 John Oliver Truman was born in Parke County, IN.  Private with Co. A, 85th Indiana Infantry;

the unit was originally known as "Capt. Floyd's Co."  Enrolled at age 25 on

Aug. 18, 1862, in Annapolis, Parke Co., IN (which would have him born about

1837).  Mustered in Sept. 2, 1862, in Terre Haute.  He was 5 feet 7 inches

tall, with blue eyes, light hair and a dark complexion.  He gave his

occupation as farmer. He served in the A Co,85th inf Reg, IN. Mustered out in

 Washington DC on 12 June 1865.

He was taken prisoner of war March 5, 1863, at Thompson's Station, Tenn., and

was confined at Richmond, Va., on March 22, 1863.  On March 31, 1863, he was

paroled from City Point, Va., and moved to Camp Parole, Md., on April 1,

1863.   He then was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, April 6, 1863, and arrived

April 13.  While at Camp Chase, he was assigned to Co. D, 4th Regiment

Paroled Infantry.   On April 21, 1863, he reported to Camp Morton, IN, and

apparently regrouped with the 85th Infantry.

 

From March-December 1864, he was hospitalized.  From March-April 25 he was

hospitalized in Division No. 1 U.S.A. Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tenn.; he

returned to duty April 25.  Beginning May 3 he was hospitalized in No. 3

U.S.A. General Hospital in Lookout Mountain, Tenn.  In January 1865, he was

hospitalized in Louisville, Ky.  In March-April '65, he was sick in Foster

U.S.A. General Hospital, New Berne, N.C.

 

Mustered out June 12, 1865, near Washington, D.C.

Died of effects of impure vaccination at Lookout Mt. Tenn. 1865.
