Zeek, Joseph, Was a 'teamster' in Civil War(1861-1866). b. 4-2-45 in Anderson IN. disch
from war 2-3-66 at Brownsville TX. Tried several times to get a veterans pension
but unsuccessful. His wife got a widow's pension after he died. Married to Elizabeth
Highfield on 8-19-66. They had 15 children, 6 sons and 9 daughters; Rachel, Nancy,
Ollie, Harrison, Jannie, Ella, Mary Ella, Louise Conda, Joseph, Cora, William,
Grace M., Johnie, Georgia, and James Frank. After war he continued working with
horses and mules. He helped build streets and country roads using his horses and
wagons to haul gravel and drag and grade the roads. Joseph Zeek died June 1913.

drafted but faithful to the principles of Society of Friends and true
to the doctrines of his forefathers, he paid $300 rather than enter
the army."
John Winslow (bro of Nixon) hired Silas Cook as substitute for himself
when drafted.
