The following is a part of a letter received by Earl R. Meek from James Harvey Robinson with the American Expeditionary Forces, France Sunday, Sept 29, 1919 - Dear "Meeks:" After one of the most foggy mornings a person ever laid eyes on it has cleared away and the clouds are breaking up and Old Sol is putting his ever welcome face in view now and then and I have finished my morning's sleep I will undertake to answer your most welcome letters of August 6 and '19. Well Earl I know you want to know something about myself and that is going to be a pretty hard matter to describe. In the first place I was lucky in choosing this branch of service, for I don't know what would be a more interesting branch for me. In fact, I would not be in any other branch of the service. And I have heard seen some very funny experiences and experienced some too but that is what makes army life and I am taking the funny side of it and wading through. Well, Earl you imagine what happened the first time I heard one of those big guns cut loose. O! Well for about 30 minutes I thought of several things and nothing either for ... listen for an .. well I will chop that subject off before the censor gets all of this letter. I was paid last week for the first time since April and I was sure glad to get the money. The four months' pay came to 229 Francs, now, you can figure that up for yourself. I have been figuring ever since I got it and don't know whether I got it exact or not. It comes in handy just the same. Well Earl I must go to supper, will bring this letter to a close, write when you can. Your Friend, Pvt. James H. Robinson Co C 101 Field Signal Battalion, American Expeditionary Force, France
