne Newton American Legion Post 346 and enjoyed crocheting and dancing. Private graveside services were May 11, 2002, in Thomas Cemetery in Newport, with the Rev. Andy Spencer officiating. Burial was in Thomas Cemetery. Henry B. Askins, 61, resident of Rockville, died at 6 a.m. yesterday (July 14, 1969) at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.  Born at Narrows, Ky., Feb. 25, 1908, he was the son of Lonzo and Celia Condor Askins.  Mr. Askins was a pipefitter and a member of Local 157, pipefitters and steamfitters union. He was a member of the Laurel Presbyterian Church in Rockville; Parke Lodge F&AM; the Low 12 Club and a member of the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis.   Survivors include the widow, Naomi; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Ropes of Spencer; a son, Sam of Gerthonen, Germany; three brothers, Estill of Narrows, Collis of Highland and John, address unknown; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Lain of Fordsville, Ky.; four grandchildren.  Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Butler Funeral Home in Rockville, with the Rev. Milton L. Nolin officiating. Burial will be in Memory Garden Cemetery. Parke Lodge will conduct graveside Masonic rites. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today.

Rockville -- Mrs. Betty Caroline Atchley, 37, died Monday night at her home in Ontario, California.  Mrs. Atchley was a former Parke County resident.  She was a daughter of Linsey and Helen Britton. Surviving include her husband, Leonard, her mother, Mrs. Helen Britton of Rockville; a daughter, Kelly Atchley at home; 5 brothers, Howard, Leighton and Gene Britton, of Rockville; Linsey Britton Jr. of Logansport and Donald Britton of Wallace and a sister, Mrs. Helen Hartman of Rockville. Mrs. Myrtle May ATKINSON, 83, a life resident of the Kingman community died Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Veda Strawser in Covington with whom she had resided during an illness of a year. Born near Kingman, Feb 1, 1877 she was the daughter of Hiram and Elizabeth Sowers Bales. In 1899, she was married to William Thomas Atkinson who died in 1940. Survivors include two sons, Fred of Marshall and Marvin of Kingman, 3 daughters, Mrs. Trena Kelley of Indianapolis, Mrs. Iva Reiff of Covington and Mrs. Strawser. There are 17 grandchildren. Fred ATKINSON, 75, of Marshall, died in the Vermillion Co. Hospital at Clinton.  He was a retired section foreman for the B&O Railroad.  He was born May 6, 1906, in Fountain Co, a son of William and Myrtle Bales Atkinson.  He was married to Omega Hutts on Feb 1, 1926. She died March 8, 1976.  He is survived by three sons, Vernon of Chiefland, Florida; Robert of Bridgeton and Michael of Rockville; four daughters: Mrs. Treva Smith of Rockville; Mrs. Virginia Welch of St. Petersburg Florida; Mrs. Sandra Reedy of Rockville; and Mrs. Sharon Davis of Indianapolis; a brother, Marvin of Covington; a sister, Mrs. Trena Kelly of Indianapolis; 24 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Mrs. Omega ATKINSON, 68, of Marshall, died early today (March 8, 1976) at Vermillion Co. Hospital in Clinton.  Born January 30, 1908 in Tangier, she was the daughter of Alonzo and Alemda Lawson Hutts.  She was married February 1, 1926 at Rockville to Fred Atkinson who survives.  Other survivors include three sons: Vernon of Chief Land Florida; Robert of Bridgeton and Michael of Indianapolis; four daughters: Mrs. Treva Smith and Mrs. Sandra Reedy, both of Rockville; Mrs. Virginia  Welch of St. Petersburg, FL; and Mrs. Sharon Davis of Indianapolis; two brothers, Fred and Hansel both of Tangier; five sisters, Mrs. Vera Lamb and Mrs. Ura Kiger, both of Tangier; Mrs. Carrie Davis of Indianapolis; Mrs. Ruby Dodson of Hillsboro and Mrs. Ruth Catterson of Bloomingdale; 29 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a brother.  Mrs. Atkinson was a member of the Home Economics Club and Neighbor's Club, both of Marshall.  Arrangements are incomplete at Rice Funeral Home in Marshall.   Unknown newspaper -  Submitted by Betty Dotson

“Charley ATKINSON (son of Robert A. Atkinson and Rebecca Crow-Atkinson) died, Sunday morning. He was an active member of the U.B. Church, and was well known among the people with whom he had done business on the road for 35 years. Early last winter he suffered an attack of something in the nature of paralysis, from which he never recovered. There was good, old-fashioned, congregational singing at the funeral of Charley Atkinson at Otterbein, last Monday. Some of the old-time songs were sung. Rev. She is survived by three other daughters, Mrs. Effie Kent of Terre Haute; Mrs. Belle Kent and Mrs. Mertle Firestone of Parke county; one son, Oscar Atkinson of Logansport; one sister, Mrs. Jane Wimmer of Kansas; a half-brother, George Jessup of Rockville, 19 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.  “Mrs. Huldah ATKINSON died about 6 o’clock, Saturday morning from an attack of the flu. Funeral services were held at the residence, Sunday afternoon in charge  of Rev. D. E. Noland. Burial at Poplar Grove Cemetery. Engineers of the State Conservation Department with Richard Leiber were at turkey Run last week making maps and staking off the ground for the new hotel, which will soon be erected. AULT

C. H. Ault, of Rockville, and CB Surface of Crawfordsville were both instantly killed on Thursday afternoon of last week at the Mathas crossing of the CI&W east of Montezuma, when their car was struck by the west bound passenger. Both were employees of Schlosser Bros, Mr. Surface being the field manager for this territory and being well and favorably known.  His parents live at New Market.  He was 31 years old and leaves a wife and two little sons, Clayton and Lawrence.  The crossing, which is a bad one, was protected by an automatic bell, but parties living near said it was not working satisfactorily. - Waveland Independent, May 9, 1919
