William M. Alexander Civil War Pension File - this is a large .pdf file shared by Connie Shots and is a great example of the data available from National Archives - she says: Captain Williamson Martin Alexander, known around Bloomington as “Mart. Alexander”, born 1836 in Monroe County . He was the son of John H. and Margaret Jane Clark Alexander. After the Civil War, he served in Bloomington politics as Sheriff. I know he also ran for Auditor, but I am not sure if he was successful in that bid. He left in his will a request and funds for the memorial that stands on the southeast corner of the courthouse square – a memorial to all the soldiers from Bloomington who have served in various wars. He was the brother of my great-great William James Alexander.
