First And Last
In that first class were George J. Brown, Clyde Rogers, Fred F. Hudson and Mary Selby.
Brown was born in Kentucky in 1889 and came to Indiana with his parents when he was 5. He attended the elementary school at Elmdale and was graduated from Alamo HS in 1910. Brown attended Marion Normal College and Indiana State Normal, now Indiana State University, graduating with three years of normal courses in 1914. He received his AB in 1916 and BS in 1923. He specialize din Industrial Arts and Sciences and taught in Indiana public schools for 27 years until 1948. He also did special teaching at Arsenal Tech HS during WWII, 1940 through 1946. He served in the Army during that war as a company clerk. Brown was married to Ester Hook in 1917. They are parents of 11 children. He retired to a farm in Vigo County and spends the winters in Florida.
Fred Hudson was married to Vonia Ellis in 1917. He began teaching in Montgomery County schools in 1917 and taught until 1950. Then he moved to Florida. They have a son, Gerrold of Lafayette and a daughter, Kathleen DeBruicker of Sarasota, Florida.
Clyde Rogers was married to Sallie Lee Sparks of St. Louis in 1924. They had three children, Sallie Lee, Robert and Charles. Sallie was graduated from Washington University at St. Louis, Robert from Wabash in 1951 and Charles from Purdue in 1953. Rogers served as Treasurer of Montgomery County from 192? To 1929. He was manager of American Security firm in Crawfordsville from 1930-1964 when he retired.
Mary Selby took her teacher training course at Danville (Ind) Normal. She taught one year in Hibernia and at Alamo schools. She married the late Fred Selby in 1912. They were parents of a son, Homer, who died at the age of 6. She worked in stores in Alamo from 1941-1958. She is living at the home in Alamo where she has resided since 1923.
