Voorhees - Daniel Woolsey
Daniel Wolsey (Woolsey) Voorhees was one amazing fellow. Born in Butler County, Ohio Sept 26, 1827 he came to Indiana as a young child (two months) with his parents (Stephen and Rachel Elliott), where he attended school in Veedersburg and graduated from Asbury (DePauw) University at Greencastle in 1849.
Afterward he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1851 where he first practiced under Henry S. Lane, but when a practice became open he went to Covington; however, sometime before running for Congress in 1855 (he didn't make it) he moved to Terre Haute; however he may have gotten a better deal when he became DA 1858-1861 for Indiana.
He was elected as a Democrat to the 37th and 38th Congress (1861-1865) through the Civil War years. Later he served in the 41st and 2nd Congress (69-73).
When Oliver P. Morton died, he was elected to the US Senate to fill that vacancy and was reelected in 1885 and again in 1891.
One of the important items he accomplished was to serve on the Committee of the Library and Committee on Finance - he passed away April 10, 1897.
Much much more about Dan is in the biography section but he certainly belongs here too :)
