TEACHER-Preacher

Karen’s Genealogy Blog #45 – Taken from my December 1991 “Family Roots” (my column) in Montgomery Magazine.

Besides the last six letters of the words being the same, a TEACHER and a PREACHER are similar. I’m both. I guess, because I try to teach genealogy to anyone showing interest in it and I preach to anyone listening (or reading, in your case) that it is a necessity to write down your remembrances for future generations. Just think about it – if you don’t who will?

It’s true, you can be a teacher and preacher, too. Your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews will all learn about the values your family members possessed – they can learn what their ancestors liked and disliked, how they looked, what they wore, who their friends were, where they went, their hobbies, what they ate, their heroes, their homes and much, much more.
It would be good to create chapters on different aspects of your life (parents, grands, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, too). With Christmas coming up (okay, it might take ya' a few months), this is a perfect time to begin – the first subject being the Holidays when you were young. Include the food, the place, the people, the times, the presents, the entertainment (songs? Games?). Describe what the table looked like, who was there, what they wore, any traditions, any particular years that stand out, or a particularly interesting present you could highlight.

So, take these thoughts and begin culminating them into paragraph form. There, I’ve taught you the preliminaries. NOW, remember my words – WRITE, WRITE, WRITE ! After all, if you don’t who will? So, you see, you CAN be a teacher and preacher too – try it, you’ll like it and your descendants will, too!
