Source: Crawfordsville Review 9 Oct 1923 p 2
Emily Nicklas, by Charles E. Massey files a suit for divorce from Henry Nicklas. Emily alleges that she was properly married to Henry on the 6th day of June 1918 and that for more than 5 years she performed the maritial duties of a loyal wife, with all her capacity for love and affection for Henry, who, seemingly could neither appreciate or reciprocate. And as statutory grounds alleges cruel and inhuman treatment and that Henry frequently beat her over the head and bruised her body and at least on one occasion punched her face and blacked her eye so that she was in no condition to go into society for several days. She further avers that she has neither property or money and that Henry is possessed of both; that a fair estimate is of the value of $2000 and that he is an able-bodied man with an earning capacity equal to $1,800 per years. Wherefore she hopes the court will grant a decree of separation and relieve her of all responsibility to Henry and allow her $1,000
