Monroe County was organized on January 14, 1818 from Orange County and Bloomington was appointed as the county seat. 

The territory now comprising Monroe county was formerly the rightful property of the Miami Indians.  Not all of the land was obtained from the Miami tribe at one time - the old Indian boundary runs across the county from near Gosport  in a southeasterly direction through Section 26 in Benton township.  This line divides two important Indian cessions.

The territory south of the line was part of Harrison's Purchase - from the treaty of Fort Wayne, September 30, 1809, and all of Monroe county above that treaty line was part of the New Purchase, obtained from the Indians by the treaty at St. Mary's, Ohio, October 2 to 6. 1818.  Since Monroe county was organized before the 2nd treaty, all of the county north of the Indian boundary was added after the 2nd treaty. The first survey of the land in this county, south of the Indian boundary, was executed in the fall of 1812 and the portion to the north of the boundary wasn't surveyed until 1819.

Marriage and Civil Court records exist from the formation of the county.  Birth, Marriage and Death record keeping began in 1882, Probate records exist from 1831 and Divorce records exist from early times - scattered in the Common Pleas Books, Civil Books and Miscellaneous Record Books.
