Neal - Raymond Ray "Gaumey"
famousfix.com introduced me to this interesting fellow born in our County.
Raymond “Ray” Robert “Gaumey” Neal was born Nov 1, 1897 in Mellott and died 80 years later the same month (25th) in Greencastle. Gaumey was the DePauw coach for 16 years and very well loved by his team members. When DePauw was building the $6.2 million PE and Recreation Center, Chet Elson, a member of the 1933 team that was “unbeaten, untied and unscored upon,” (Moynahan, Pat Evansville Courier Sun 16 Dec 1979 p 45) coached by Gaumey, Elson noted, “I’ve had a dream ever since that year that I could do something for him.” Raising over a million (close to two) from just the 1933 team, Elson noted that it really wasn’t hard, because “There’s a million worth of love for Gaumey.” Coach taught these men to be successful in life, not just on the field, and he did anything who could to help them, often giving good references for jobs that would shoe ‘em in. On his WWI draft card, Gaumey was noted as medium build, 5’10” with brown eyes and hair. He married Genevieve Cottrell and they were parents of Mary Carolyn (loved that lady) and Robert Cottrell Neal. Gaumey also served as DePauw’s athletic director for some years.
