General Information
Source: People's Guide: a business, political and religious directory of Montgomery County, Indiana. Indianapolis: Cline & McHaffie, 1874.
Union Twp. is located exactly in the center of Montgomery County; it is large, and contains more than 100 square miles. Union Twp. either corners with or borders on every other township in the County. The surface is from level to a hilly. The soil is generally good. The Twp. is watered by Big Sugar Creek and its numerous branches. The public improvements are generally good. Crawfordsville is the principal (sic) town in the township, and as it is the County seat, is noticed in the historical sketch of the County given in this book. The other towns are small and only of local importance; Whitesville, on the LN A & C RR is a very pleasant little village. The people of Union Twp. are generally in good circumstances, moral and affable. The city of Crawfordsville contains a population of over 4,000 inhabitants and is incorporated. There are two school houses belonging to the city, valued at $75,000. The vote of the township is about 2,200, the Republicans having a majority.
